Mumble (“mumble”, “mumble”)

It's also a voice chat, an analogue of Raidcall, TeamSpeak and Skype, with low audio latency and low traffic consumption, designed for communication between a large number of users in one channel. Includes a special technology that allows you to make the sound of the voices of other players on the server dependent on their specific position in the game. The program supports sound positioning, that is, depending on where the player is standing, on the right or left, the sound will also come from the right or left. Mumble can be activated by voice, has high quality communications comparable to TeamSpeak and Ventrilo, effective echo cancellation, easy control sound level. The program has a built-in, customizable overlay that allows you to see directly in the game who the sound is coming from.

Installation does not cause any difficulties, “next-next-done”.
When you launch it for the first time, the setup wizard will launch. There we set the microphone sensitivity, the voice response threshold, and the type of activation - always active, voice activation, button activation. The latter is most convenient - it does not transmit noise if you have speakers and not headphones, it does not transmit extraneous sounds on the air and consumes less traffic. I personally put it on the "C" button.
Next, when the setup wizard is completed.

The program prompts you to select the server you want to join. Click the "new" button:

We don't touch the rest. "OK". "Join." Then just double-click on the desired channel, and that’s it, you’re on the air!

Most convenient and in a modern way communication on the Internet is IP telephony, but this method requires some resources on your computer, especially when it comes to collective voice chat with the game turned on. To the delight of online game lovers, there are optimized voice clients. Actually, this is what we will talk about. We present to your attention alternative clients for voice communication - Raidcall and TeamSpeak.

Raidcall

Raidcall is a program for voice communication in online games. Of course, it can also be used for regular voice communication, but it is tailored specifically for MMORPG, MMOFPS, etc.
Raidcall differs from other software of a similar class primarily in its rather broad functionality. Consider for yourself: the protocol used (does not require a wide channel from the client), an overlay function (the most common collective games are supported), its own social network, completely free (the ability to create up to 5 voice servers for free). But let's talk about everything in order.

At Raidcall, everything is built around groups, or channels. A beginner Raidcall user can create one group, a more or less advanced user can create 2, 3 or more. The total number depends on a special parameter called “Raidcall level”.

Everything is standard here - name, type. Only the “Game” parameter is interesting. It’s not that Raidcall couldn’t work without specifying a game, it’s just that if the game is specified correctly, the program will be able to pull player nicknames from it, which is very convenient - much more convenient than if nicknames from Raidcall are used.

After creation, the group receives a personal ID. With its help, the group can be found and added to it. Well, since it is at least impractical to sit on a channel alone, this same group ID must be given to those with whom you want to communicate. The channel can be made private, or it can be public: in the first case, the program will require a password to enter, in the second case, everyone can enter.

After entering the channel, you can talk with friends and write text messages to them. You can also see the “contribution” of each user, edit your nickname, record everything that happens on the channel in a sound file, and much more.

In addition to group communication, individual communication is also available in Raidcall - for this you should go to the “Contacts” tab. There you can add contacts to the blacklist. True, in order to communicate with anyone, you will first have to find him.

There is nothing unusual in the settings, with the exception of a curious feature called “Overlay”. Its essence is that on the screen running game a special panel is displayed that allows you to see who is currently online and who is speaking. Unfortunately, few games yet support this feature, but on the forums you can find ways to “add” it for popular games like WoT.

Raidcall also has a service that can be described as a “social network”. It is made quite conveniently, but the usefulness of this function is in great doubt.
What can you say about the quality and speed of communication? Compared to Skype, the connection is very stable, the delay is slightly lower - the difference in the protocols used is obvious.

Verdict: useful program, which is well suited for team voice communication in various types of cooperative games. Plus to this - an overlay, free, no lags and a strange extension in the form social network. The low delay during communication is also encouraging: the new protocol works effectively.

Teamspeak

First Teamspeak version was quite a serious breakthrough. The second one was also actively used by users from all over the world, but the cost of renting servers played a role - some users gradually migrated towards free competitors. After this, the popularity of the program began to gradually decline until the third version was released, the last one to date. Good quality sound, new features and effects, and, let’s be honest, the user-friendliness of the interface again brought Teamspeak to the peak of popularity.

To successfully communicate using Teamspeak, you need to connect to a server. Servers are public and private. To connect to the second, as you can understand, you need to enter a password. When connected, you will be able to communicate with those who are also on this server. To do this, on the server itself you need to connect to an existing channel or create your own. People on the same channel can communicate freely.

If the server you need is not in the list, you can connect to it manually.

All information about the current server is available on the main screen. There is not only a voice communication function, but also text communication.

Everything in the settings is quite standard. Just as in the case of Raidcall, only the overlay function deserves attention, only in Teamspeak it is implemented much more conveniently. True, you need to enable this function in the setup wizard, which is called when you first launch the program. To call again you need to go to Settings->Setup Wizard.

Verdict: advanced program for voice communication. In some ways, Raidcall is more convenient (for example, with the same overlay), but by and large it is not much different. The most significant difference is that in Teamspeak you can create an unlimited number of channels on different servers. But there is also a minus here - on public free servers the delay can be significant, which can be a big hindrance when it comes to e-sports. And you will have to pay for a separate server. Therefore, if you have the funds to rent your own server, it is better to use Teamspeak. And if not, Raidcall or, at worst, Skype can help you.

Many players who have been playing World of Warcraft for some time and plan to take an active part in raids, rating battles, and arena battles will be faced with the need to install voice communication program, in order to better coordinate the actions of the team or listen to the instructions of the RL.

If you yourself plan to lead raids or manage actions in the rBG or arena, then it’s up to you to decide which voice communication program to choose. If you join a specific group, then you will need to come to terms with the fact that this group already uses a specific program and you will be required to have it, as well as the ability to use it.

In one case or another, this article will help you understand popular programs, download them, understand their differences and learn how to use them. Also, in my opinion, any serious player should have all types of connections! If you go on raids with PUGs, be prepared that they may have a different program and it will not be polite to make you wait 2 hours while you figure out where to download the new one and how to configure it. So let's get started:

Ventrilo

Download Ventrilo(in common parlance, a bucket), you can use the program client absolutely free from the official website, but if you want to run your own server, you will be limited to 8 simultaneously connected people. Therefore, most players who liked this method communication, are forced to purchase their own virtual server. But more on that a little later. Here we will look at how to download the client, as well as how to set up ventrilo.

If you do not speak basic English, these screenshots will help you.

Having visited the Ventrilo website, in the left menu you need to find the “Download” link and click on it. We will go to the downloads section, where we can select the appropriate client.

Since the majority uses purchased servers, we will not stop and also pay attention to server files, and we don’t need them, since the limit of 8 people is not very good. Perhaps they can be raised for the Arena team, but here you need a little more technical knowledge: to understand what a direct or white IP, router, routing, etc. is, then you’d better not think about it.

In the Client programs section, we select the version that suits us. If you don’t know what bit depth your system is: 32bit or 64bit, go to the computer properties and look there. Although, you can download the 32-bit version - it will work well in Windows 7. If you are MAC users, there is a client for you too. No for Linux, but he writes that in development, although we don’t need it, WoW is not for Linux, and we are not considering perversions like running it under Wine.

Installing the Ventrilo client is not difficult, click next and the client is installed. After this we launch, we will be asked whether we want to read online instructions– clicks “no” and we get to the main program window.

Ventrilo setup

WITH ventrilo settings you shouldn't have any difficulties. First of all, we need to create a username under which other users will see us. It is worth noting that the list of servers is tied to a specific name, so if you decide to change the name, you will need to add the servers again.

Click on the arrow “->” opposite “User Name” and in the “Setup User” window click the “New” button, enter your preferred Name (can also be in Cyrillic) and click ok.

Once we have created a name, the list of servers becomes available for creation. Click “->” next to “Server” and click, as in the case of the user, “new”. The server name is entered only in Latin. After this, other input fields become available.

In the “Hostname or IP” field we need to enter the IP address (example: 127.0.0.1)

In the “Port number” field – the port number that the server uses.

Each north can have its own port number. If the leader of the group sends you a line like ru2.ventriloservers.biz 3784, this means that we need to insert ru2.ventriloservers.biz into the “Hostname or IP” section, and 3784 into the port section.

If ventrilo server is protected by a password, you will also be informed of it and will need to fill it in the “Password” field.

After clicking the “OK” button, the server will be saved and will be available in the drop-down list in the main window. There can be as many created servers as you want and plan to use.

In order to connect to the server, click the “Connect” button and if all the data is correct, we can say hello to other players who are present there.

If they didn’t hear us, then most likely it’s activated by button, and in order to change this or see which button the microphone is activated on, we need to go to “Setup”, which is located in the main window.

Make sure that the necessary checkboxes are checked and assign a button that is convenient for you to activate.

There is another very convenient thing: you can often encounter such an unpleasant thing that some people can be heard louder and others much quieter (the microphone is poorly configured, etc.), but it doesn’t matter, in a couple of clicks you can set the volume level for each participant in the voice chat.

To do this, we need to select the desired participant, right-click on it, select “Miscellaneous” -> “Special effects...”

In the window that appears, on the right side, we select the “Volume” parameter and press the “<- Add”. Появится окно с ползунком, который нужно перетянуть в лево и в право (тише/громче), что бы добиться нужного вам эффекта.

Unfortunately, there are no controls in the game itself other than global hotkeys.

Ventrilo servers

Concerning Ventrilo servers, as I already mentioned, you basically need to buy them. The Ventrilo company itself sells licenses for 1000+ users and only to legal entities, therefore, this will not suit most players. But if you decide what you want buy Ventrilo for a guild/static, you will need to contact those who have already purchased most of the licenses and resell them on their sites.

Ventrilo paid servers

is one such company that offers to purchase Ventrilo servers for the required number of people, and most importantly, in the desired region, which helps reduce data transmission delays and maximize signal quality.

Prices are quite reasonable and range from $4.95/month. for 10 people and above.

Free ventrilo servers

Some large gaming portals, especially cyber-sports, offer their visitors to take advantage of free ventrilo servers. This is very convenient if you need to quickly play several games, but do not have your own server.

But nuances arise when you use free ventrilo servers for longer purposes - such as raids.

What is the nuance:

On such free servers, there are funny animals (I can’t call them anything else), which jump on the channels (and the channels are open to everyone) and start: grunting, farting, vomiting, moaning, etc.
Such cretinism can actually undermine the raid, since many begin to argue and swear with them, which leads to final failure and the search for another place, which also takes time.

Therefore, if you plan to use ventrilo for constant raids, it’s better to buy yourself a server and don’t spoil your nerves =)

Opinion about Ventilo

For me personally, Ventrilo is the optimal client for raids. The communication quality is very high, delays are minimal. The client does not take up much space and is quite easy to install and configure. Most statics and guilds have their own servers, and if you want, you can find free servers.

Team Speak 3

TeamSpeak 3 is a new version of the popular voice program, which, however, has not yet left beta. But this does not prevent most players from using it as the main one in raids, rBGs and arenas. The previous version was very lame in terms of sound quality, so most players chose Ventrilo. With the release of the new version, the situation changed for the better and the quality of communication in Teamspeak began to compete with Ventoy.

Unfortunately, the Teamspeak website is also in English, so if you don't know basic English and can't find how download teamspeak – follow further instructions:

Once on the site, we need to go to the downloads section, which can be found in the upper right corner called “Downloads”. By pointing at this inscription, you need to select TeamSpeak 3.

In the downloads section, similar to Ventrila, we have a choice of which operating system we want download teamspeak. There are even clients for Linux, as well as a server part for any operating system. Those who understand the processes of installing and configuring servers do not need instructions for server installation - we are interested in the Teamspeak client. We select the one we need and download it by clicking on the “Download” button (after clicking, a window with an agreement should pop up, at the bottom of which we need to click “I Agree”).

Setting up TeamSpeak 3

After downloading and installing (installation boils down to simply pressing the “next” keys) of the client part, we find ourselves in a convenient setup wizard, after going through which we will prepare our client for use. Click “Next –>”

In the next window, enter your nickname, which will be seen by other users with whom you communicate.

Next, we need to choose how to activate the microphone. Initially, it is worth activating by voice, which will greatly disturb not only you, but also other players, since a mother or wife may accidentally come in and start lamenting that she didn’t do her homework/drank her salary, or music will play in the background that everyone will hear . Therefore, we choose the “Push-to-Talk” method (press to speak).

After highlighting this option, a “No Hotkey Assigned” button will appear next to it, which you need to click to set the key that will activate the microphone. A gray window will pop up - press a key, for example - Ctrl.

After all these actions, the master finishes his work.

So, we find ourselves in the program window. To connect to the server, select Connections – Connect. We get to a window where you need to enter the server address, connection port, nickname for this server and password. There is also an advanced menu where you can specify the default channel. After setting up the connection, you can start communicating. Another interesting thing is the second tab, where you can bookmark the server for future use. There is a convenient menu where you can manage existing bookmarks, add/delete or edit.

By default, we can use the public TeamSpeak 3 server, the data of which is immediately available immediately if you click on the “Connections -> Connect” menu. Our task is to simply click “Connect”.

We have also added this server to our bookmarks, so don’t worry if you enter other data but want to come back here. You can add any other servers that you like to Bookmarks.

There is one thing that really annoys me about TeamSpeak. These are notifications in an artificial voice about a connection, disconnection of a user, connection to a server, etc. It quite often interferes and irritates, so I immediately turn it off:

In the “Settings –> Options” (Alt+P) section, select the “Notifications” item and in the “Sound Pack” list, select “Sounds deactivated”. This will turn everything off necessary sounds. If you want to keep some, just go through the list and check off what you need.

TeamSpeak 3 Servers

The picture with the servers is almost exactly the same as in Ventrilo. You can download the server and install it on your computer and allow up to 32 people to join at the same time. To do this, you need technical knowledge, or a friend who can do it + good internet channel and computer.

You can use the public one, which is built into Teamspeak by default, but, as it is written there, it is supported by enthusiasts and was created solely for informational purposes. As for me, it glitches quite often: it freezes, kicks users, so if you need a server for a guild/static and less headaches, then it’s better buy teamspeak 3 server and does not suffer.

In our region, the official distributor of servers are websites and

Opinion about TeamSpeak 3

Everything is quite simple and convenient, the quality of communication is excellent high level. A client with a convenient settings wizard, after completing which, the client can be used immediately. On the off site there is a section with (skins, plugins, etc.).

RaidCall

RaidCall – A fairly new voice program, but actively gaining momentum among players. Lately, quite often when collecting pugs or statics, I see that RaidCall is needed. Unlike Ventrilo and TeamSpeak, the RaidCall website has a Russian-language interface, as well as a separate Russian section on their forum.

In order to use this program, we need to create an account on the raidcall website and receive an identifier (), with which you will log into the client.

You can register immediately on the website or after installing the program. Installation, as usual, is not complicated and after we receive an authorization form (most importantly, do not forget to indicate the Russian language when prompted). If you have not yet registered on the site, then click the “Create a new account” button.

We enter our registration data and literally immediately receive confirmation on email specified during registration.

The program is quite easy to use and does not have a huge number of settings, which is a definite plus. And its huge advantage is that it is in Russian and does not require a serious load on the brain =)

In the main window we can manage the list of existing servers, or create our own, where we can invite other registered participants.

If you want to throw off your anger and swear at someone, this server is for you =)

We select “Create a free Raidcall server” on the right.

As the program states, we can create 3 free servers, apparently further only for money. With the creation, I think there will be no problems. We need to choose a name that is available, choose the game we are playing and the location closest to you. I chose Europe, the total ping was 47ms. Not bad at all. All that remains is to indicate the availability of the server (using a password, of course) and create it.

Having connected to the server, we see that 50 slots are available to us, that is, 50 participants can be on this server. If we want to increase this number, we can click on the + button and get to the page for inviting other players (viral marketing). For each person attracted, we receive incentive slots.

Participants can connect to your channel through “Search for Raidcall servers”. To do this, you need to enter the name of the server in the search form, and of course know the password that you set.

You can add friends in the system by searching your raidcall account. Incoming invitations will look like this:

You can chat with friends, but I haven’t figured out how to invite them to the server yet.

I really liked that the game has an overlay window built into it, which can be disabled using the Shift + Tab key combination. When someone speaks, that player's nickname is displayed, as well as the name of the character in the game (if the “Display character name” option is checked in the settings). If you go to another character, the name will change. In this window you can also change the server and chat with friends.

An interesting feature was the ability to create a screenshot, or rather, a separate part of the game space. Now you don’t need to go into Photoshop and cut out unnecessary areas. You just need to select a part of the screen and click “OK”. The only thing is that this panel, I hope, is in English for now.

There are not many settings in Raidcall and this is impressive. You can enter the settings by clicking on the button with a screwdriver and a key. The only thing that interested me was the voice activation key, which was found in “Voice Settings” and was “Ctrl” by default, which completely suited me.

By entering the settings, you can change the activation method on the “voice settings” tab.

Opinion about Raidcall

This is the only program in the review that has been translated into Russian. This is a big and undeniable plus, but of course, this is only for the first setup and development.

The connection quality is not bad, but I have not yet tested it under heavy loads: more than 10 people.

Another plus is that servers are created within the system and there is no need to install, search, buy, or create other servers.

General conclusions

As I noted earlier, all clients need to be installed. Everything will depend on which group you fall into. At the moment, these voice communication programs are the most popular and are used by the majority of players. I didn’t consider Skype because it puts a heavy load on the network and is only suitable for arena workers with a good channel.

I hope that what was written above helped you understand what voice communication programs are available and how to set up and use them.

This material turned out to be very voluminous and quite difficult to write, so if I overlooked any nuances or perhaps you would be interested in learning how to configure this or that thing in one of the clients - write in the comments, and we will supplement this article.
