Connecting metal-plastic pipes using crimp fittings

  3. Then you need to remove the external chamfer using a chamfer remover;
  4. The internal diameter of the pipe is also checked using a calibrator;
  5. The sleeve is removed from the fitting and the integrity of its rings and gaskets is checked. If everything is in order, then the sleeve can be returned to its place;
  6. The fitting shank is inserted into the pipe with a certain force;
  7. Then the sleeve is inserted into the press fitting until it stops, and the handles are connected.

Features of connection using a compression fitting

The design of a compression fitting is somewhat different from that of a press fitting. So, a compression fitting consists of:

  • Brass fitting;
  • Insulating Teflon ring;
  • Nickel plated tightening nut;
  • Crimping ring with a special cut;
  • Rubber sealing ring;
  • Metal-plastic pipe;
  • And also from the shank.

The connection in this case occurs in the following steps:

Scissors for cutting metal-plastic are hand tool, which is recommended to work with if the diameter of the cut products does not exceed 40 mm.

  1. First, cut the desired section of the pipe using special scissors;
  2. Using a chamfer remover and calibrator, chamfers are removed from the inner and outer surfaces of the pipe;
  3. A tightening nut is put on one end of the pipe, then a crimp ring is put on;
  4. The end of the fitting is inserted into the pipe. The end of the fitting is also inserted into the pipe;
  5. Then the ferrule ring must be moved towards the fitting, after which the tightening nut must be moved towards it so that it covers the ferrule ring;
  6. To seal and seal the thread, you can use FUM tape or sealant paste;
  7. Finally, using two wrenches, the tightening nut is tightened until it stops. In this case, two wrenches are needed so that you can hold the pipe stationary with one and tighten the nut with the other. In this case, excessive force should not be used, as there is a risk of damaging not only threaded connection, but also the pipe itself.

Compression fittings are perfect solution for metal-plastic pipes. Such fittings are made from brass, copper, steel or plastic. They allow you to quickly and without special equipment install pipe structures.

How to connect metal-plastic pipes with pipes made of another material

Quite often during repair work there is a need to connect pipes made of metal-plastic with pipes made of other materials. At the same time, you can use the most different methods. The choice remains at the discretion of the consumer and based on what kind of material has to be dealt with in a particular case.
For example, to connect a metal-plastic pipe to a metal pipe, you need to use compression fittings. It is important to follow the sequence of actions and be extremely careful. To make a connection you need to do the following:

The connection of metal-plastic pipes with metal ones occurs using special devices - fittings. They have different configurations and provide fastening both in a linear plane and at an angle of 90 degrees.

  1. First of all, prepare a metal pipe. The essence of the preparation is that the pipe is stripped down to bare metal. It is necessary to remove rust, paint and any other contaminants from it;
  2. Now you need to screw the fitting onto the thread. In this case, it is better to first wrap tow on the thread to improve waterproofing;
  3. A press washer with a nut is placed on the metal-plastic pipe, and calibration is performed, if necessary;

This type of connection is very strong, reliable and will not allow leaks. Here, however, the main thing is to choose the right diameter fitting.
If you need to connect a metal-plastic pipe with a polypropylene pipe, then you can use couplings that are designed for this purpose. At one end the coupling is soldered to a plastic pipe. At the other end of the coupling there is a special thread. A fitting with an external thread is soldered into a polypropylene pipe, into which you will need to screw a fitting for a metal-plastic pipe with an internal thread. They just need to be twisted together more tightly - and the connection can be considered perfect.
Fittings made in the form of corners, tees, etc. are available for free sale. They allow you to quickly and easily connect polypropylene pipes with metal-plastic ones. It is also recommended not to neglect FUM tape or ordinary tow to ensure maximum tightness of the joints.
If you have to deal with PVC pipes, then they are connected to metal-plastic in exactly the same way as in the case of polypropylene. Almost the same fittings are used for this. The set of tools required to make connections is also similar.

Fittings are used not only when laying water supply systems, but when repairing them. If a defect is found on any part of the water supply, it is simply removed by replacing it with new site, which is attached using the same fittings.

Technology for connecting metal-plastic segments

The connection of metal-plastic segments is carried out using two types of fittings:


  • compression;
  • press

High-temperature welding (soldering) and gluing are not performed; these methods are only applicable for composite products– polypropylene, polyethylene and PVC.

Choice specific type fittings depends on functional purpose pipeline. If you are installing a cold water supply system or a system with external placement, it makes sense to use compression fittings, since their installation does not require special tools - the fitting's crimp nut is tightened with ordinary open-end wrenches. A compression fitting provides a detachable connection that can be removed if necessary.

However, it is not recommended to use compression fittings when installing hot water supply and heating communications, since metal-plastic lines expand when heated, which can cause leaks at the fittings. Please note that compression connections cannot be used when laying the pipeline hidden (when installing the system behind decorative panels or when concreting it inside the walls), since they require periodic maintenance.


Press fittings are more reliable in this regard. They form a permanent connection that cannot be dismantled, but is resistant to leaks due to the linear expansion of pipes (water supply withstands pressure of 10 MPa). However, for the installation of press fittings it is necessary special tool– press pliers, which will cost you 1-3 thousand rubles. To connect metal-plastic pipelines, the following tools are required:

  • (pipe cutter);
  • sweep or sandpaper and a file - for removing burrs;

Let's consider connecting metal-polymer pipes using press fittings:

  1. The pipe is straightened, measured and marked at the cut point.

  4. The pipe is straightened by the calibrator and inserted into the fitting until it stops so that it is placed between the fitting.
  5. The coupling is pressed using press pliers so that 2 uniform rings are formed on it. Please note that after displacing the pliers re-crimping cannot be performed.

Instructions for connecting pipes using compression fittings:

  1. The cut is cut and cleared of burrs, and the end part of the pipe is straightened with a calibrator.
  2. A crimp nut is placed on the segment, after which a split ring is installed at a distance of 10 mm from the cut.
  3. The pipe is pushed all the way onto the fitting fitting and the crimp ring is first tightened by hand, and then pulled out using open-end wrenches - one key secures the fitting body, the second one rotates the nut.

The connection of metal-plastic pipes with metal ones is carried out using special press and compression fittings, which are equipped with a fitting with an internal thread for joining with a steel segment.

The installation instructions are as follows:

  1. Using a grinder, the old metal pipe is cut at the site of the intended connection.
  2. The pipe is cleaned of rust and coated with grease, after which a thread corresponding to the configuration of the fitting is formed on it using a thread cutter.
  3. The thread is cleaned of dust and the fitting is screwed onto the steel pipe. The gap on the inside of the fitting is covered.

How metal-plastic pipelines are connected

For water supply, metal-plastic pipes can be installed with your own hands compression or press fittings.

When compression fittings are installed, a nut is screwed onto the open ferrule ring. This creates pressure (using two wrenches), which creates a strong compression joint. Features of installation with press fittings

Connecting metal-plastic pipes with press fittings allows you to get permanent connections— they do not need to be regularly tightened, they will serve for about 50 years. In addition, at the joints a working pressure of up to 10 atm is allowed.

Important: Pipes installed using press fittings can even be filled with concrete.

The connection technology does not involve welding or soldering:

  1. First, you should cut the pipe, strictly maintaining an angle of 90 degrees.
  2. The edge of the pipe needs to be processed (chamfered). This ensures that the pipe is adjusted to the required diameter.
  3. A stainless steel sleeve should be placed on the edge of the pipe, and the shaped part of the fitting should be installed into the pipe until it stops.
  4. You need to apply a press clamp to the sleeve and connect the handles until they stop.

If during the installation process it becomes necessary to bend the pipe, then the use of corner fittings is not necessary. The material itself is very elastic, but it costs apply springs, preventing pipe pinching.

Do-it-yourself installation of metal-plastic pipes for water supply can be carried out using sliding fittings. To do this, the pipe is prepared for connection in the standard way, after which the coupling is put on. The pre-cleaned edge should be treated with an expander and flared. Then the pipe is put on the fitting, the sleeve is clamped in the press and moved. A push-on fitting works like this: when the coupling is pushed onto the fitting, the pipe is pressed and securely fixed. This type The connection is also permanent.

How to connect metal-plastic pipes with other materials

The connection of metal-plastic pipes with metal components is carried out in the case when a partial replacement of the water supply is carried out or a metal-plastic pipe is connected to an old metal riser. To carry out the connection work, a compression fitting and a calibrator are required.

Before connecting metal-plastic pipes with metal, you need to know that if products of different dimensions are joined, then the thread is selected in accordance with the size of the cast iron (steel) pipe, and the rest (cuff and washer) - according to the dimensions of the metal-plastic pipeline.

Tow is wound onto a metal pipe, after which the fitting is screwed on. The edge of the calibrated pipe is pushed onto the cone, which is already screwed to the metal. Then the nut is tightened with an open-end wrench, very carefully. The washer ensures reliable crimping of the metal-plastic pipe.


Considering the question of how to connect metal-plastic pipes with polypropylene, note that the connection with polypropylene is made by using special threaded fittings. Such a joint is sometimes needed at fastening points near geysers, washing machines.

General rules for laying a metal-plastic pipeline

Things to consider:

  • sensitivity of the material to thermal, mechanical loads, as well as ultraviolet radiation - in practice, this means that open wiring from such pipes can only be done in places where factors of such influence are excluded;
  • if the wiring is hidden, then there must be hatches and removable panels for easy access to the connecting fittings (if the fittings are screw type);
  • if metal-plastic pipes are being laid through building structures, then they are also provided with sleeves so that their internal diameter is larger size metal-plastic pipes by 5-10 mm - then a gap is formed that needs to be filled with soft material;
  • When laying, no cracks or scratches should appear on the surface of the pipes - this means that markings should only be done with a soft pencil or marker.

How to repair

Before you begin repairing a metal-plastic pipe, you need to determine the location of the leak, turn off the water supply and dry the pipe, as well as clean it of grease, dust and other contaminants.

Repairs can be performed using one of the following technologies:

  1. Bandage as a temporary repair method. You need to take a rubber pad, apply it to the leak area and secure it.
  2. Temporary methods also include flange, into which the rubber gasket is installed.
  3. Using sealant You can reliably cover up cracks and leaks, but this composition will also deteriorate over time.
  4. Epoxy glue- the leak area is coated with it, then a layer of bandage or cotton fabric is applied, after which another layer of glue is applied. The entire area must dry for 11 hours, and then the water supply can be restored.

Most often, repairs are made at the joints, that is, at the fittings. You can simply tighten the junction of the elements, but if the leak does not stop, then the joint will have to be dismantled. Here possible reasons the malfunctions are:

  • damage to the rubber sealing rings - such elements are not repaired, but replaced;
  • if the pipe has an uneven cut, then it needs to be leveled and recalibrated;
  • If the brass body of the fitting bursts, the fitting is completely replaced.

When installing new fittings, you can lubricate the joints with silicone - this provides additional waterproofing.

The pipe is installed (Fig. 10) using special compression-type brass fittings. These fittings consist of a fitting, a split ring and a union nut and provide reliable connection pipes and fittings using conventional wrench. When the union nut is tightened, the press sleeve (O-shaped cut ring) is compressed on the pipe and a tightness is ensured between the fitting and the inner wall of the pipe.

The main advantage of this connection is that no special equipment is required during installation, and if necessary, it is possible to dismantle any connection. Once assembled, the assembly can theoretically be disassembled and reassembled, but, as practice shows, it is better not to touch the connection. Therefore, in case of pipeline repair, you need to cut out the damaged part and insert a new one, connecting it with fittings. When connecting a pipe to a used fitting, the sealing gaskets on it must be replaced with new ones (Fig. 11).

The pipe is cut perpendicular to the axis with a special pipe cutter for composite pipes, or, in extreme cases, a hacksaw with a fine tooth. Bend the pipe by hand or using a special spring - a pipe bender. Two types of springs are used: some are inserted inside the pipe (practically not used), others are put on top of the pipe. The minimum bending radius of a pipe without a spring is 5 outer diameters of the pipe being bent, with a spring - 3.5 diameters.

In Russian construction market There are almost all types of compression fittings produced in the world. Fundamentally, their designs are not much different from each other, but there is still a difference: manufacturers produce detachable and one-piece fittings (Fig. 12), but this is not the main thing. When purchasing pipes and fittings for them, manufactured in different places, you should ensure their compatibility, since the outer diameters and wall thickness of pipes from different manufacturers, even for the same nominal pressure, may not match. In other words, it is better to buy fittings and pipes, if possible, from the same manufacturer.

When fastening metal-plastic pipes, a minimum of clamps and clamps are required, since the pipes retain their shape well. The pipeline is installed using both a manifold and a tee installation scheme. When installing tee circuits (in the language of plumbers, this circuit is called a “comb”), the fittings can be connected sequentially to the pipe or you can first mount the pipeline and then cut the fittings into it (Fig. 13).

The sequence of connecting metal-plastic pipes with compression fittings:

1. Align the pipe, ensuring a straight section of at least 10 cm before and after the cut.
2. Cut the pipe at a right angle according to the markings.
3. Process the end of the pipe with a reamer, first with the calibration side, removing the lead-in chamfer of no more than 1 mm, then with the other side, no less than up to the mark, ensuring the correct rounded shape of the pipe.
4. Place the union nut and split ring onto the pipe.
5. Moisten the fitting.
6. Place the pipe on the fitting so that the end of the pipe rests with its entire plane against the edge of the fitting. Screw the union nut by hand until it stops on the fitting. The nut should tighten easily; if this does not happen, it means you are not turning it according to the thread. Further forceful tightening of the nut will lead to damage to the thread and, as a result, to leakage of the connection and subsequent replacement of the fitting.
7. Holding the fitting body with one wrench, use another wrench to tighten the union nut 1–2.5 turns so that 1–2 threads remain visible. The use of wrenches with additional levers is unacceptable - do not apply excessive force or overtighten the nut.

To avoid fogging of pipes or to insulate them, special corrugated hoses, most often made of foamed polyethylene, are put on the pipes. If for some reason the corrugation was not installed, but the need for it arose, then it can be installed later. For this corrugated pipe cut lengthwise and put on the pipe, after which it is secured with tape.

Figure 13 shows the installation of a tee fitting; in fact, the range of compression fittings is quite rich, it allows you to assemble a pipeline of almost any complexity.
