DIY clay lamps. Workflow Stages

I really liked the idea of how
SHAPE A LAMP

They are simply simple to make and at the same time they look very original: table lamps, floor lamps and all kinds of candlesticks. A minimum of imagination, a little manual labor and again you get a whole direction in the topic of interior lighting.

Sculptors from the Aton studio (Canada) have come up with an interesting and very simple way to make designer lamps. Haven't you figured out how to make them yourself yet? - I’m telling...

There is now such a material - plastic clay. It comes in different consistencies, including in the form of a paste. You can buy it in art supply stores.

Handmade

SO. We take a cardboard juice bag, or any other packaging, box, tube from a roll of paper. And we squeeze this clay out of the bag in a chaotic artistic disorder onto a blank. Let our work dry thoroughly, crumple it or carefully take out the box and place our work on a base with a light bulb. That's it - the lamp is ready.

If you can't find clay, liquid nails or hardening sealants/putties/putties will gladly replace it. The principle of creating a lamp is the same.

What does an exclusive interior look like? Qualified designers will certainly say that exclusivity lies in the original design, expensive finishing, custom-made furniture and rare ornaments. For ordinary people, exclusive means, first of all, creativity and the opportunity to make interior items with your own hands. Ideas for creating homemade jewelry are limited only by a person’s imagination, because even beginners in the hand-made art can make a truly original thing.

Lamps and chandeliers made from scrap materials look most original in the interior. For inspiration, we suggest considering a few creative ideas.

Lamps made of polymer clay

Polymer or plastic clay is a special material with a paste-like consistency that was originally used in fine arts. Today it is actively used in creating unusual ornaments, in particular lighting fixtures.

To make a candelabra from polymer clay, you will need a regular cardboard juice or milk bag, paste and a structure with a lamp. You can also use a cylindrical cardboard tube as a “foundation”. Paste is applied to this bag (tube) in any shape, which ultimately forms the desired pattern.

After the polymer clay has completely dried, the base must be removed and the resulting lampshade installed on the structure with the lamp. To prevent the possibility of material melting and fire, it is better to give preference to energy-saving fluorescent lamps.

PVC pipe lampshades

Surprisingly, PVC pipes are often used for purposes other than their intended purpose. Due to its flexibility, the material allows you to create such unique interior items as lampshades for chandeliers, floor lamps and sconces.

To make a lampshade with slits and patterns, you will need a drill with various attachments and a hair dryer, which will give the slits the required shape. A PVC pipe can become the basis for organizing volumetric lighting with partial shade. In order to give the structure stability, it should be placed on a heavy stand.

Instead of a regular lamp, a PVC pipe lamp can be equipped with LEDs. They are not only safer to use (practically do not heat up), but also more decorative. The range of LED strips is represented by models with variable lighting, which allows you to adjust the level of illumination and the color of the backlight itself.

Do-it-yourself lampshade made of threads

Shades for chandeliers made of threads look very unusual in the interior. To make them, you will need a regular inflatable ball or ball, a ball of thread (or several balls of different colors), PVA glue and a design with a light bulb.

Before starting to create a masterpiece, it is recommended to hang the inflated balloon for ease of work. Then you need to attach the end of the thread to it using tape and start winding the threads in any order. Each wound layer is coated with glue so that the resulting shape does not deform.

After winding the threads, the future lamp should be thoroughly dried until the structure hardens. The final step is to deflate the ball and remove it from the lampshade.

Reanimation of old lamps

To add a touch of individuality to a room, it is not necessary to make new interior items, because sometimes it is enough to update the old ones. If the lampshade of a floor lamp or night light has long gone out of fashion, it can be updated using improvised means.

A DIY lamp is actually very easy to make. At the same time, they also look very original: floor lamps, table lamps, all kinds of candlesticks. A minimum of imagination, a little manual labor and you get a whole direction in the topic of interior lighting. And most importantly, you don’t have to pay money for it! It is enough to arm yourself with your own imagination and the necessary materials. We will make a lamp from plastic, or as it is also called, polymer clay.

There is now such a material - plastic clay. It comes in different consistencies, including in the form of a paste. You can buy it in art supply stores. There are such stores in any more or less large city. As you can see, there will be expenses, of course, but not as significant as if you decided to buy a ready-made lamp in a store.

So, what do we need to make the same lamp with our own hands?

1

We take an ordinary cardboard bag of kefir, or any other packaging, for example, juice. If you want to get a cylindrical shape, you can use a bottle or tube from a paper roll.

2

Then we squeeze polymer clay onto this blank from the bag in any direction.

3

Let our work dry thoroughly, and then carefully remove the base from the inside - a box or bottle.

4

After this, you can already install our resulting lamp on a structure with a light bulb.

That's all the work - the lamp is ready for use.

If it suddenly happens that you do not find clay, then it can be replaced with hardening sealants or liquid nails. Putties and putties will also work. But you need to be more careful with them - they are fragile. In all other respects, the principle of manufacturing the lamp does not change.

Photo examples of interesting polymer clay lamps

Polymer clay, or thermoplastic as it is otherwise called, is a material that resembles plasticine in its texture and consistency. After heat treatment, the plastic takes on a solid form. Various jewelry is made from it - rings, bracelets, necklaces, pendants, earrings, as well as souvenirs, for example, magnets and figurines, lamps and photo album covers, photo frames and wine glasses, toys

In order to begin this type of needlework, you need to purchase the necessary materials. These include:

Polymer clay;

Special varnish;

Solid work surface;

Stationery knife;

Various sticks and stacks;

Gloves;

For a more advanced lesson, you will need to purchase various professional materials - a special syringe with many attachments, a paste machine, cutting molds and other items. But this is worth paying attention to when it is definitely determined that a person will continue to engage in modeling. Otherwise, he will simply waste his money.

Before purchasing thermoplastic, it is better to decide in advance on the color of the material. You should focus on what kind of product you are planning to make. It is recommended to definitely buy white timber in order to dilute especially bright colors with it.

To give the creations shine and rich color, the finished product is coated with varnish, which can be purchased at a store specializing in craft supplies or in construction departments. Varnishes come in matte and glossy.

The working surface must be smooth to avoid particles of material getting into its structure. Glass, tiles, or plain paper work best.

To cut the clay cleanly, it is recommended to use a sharp utility knife. The sharper it is, the less the product is deformed during operation. Stacks and sticks are used to give the object outlines, various depressions and other subtleties of design.

To prevent fingerprints from remaining on the finished product, which can ruin the entire appearance, you should use gloves when working with clay; they can be purchased at the pharmacy. It is important that they fit your hand tightly for ease of use.

Foil is used for heat treatment of products. It is used to form a kind of stand or simply cover the surface on which the product will be baked.

After creating a masterpiece, you need to place it in the oven or a specially purchased stove, after being in which the product will become hard. Then it needs to be varnished, allowed to dry, and it will be ready for use.

A polymer clay lamp can diversify the idea of lighting in general and break certain stereotypes. This product is cheap to make and it won’t be difficult to “assemble” something similar with your own hands.

For production we will need:

  • polymer clay;
  • small LED light bulb;
  • paste machine or roller for rolling out polymer clay;
  • glitter;
  • brush;
  • glue.

1. First you need to decide on the size of the night light. The dimensions of the sides of my night light are 7.5 cm by 10.5 cm. Now you need to cut out a template from paper, taking into account the sizes of all four sides. Next, on this template we draw a picture, which we will then cut out.

2. Take the clay and knead it well (I mixed two colors to make streaks). We calculate the amount of material approximately so that we can cover the entire surface of the template.

3. Roll out. Preferably not very thin.

We attach the template and cut out the design with a knife.

We leave the hearts, they will be useful to us.

We cut the sides of the night light together and cut off the excess along the edges.

We attach the cut out hearts that we have left.

We take glitter and apply a thin layer on top with a brush (they will stick to the polymer clay themselves).

It was possible to assemble the entire product using some kind of template, but I went a different route.

Now let’s slightly strengthen the sides of the night light. To do this, roll up the strands and attach them on the back side along the edges and across.

All that remains is to mold a corner like this, with the help of which we will attach all four sides.

Now that all the parts are ready, we send them to bake at the temperature indicated on the packaging of your polymer clay.

After baking, cool. We cut the corner into 8 parts with a knife and glue all four sides of the night light to the corners using glue. The type of lighting itself can be varied. I placed a small battery-powered LED light bulb in the center and the night light is ready!
