Spider daylilies get their name from their narrow, curved petals. They, like all daylilies, are not fussy to care for, but they look really original.

Spider daylilies easily tolerate rain; their petals do not cling to each other. And even wet weather cannot stop them from opening. The buds do not rot. When you plant this type of daylily, you will notice very bright and pure colors and a graphic shape.

It is interesting that the daylily, which was first called “spider”, was bred back in 1940. But it did not attract attention even among those who are true admirers of daylilies in general. At that time, none of the breeders began to extract from them required quantity interesting varieties.

  2. Make a mound in the center of the hole and place the plant on top of it. Gently distribute the roots.
  3. Make sure that the root collar of the daylily is not more than a couple of centimeters below ground level.
  4. Sprinkle the root with fertile soil. Fill the entire space so that there are no air pockets.
  5. After the flower is planted, water it generously.
Spider daylilies look good especially against the background of hostas. Spiders are planted in the same way as tapeworms and in small homogeneous groups.

General rules of care

Watering should not be too frequent. It is enough to water them once or twice a week. Daylilies respond favorably to various fertilizers. In order for the fertilizer you use to bring only benefits, it is advisable to thoroughly study the shortcomings of your soil. And based on this knowledge, select fertilizers. Important components are divided into mineral and non-mineral. Non-mineral: whirlpool, oxygen, and carbon. All these nutrients are in the air and water. Their normal content is controlled by nature itself.

Minerals include macroelements - nitrogen and potassium, for example, which are especially needed by plants. And microelements that contribute to normal development and growth - Boron, Copper, Iron, Chlorine and Manganese.

Main pests

Thrips can occur at temperatures of 10-12 ºC. They suck juice from leaves, stems and petals. If thrips have taken over your flower, dig up the bush and burn it. For preventative purposes, treat the soil around daylilies with insecticides in spring and autumn.

The lily gnat lays its larvae in the flower itself. After the larvae sprout, they feed on it. And over time, the flower becomes deformed. If you notice them on one flower, simply remove it.

If slugs appear on the flowers, you will only have to remove them manually.

Rust on your daylilies can occur if there is patrinia growing nearby. Therefore, under no circumstances plant these plants together. For prevention, it is enough to treat the flowers with fungicides.

Rarely what ornamental plant It can bloom in one place for many years. Daylilies, the varieties with photos and names of which are described below, are capable of not only growing, but also blooming luxuriantly, striking each year with their variety of shapes and colors.

Today, tens of thousands of large and miniature varieties are available to gardeners who are passionate about these plants. Large flowers appearing above the foliage illuminate the garden with all shades of yellow and red, pink and lilac, white and deep purple.

Such diversity of daylilies was achieved thanks to complex hybridization using species plants.

Species and hybrid daylilies

It was not the brightest and most spectacular species of plants, even today common in gardens and parks, that became the ancestors of hybrid daylilies, which are much superior to the “natural savages” in the brightness of colors, the duration of flowering and the unexpected forms that, thanks to breeders, flower corollas received.

The most famous and widespread are three species forms. Brown-yellow daylily (Hemerocallis fulva) with pointed linear leaves, growing in sunny areas and in partial shade, forms powerful clumps. Above them, peduncles with orange flowers are clearly visible, swaying regularly on peduncles up to a meter high.

Yellow daylily (Hemerocallis flava) resembles the previous species, but its leaves are more prone to droop as they grow. The corollas of flowers with a diameter of about 10 cm have a sunny yellow color.

Another natural species that became the ancestor of modern hybrid plants is the lemon yellow daylily (Hemerocallis citrine). Plants up to 120 cm high with graceful light yellow or greenish flowers bloom en masse from the second half of summer.

The first cultivated varieties of daylilies were created using intraspecific selection, therefore, preserving the characteristics of their ancestors, they received larger flowers, spectacular double corollas, began to bloom longer and were less dependent on growing conditions. The names and photos of these varieties of daylilies are still well known to flower growers. But hybrids managed to gain maximum popularity, for which, due to the abundance of shapes, colors and other characteristics, a special classification was developed.

Existing hybrid daylilies are distinguished by flower shape, highlighting:

  • simple, closest to natural appearance;
  • terry, with a double or triple set of petals;
  • arachnids, with elongated petals making the corolla look like an insect;
  • unusual or uncertain shape;
  • as well as multiforms and polymers, which, based on one or another characteristic, can be classified into several groups at once.

No less important than the shape of the flower, the duration of flowering and the time of its beginning are important for the gardener. Based on this characteristic, plants are divided into several groups from early to very late. There are daylilies that bloom only once a year, but more and more often breeders are introducing hybrid plants in which the formation of buds occurs in waves, several times during the summer.

Since each daylily corolla lives only for a day, varieties of night-, day-, and long-flowering types are distinguished. Knowing the characteristics of the crop, you can choose varieties for your garden that will make it unique at any time of the day.

The sizes of daylilies themselves and the flowers that open on them vary greatly. Miniature varieties do not exceed 30–40 cm in height, and giants can produce flower stalks up to one and a half meters. Corollas up to 7–8 cm are considered small. The most spectacular flowers have a diameter of about 15–17 cm.

Meanwhile, they are becoming more and more diverse: new types of color and pattern appear, varieties with huge and tiny flowers,. The group of daylilies with a “spider-like” flower shape stands out especially.

Talented and enthusiastic hybridizers at one time chose different paths. There were also those who appreciated the modest grace of species daylilies with narrow elongated petals. Gradually a new group was formed in the garden classification - spiders ( spider- from English "spider"). The association is inspired by the similarity of the thin, curved petals of the flower with the legs of this creature, which is known to have eight of them. But many spider varieties are characterized by “multi-petal”, when instead of six, like a regular flower, there are also eight. Most likely, it was a similar incident that gave someone the idea to give this figurative name.

Ninety years ago an American Le Moine Bechtold from Missouri became interested in the hybridization of narrow-petalled species. From 1949 to 1952 he registered several hybrids. Among them was a yellow one" Kindly Light"- one of the founders of modern spiders. The variety became very popular and received the first special award for spiders in 1989.

In the mid-1980s, the spider group was officially recognized by the American Daylily Society. In accordance with the proportions of the petals, all varieties were divided into three groups. To measure, select the longest of the blossomed petals and straighten it along the length and width (as opposed to round large-flowered varieties, which are measured in horizontal plane, without straightening). Spiders ( Spider) the ratio of the length and width of the petals is not less than 5.0: 1. For spider variants (Spider Variant) - 4.0-4.9: 1. To the group of varieties unusual shape (Unusual Form - UFO) combined everything with a too “exotic” flower shape. However, in 2003, the first two groups were merged into one - the spiders themselves. Although in old publications, books, and the Internet you can still find the previous interpretation.

Daylilies of unusual shape are often mistakenly called spiders because of their external similarity. Therefore, for daylilies with narrow petals widely spaced from each other, the concept of “spider-shaped flower” is used. In everyday life, many well-known varieties that are not even included in the group of “unusual” are also mistakenly called spiders. For example, lemon yellow" Mynelle's Starfish" or " Gadsden Firefly"with medium-sized flowers up to 9 cm in diameter.

To the group of daylilies with an unusual flower shape ( UFO) includes:

  • twisted - with petals pinched at the ends (like " Lola Branham", "Lake Norman Spider", "Navajo Gray Hills"); twisted along the center line, like curls, and petals rolled into a tube along the axis.
  • cascading - the tips of the petals look inside the flower, hang down in a cascade ( "Primal Scream").
  • spatula - the inner petals at the tips are wider, so they look like a kitchen spatula (" Golliwog", "Dancing Summerbird").

Spiders themselves, like varieties of unusual shapes, are very diverse. The petals are twisted along (" "Magic of Oz") or flowing, like " Judge Roy Bean".

New products appear with corrugated and jagged edges (" Heavenly Beginning"). The palette and design are becoming more and more intricate every year. Almost white varieties have appeared. The diameter of the flower has long exceeded 25 cm, in some daylilies it reaches 30 (" Jan's Twister"), even 35.5 cm (" Long Tall Sally"). Many spiders bloom for a long time, sometimes the flowers last for almost two days even in hot weather. American flower growers also note that spiders are more resistant to drought.

Recently, it has been possible to convert many old (diploid) varieties into tetraploid forms. The advantage is obvious - thanks to the doubled set of chromosomes, the potential diversity of future hybrids, both in color and stability, increases many times. Many spiders, which previously had a significant drawback - weak peduncles, lying under the weight of blossoming flowers, are gradually “getting back on their feet”! Such famous varieties as "Sergeant Major", "Firebird Suite", "Mint Octopus"" (UFO), now they not only bloom beautifully and abundantly, but also hold on tightly!

The newest direction is the breeding of double “arachn-like” daylilies. They belong to the group of unusual shapes, but collectors most often call such varieties “terry spiders.” Ian Joyner, the creator of fantastic daylilies, was particularly successful in this area. "Airy Delight", "Fashion Leader", "Feminine Fingers", "Fluttering Beauty", "Firefly Frenzy"" (and fragrant too!), " Sebastian The Crab", "Tickle My Fanc y".

The ability to grow well, bloom profusely and for a long time, bloom early in the morning and last until night, not afraid of cloudy weather. Unfortunately, not all foreign novelties perform well in our temperate climate - after all, almost all of them come from American nurseries located in the subtropics. When exposed to harsh winters and cool summers, they may show their shortcomings - low winter hardiness, inability to open flowers completely, susceptibility to discoloration or instability to fungal diseases.

When using such daylilies in garden design you need to take into account the unusual outlines of their flowers. In addition, in most varieties they are very large and, as a rule, there are few of them. Such extravagant plants can create a “tropical” effect. Their huge flowers resemble exotic plants, especially against the backdrop of large hostas or lush shrubs. Spiders can be planted as tapeworms or in small homogeneous groups. At the height of flowering, they will make an extraordinary impression.

The origin of planting material is very important. Daylilies are propagated by dividing bushes in nurseries or in laboratories using tissue culture. My Family Garden - Help

Dear friends!

It’s very easy to get lost in such a large assortment of all kinds of products and of course you want so many things! But it happens that it is not possible to order everything at once.

So that you don’t lose the products you like and don’t waste time searching for them, we have created a convenient section for you where you can save the items you like.

Now you can create your own “Family Garden”.

On the page of our new section you have the opportunity to create convenient lists for you where your plans for future plantings will be stored.
Sort products into lists by price, culture, planting time, or any property convenient for you.

Did you like something but want to order it later?
Create a list, save the selected items there and, when the time comes, click the “all items to cart” button. The total amount of the future order will be shown in the lower right corner.

To get started, use the already created “Favorites” list and save all the items you like to it. If you want to create a list with your own name, just click the “Add new list” button. Give it any name that will help you navigate, for example, “Seeds for 2016”, “My Club”, “Summer Flowerbed”, etc. And when the time comes, in a few clicks order all the necessary goods, for example, for your winter garden.

Now viewing the detailed description of the product, you can click the “Add to My Family Garden” button, and the product you like will be saved in the folder of your choice.

Easy, fast, convenient! Happy shopping!
