Types of faucet mounting. Faucet with nut: types and functions Which faucet mount is better, a stud or a nut

If you need to replace a faucet in the bathroom or kitchen, but have no experience in performing such work, do not despair. This does not mean at all that the task is impossible and you will have to call a plumber. It is enough to carefully study the manual and scrupulously follow all the instructions. Do you agree?

We will tell you in detail how to install a faucet on a sink. Here you will find out what technological features When installing the device, it is necessary to observe what types of sinks are being installed on. The article also lists common mistakes that you should not make. home handyman.

Almost every adult man is able to install a faucet at home. It’s just that you don’t always have similar experience behind you, and sometimes it’s awkward to ask more experienced colleagues.

will come to the rescue detailed process installation, which will eliminate many questions and give confidence in own strength– installation of the mixer is quite simple.

How to prepare for installation?

Before you begin the actual installation, you will need to go through preparatory stage. First you need to carefully inspect the sink if it is already installed in the bathroom. If this kitchen sink, then it still needs to be studied. First of all, you are interested in the number of holes provided by the manufacturer for the future mixer.

Often the manufacturer completes the original sink bowls with a faucet with all the parts necessary for installation. But this is only possible in expensive models, where all the plumbing elements are designed in the same style.

When purchasing a faucet, it is important to check that all parts are included. After all, installation will require nuts, sealing gaskets, flexible or rigid connections. The availability of all components should be paid attention to before purchasing the product.

If the faucet was purchased online, then, after unpacking the purchase, you should consider everything, study the available parts, instructions and assemble the faucet in the sequence indicated in it

When the mixer of the desired model and size has been purchased, the instructions have been studied, all that remains is to install it. To do this, you will need tools that it is advisable to prepare before starting work.

These are wrenches, adjustable wrenches, sealing tape, masking tape, a small key, a screwdriver, pliers, a flashlight, a plumbing mixer kit with all components, a piece of soft cloth.

You may need to buy 2 additional hoses if the length of the pipes that come with the mixer is not sufficient. And you will also need a hacksaw for metal if you are going to install a model with a mechanical adjustment.

It is important that everything you need is at hand and nothing distracts you during installation.

If the bathroom has already been in use, then most likely you will have to remove it first old mixer. It is important to do everything extremely carefully so as not to damage the sink if you do not plan to replace it. It is better to line the bottom of the container with a piece of soft cloth to avoid accidental chips and scratches.

Then you need to turn off the water supply taps to the mixer. If there are none, then you will have to turn off the water in the entire apartment/house. Then you need to check this by opening the mixer - if nothing drips, then you can proceed with dismantling.

If you plan to completely change a set of plumbing fixtures, then, naturally, it will be done first. Then you will need to turn off the water supply and lay down soft cloth on front part containers to protect against accidental damage.

Description of installation technology

If preparatory work carried out correctly, then installing the faucet on a ceramic sink will not take much time - on average it will take about 30 minutes. This is provided that the instructions included in the kit have been read and the mixer itself has been assembled.

Some faucets are sold disassembled - before you begin installing such a model, you will have to assemble it

The easiest way to install a faucet on a ceramic sink is if it is not yet secured to its place of work. When this is not possible, installation may be a little difficult and you will need a flashlight. In places that are difficult to reach, you will need to illuminate them with a flashlight - an assistant will be needed here.

It is important to measure the expected length from the tap to the water pipes and estimate the length of the supply hoses that come with the mixer

In order to attach the faucet to the sink, you need:

  • Using a 10 or 11 wrench, screw the flexible hose to the mixer. You can use a flexible corrugated stainless steel tube.
  • Place a rubber or silicone gasket on the base of the faucet.
  • Using a key or your hands, screw in 2 studs one at a time. If the model comes with a bushing, then you won’t have to install any studs.
  • Thread flexible hoses into the hole in the sink.
  • Place the horseshoe-shaped mounting piece on the bottom.
  • Place a metal washer of the same shape on top of the gasket.
  • Attach a union nut to each of the two studs, tightening the adjustable or wrench for reliability.

When tightening the nuts, it is important not to overdo it - the connection may burst and will leak water. If you tighten the nuts loosely, the fastening will dangle and the faucet on the sink will continue to dance from side to side.

So, you bought a faucet to replace an old one or to equip a sink with a new set and decided to take on the installation yourself. On the one hand, connecting and installing a faucet on the sink with your own hands is very simple - anyone can do it. On the other hand, even having some experience, but not knowing elementary rules, you can do the job poorly or completely ruin the product, for example, by knocking off threads, bending inlets, etc. Another reason why you still have to contact a plumber is the lack of a set of plumbing tools. But this problem is completely solvable, because you can always ask your friends for something.

We tried to explain as clearly as possible how to install a faucet in the kitchen with your own hands, reliably and correctly.

List of required tools and spare parts

Before you begin installing kitchen plumbing with your own hands, you need to prepare and purchase everything you need. You will need:

  1. FUM sealing tape - it’s better not to use flax tow, as it swells with water, and then it will be difficult to remove the liners;
  2. Open-end wrench 10 or 11;
  3. Tubular wrench – needed to tighten a hard-to-reach nut when installing the faucet to the sink;
  1. Installation kit - it should contain rubber O-rings, that is, half washers (2 pcs.), one horseshoe-shaped metal half washer, a stud (1 or 2) and a nut. This set is included with the mixer, but if you wish, you can buy a thicker and stronger O-ring, since manufacturers do not always include high-quality gaskets in the kit;

  1. Pliers, a small wrench, a screwdriver - sometimes these are also needed;
  2. A rag, a basin and a flashlight will also come in handy so that you can see everything;
  3. And finally, the main thing - 2 plumbing connections - are included in the kit, but it is better to buy others, since the factory ones are often short and made of silumin;

Perhaps it’s worth paying attention to the eyeliners. Keep in mind that:

  • The eyeliners need to be of such length that they do not break, but bend in the form of a semicircle, that is, they should not be too long or, conversely, short when tight. The most common length is 86 cm;
  • If the factory eyeliner is too short, then it is better not to try to extend it, but to buy a new one;
  • In addition, do not buy silumin hoses, especially if you bought a silumin mixer - at least the connections should be reliable;
  • Installation of flexible hoses is easier than connecting rigid ones, but they are considered less reliable, so it is better to install them together with tap taps;
  • The set of eyeliners must include gaskets;
  • Replacing an old faucet in the kitchen most often involves replacing the old connections, because they also wear out.

Step.1. Dismantling the old mixer and preparing for installation

Before installing a faucet in the kitchen, you need to turn off the water (there is no need to turn off the riser) and, just in case, lay a rag on the bottom of the sink so that small details did not fall into it, and the large ones did not damage.

Of course, replacing a kitchen faucet requires dismantling the old faucet. To do this you need:

  • First, disconnect the old hoses from the cold and hot water pipes by hand or with an open-end wrench. Do not forget to place a basin under them and drain all the remaining water, after which the threads of the pipes must be wiped clean.
  • Then, using a tubular wrench, you need to unscrew the clamping nut on the stud (or two studs), which secures the faucet to the sink (right under it). When you unscrew this nut, the metal half washer will also come off.
  • Now you need to pull out the mixer along with the hoses from the sink hole. Well, that's all, you can proceed to the next step.

Step 2. Assembling the mixer and connections

Installing a faucet in the kitchen begins with its assembly, that is, with connection to flexible hoses or rigid connections.

  • If you have a two-handle mixer like the one in the photo on the right, then most likely you need to assemble it first. To do this, insert the spout (faucet) into the body up to the restrictive ring and manually, without tightening it too much, screw them to each other.

Now take the FUM tape and wrap it a little around the end of the eyeliner.

  • Wrapping tape around the tip is not necessary since the hose already has a gasket.

Then we insert the end of the first line into the corresponding hole in the mixer as in the photo below and screw it on first with our own hands, and then slightly tighten it with a 10-mm open-end wrench. Screw on the second hose in the same way.

  • It is very important not to tighten too much, otherwise the lining will be damaged! But not making it is also bad.

And finally, screw the pin-pin (or 2 pins) with the thread up into the hole provided for it. Our assembled faucet is almost ready for installation. All that remains is to thread both hoses into the o-ring, bring it to the base of the mixer body and secure it there as shown in the photo on the right.

Step 3. Install the faucet on the sink

Now it's time to put the faucet on the sink.

  • By the way, it is more convenient to install the faucet on a sink that is not yet built-in, since it is not very convenient to work by climbing under the countertop (in this case, installation is done this way).

IN mounting hole When washing, we insert the ends of the hoses, place the faucet and ask someone to hold it so that you are comfortable.

Then, from below, under the countertop or from below the removed sink, we put a second rubber pressure washer on the liners. In the end it turns out that two rubber seals will protect the body both above and below the sink. Now we also attach a horseshoe-shaped metal washer (photo below).

We put the nut on the stud from below and tighten it using:

  • A tubular wrench, in case you need to replace the faucet with an already installed sink. The photo below shows the mount from below.

  • Using an open-end wrench – if you are installing the faucet on a new or removed sink. Of course, after this you need to install the sink itself on the countertop and only then proceed to connect the mixer to the cold and hot water pipes.
  • Tighten the nut firmly, but not too tight!

Step 4. Connecting to pipes

Finally, we connect the hoses to the water outlet pipes, taking into account that:

  • Hot water outlet - from the right pipe;
  • The cold outlet is from the left pipe.

  • Sometimes cold water is discharged through a pipe that is located on top, and hot water- through the pipe from below as in the photo below.

The nut for a bathroom faucet is one of the main fixing elements. Failure of this element can lead to unpleasant consequences, ranging from small leaks to major leaks. It is especially unpleasant if a breakthrough occurs while you are not at home.

There can be two reasons for a leak (regardless of the type and purpose of the part):

  • The gasket is worn out;
  • The thread has broken (due to mechanical damage or poor quality manufacturing).

In principle, there is nothing terrible or irreparable about this. You will need a tool and basic plumbing skills to produce do-it-yourself repair mixer

Nut for the mixer: repairing the mixer

If the nut on the mixer tap starts to leak, it’s okay. To perform repair and restoration work, you will need a key, FUM tape and a new gasket. Now let's look at the features of performing work in the two above-mentioned cases.

The gasket is worn out

If the cause of the leak is the gasket, then repairing the faucet will not be difficult. If you live in a small town where there is no specialized plumbing store and there is no opportunity to buy spare parts for timely replacement of worn-out elements, you can make the part yourself.

For these manipulations you will need rubber (a piece of a car inner tube) and scissors.

Problem

If the problem lies there, then everything is somewhat more complicated. The reasons for its failure may be the following:

  • When installing the mixer, you overtightened the part, as a result of which a microcrack formed due to a broken thread;
  • A loose part can also cause problems. To eliminate a leak, you just need to take a key and tighten the structural element;
  • You broke the nut - the thread led to leakage and further exploitation the product is simply impossible (unfortunately, the part cannot be repaired).

If you are using a non-expensive mixer (domestic and Chinese models), then it will be easier not to look for a nut, but to install a new product. At the same time, it is recommended not to throw away the old mixer, but to disassemble it into spare parts that will be useful for subsequent repairs.

If the model is expensive, it will be easier to find a part - they are sold in any specialty store. You can order the part on the Internet (but you will have to wait and listen to the noise of falling drops for 1-2 weeks).

Mixer nut

The mixer nut is a similar part that differs only in its shape and diameter. Accordingly, all repair and restoration manipulations are carried out in the same way. In this case, there is one nuance - the material used to make the nut. For example, Chinese faucets are equipped with parts made of composite, lightweight materials based on aluminum. More reliable Italian and German faucets are equipped with nuts made of stainless steel and brass.

The latter are much stronger and more durable than their Chinese counterparts - steel and brass do not crack. It is difficult to break such a “part” even by hitting it with a hammer. The only reason why it can fail is a broken thread. That is why in the kitchen it should not be tightened too much, without much fanaticism.

Now you know why the faucet is leaking and how to solve it this problem. If the problem really lies in the connection, then there are a couple of recommendations that will help make better repairs:

  • When purchasing a new nut, buy not one, but two parts (this will be useful for the future);
  • To make gaskets, always keep a piece of rubber on hand or cut a dozen pieces at once, so that in case of a leak, you can quickly and promptly respond to a breakdown;
  • If a Chinese faucet breaks down, don’t rush to call a plumber. His services may cost more than buying a new product.

Also, do not forget to systematically change the gaskets in the mixer, at least once every 1.5-2 years. This will avoid troubles and accidental floods.

How often do you call a plumber?

Mixing taps are made up of many elements, each of which performs specific functions. It is precisely on this basis that there cannot be small things in the system, and a unit such as a nut is very important for ensuring the functionality of the entire structure as a whole.

In fact, in any modification of the faucet there is a pair of nuts; we will look at what exactly they are and what functions they are intended for, since usually during repairs troubles arise with the fixing elements.

If you need to find a nut separately due to loss or damage to the complete one, then you should not forget a couple of simple rules:

The best selection option is by example It goes without saying that if you have an old element, then buying a new one instead is much easier. It is enough to compare two products and make sure that they have similar parameters and are interchangeable. But it is not always possible to have an example at hand, so it is possible to take with you a faucet part that requires a fastening element
Study the quality level If there is no example, then you need to take measurements very carefully and meticulously, and when choosing, select the option that is made better: there are no burrs on the thread, it is rolled evenly and carefully, there are no stains or cavities on the surface. Every little thing matters, because it is possible to draw conclusions from it about how well the element is made
Consider the type of tap cover Putting a copper nut on a chrome-plated structure, as well as on the contrary, is not best solution, because it doesn’t look very attractive. It goes without saying that this paragraph does not apply to cases where the fastening is hidden and simply will not be visible, in such a situation Any will do color

Advice! Another reason that speaks about the quality of the product is its mass. High-quality options weigh much more than fragile elements made of powder alloys, so it is better to choose those that are heavier.

As noted above, the design may contain different nuts; we will consider the most popular of them, since the number of models is huge and the design may contain atypical elements.

Types of nuts

Much more often during installation and repair work you have to deal with the following nodes:

  • Elements for fastening to the water supply; they are located on the inlet lines and in most cases are visible. Much more often they are rigidly fixed to the structure and replacing them is unrealistic; you need to buy a new mixer. Based on this, when working, be careful and do not apply too much force so as not to break the element; in addition, watch the position of the rubber gasket, it must stand straight.

  • The nut to the faucet body under the spout helps to fix the faucet gooseneck. Its main highlight is that the spout must not only be well fixed, but also move left and right; for this, there must be a plastic expansion washer under the nut. Tips for securing such units are simple: you do not need to apply too much force, but you need to tighten the system carefully so as not to scratch the outer decorative coating.
  • A clamping nut is also needed for systems installed on a sink or sink; it is located at the bottom and is not visible from the outside. The price of these elements is low, but it is better to buy a version made of brass or brass, so as not to worry about the unit being damaged by corrosion. It is possible to tighten the system with your own hands, without using a key, since too much force is not needed.

  • Another type is nuts that secure the cartridge in lever valves. They are hidden under a decorative ring and can only be reached by removing the handle. The design is enormous in size; in the upper part there are turnkey edges, and in the lower part there are threads of a certain size.

Features of the work

The installation instructions tell you the assembly procedure, but you will need to learn how to disassemble the system yourself.

Let's look at how to change the nut on a faucet if it cannot be unscrewed:

  • The first thing to do is to carefully tap the joint with a hammer on all sides; you do not need to apply too much force, so as not to damage the edges and the threaded connection.
  • Another option is to treat the structure with liquid key; this composition dissolves plaque and makes unscrewing much easier. Very difficult cases This operation can be repeated 2-3 times.
  • How to unscrew a stuck nut on a faucet if the above methods did not have the desired result? It is possible to use a hairdryer and heat the connection, this method It also allows you to cope with difficult problems.

Advice! You should unscrew the fasteners carefully, since if the edges are torn off, it will be much more difficult to carry out the work and you will need to make cuts on the structure.

Conclusion

Nuts are not the main element of the system, but their importance in the correct operation of the structure is difficult to overestimate. The video in this article will help you better understand this issue.

Periodically replacing the faucet in the kitchen is a very common phenomenon that almost every resident of our vast country has to deal with. As a rule, the need for this procedure arises due to intensive use in conditions of high hardness of tap water. The service life of cranes is also affected by the very mediocre quality of devices in the budget price segment.

In any case, if the faucet in the kitchen fails, our compatriots have two options: contact a qualified plumber or replace it yourself. This publication will describe in detail how to change the faucet in the kitchen with your own hands without the involvement of expensive specialists.

Types of Kitchen Faucets

Before starting to replace the faucet in the kitchen, the owner must decide on the choice of the device to be installed, because models can differ significantly in:

  • design;
  • operating principle;
  • installation method;
  • manufacturing material.

When choosing the “appearance” of the device, the owner must be guided by his own preferences. It will be very nice if appearance The mixer will be in harmony with the interior of the entire kitchen space.

The first thing you should pay attention to when choosing a device is the installation method. According to this parameter, all kitchen faucets are divided into two types: wall-mounted and table-top. The first ones are most often used to embody brave design ideas luxury interiors. A tabletop kitchen faucet is installed directly on the sink panel, which is very convenient during operation and maintenance of the device.

There are two types of faucet attachments to the sink:

Types of faucets

Today, modern industry offers three types of mixers:

  1. Valve. The design of this type of faucet involves the presence of two faucet boxes with valves that control the temperature and pressure of the flow. Advantages: accessibility, wide model range. The disadvantage is the very short service life of the basic structural elements.
  2. Single lever. The temperature and water pressure are controlled by changing the position of one lever. Advantages: modern design, ease of operation, variability of choice.
  3. Contactless. These are the most modern, functional and expensive devices. To turn on the faucet, you just need to bring your hand to the spout. The main disadvantage of contactless models is their very high cost.

A few words about the material from which modern faucets are made. Stainless steel, silumin, brass, bronze and ceramics can be used in their manufacture.

Silumin models show the shortest service life.

When choosing a kitchen faucet, you should pay attention to the design of the spout, which can be high, low or retractable. Low, convenient in the bathroom, but not in the kitchen. It is difficult to place a faucet under such a “spout” large saucepan or a kettle. Tall, convenient for everyday use, but in case of strong pressure, be prepared for splashes flying everywhere kitchen space.
Today, the most popular models are faucets with a pull-out spout.

When choosing a faucet for the kitchen, you should pay attention to models whose water jet will precisely hit as close to the center of the sink as possible.

Selecting mixer hoses

Before removing the faucet in the kitchen, it is necessary to dismantle the hoses supplying hot and cold water to the device. The problem is that during operation on them inner surface is formed limescale, which significantly reduces their flow area, which affects the reduction in water pressure in the mixer.

The supply hose fitting is made of soft non-ferrous metal. Dismantling these elements from the tap is often accompanied by a change in the thread geometry, which subsequently leads to a decrease in the tightness of the connection. That is why experts recommend that when installing a new device, complete replacement mixer hoses, given that they are supplied as standard on most models. However, their length most often does not exceed 30 cm, which may not be enough to connect the mixer to, and the quality of these components, as a rule, leaves much to be desired.

When purchasing new hoses, you should pay attention to the following parameters:

  • hose length;
  • diameter and type threaded connection with a water supply system;
  • fitting length.

The dimensions of the hose must correspond to the distance between the mixer and the connection point with the water supply system.

Hoses should be purchased with different fitting lengths for more easy assembly devices.

There are options with two types of threaded parts: “male” and “female”.

The standard nut diameter is ½ inch. To connect to the water supply system, “female” hoses are most often used.

Experts recommend purchasing corrugated flexible hoses made of stainless steel. They are more reliable, durable and high cost compared to metal braided rubber hoses.

In some cases, hoses are not used at all to connect the mixer to the water supply system. Instead, stationary ones are installed metal-plastic pipes.
To connect them to the mixer, specialized fittings are used.

Replacing a kitchen faucet yourself: stages of work

All work on replacing a kitchen faucet can be divided into two stages:

  • dismantling the old device;
  • installation of a new mixer and connecting it to the water supply system.

The first thing you need to do after purchasing a new device and components is to prepare the tool for work. You may need wrenches and wrenches. Which wrench is needed for the mixer depends on the model and the diameter of the nuts on the hoses. Most often these are open-end wrenches for 10x12, 22x24. For some models, a 10x12 and 12x13 deep stock socket wrench may be useful.

When using a faucet with a stud fastening, you may need open-end wrench on 11. If the faucet is supposed to be attached to the sink with a clamping nut, then the best option will use an adjustable wrench.

In addition, you may need pliers, a wire brush, flax tow and (or) fluoroplastic tape (fum tape), sealant, rags, and a bucket for draining water from the device. If the plumbing connections are made of metal, it may be necessary to remove rust from the thread grooves. This operation is best carried out with a metal brush.

Removing the old mixer

How to remove a faucet from a sink? Before proceeding with the actual dismantling of the old mixer, you need to do the following preparatory work:

  1. Turn off the water to the tap.
  2. Unscrew the siphon.
  3. Unscrew the union nuts of the hoses from the water supply system side.
  4. Remove the screws securing the sink to the kitchen cabinet countertop.

Now, the sink with the mixer needs to be turned over for easier access to the mixer mounting system. Next, we’ll look at how to unscrew a faucet from a sink that is secured with a clamping nut.

It's actually simple:

The universal lubricant WD-40 will greatly simplify the process of unscrewing stuck nuts.

Installing a new faucet

  1. We insert the faucet body into the mounting hole provided in the sink.
  2. We put a gasket on the thread, which comes complete with the new mixer.
  3. We tighten the structure with a clamping nut.
  4. We screw the supply hoses into the holes of the mixer. This must be done extremely carefully, tightening with a wrench no more than 2 turns of thread.

All that remains is to install the sink on the countertop and secure it with screws at the fastening points, then connect the hoses to the water supply system, being careful not to overtighten the connection to avoid deformation of the gasket.

To ensure tightness, experts recommend applying sealant to the back of the perimeter of the sink.

Before supplying water to the mixer, adjust the position of the device on the sink, and then tighten the clamping nut. The last stage is installing the siphon in its original place and checking the tightness of all connections.
