We wash down pillows at home - better than in the laundry. How to wash a feather pillow at home? How to dry a feather pillow at home

Our great-grandmothers were absolutely sure that there was no point in looking for best filler for a pillow than a feather. But no! In the era of technological progress, it has many competitors of synthetic origin. But many of us are in no hurry to part with a soft, comfortable, and most importantly, durable feather pillow. Thanks to our choice, the problem of how to wash is still relevant. feather pillow Houses.

Preparatory stage

  • Worry in advance about where you will pour the washed and dried filling - into an old but clean bedsheet, or is it better to sew a new one? Fortunately, now in stores there is a wide selection of teak - dense fabric for making bedsteads.
  • To properly wash and dry your feathers at home, prepare a cover made of loose material. An old pillowcase will also work well. You can sew a bag from a thick tulle curtain. It is not recommended to do this with gauze: the fluff will come out! It’s especially not worth using two layers of gauze, because the feathers will get stuck between the layers, and after washing your gauze will turn into the skin of a strange animal.
  • So, we have decided on the material for the case, and now we still need to choose correct sizes. Make the width of the cover the same as the width of the pillow, and make the length twice as long. This is necessary in order to properly wash and dry the filling. Don’t be lazy to sew two bags, because the smaller the contents, the better it will be cleaned.

You can wash pillows at home old-fashioned method, or you can take advantage of the achievements of technological progress.

Washing a pen in an automatic machine

Carefully pour the contents of the pillow into the prepared laundry bags. To do this, spread out one of its edges, baste the cover so that the fluff does not fly throughout the house. After you pour everything in, be sure to sew the cover up, not tie it.

If you decide to wash everything in one bag, throw some other items into the washing machine drum so that the load on the drum during washing is distributed evenly.

Wash with liquid detergent or down detergent.

The small pillow can be washed in washing machine, without pouring into the case. But put several small towels along with it, again to evenly distribute things in the drum. Effective washing of feather pillow filling occurs at a water temperature of no more than 30°C. If your machine has a mode for washing down products, choose it without hesitation. Otherwise, put it on a delicate wash with an additional rinse. It is recommended to choose the maximum spin.

How to dry a feather pillow

  • Pull the covers out of the drum. Use your hands to knead all the lumps and distribute the contents evenly throughout the bag. Place it on an old towel or sheet and roll it into a tight roll: the more moisture you remove, the faster it will dry. If you fail to dry the feather filling within 2 days, the feather will begin to mold.
  • The pillow can be dried in the dryer. Set the temperature to 30°C, do not forget to fluff the feathers in their cases from time to time. To be effective, throw a few tennis balls into the drum. Can be dried on a radiator outdoors in limbo. Sunbathing is very beneficial for feather filling: ultraviolet light disinfects it. Make sure that the pillow is blown by the wind from all sides.
  • When the feather is completely dry, carefully pour it into a clean quilt and carefully sew it with a double stitch (for security).

Washing the pen by hand

Pour warm water into a large basin, dilute the liquid detergent. The pillow can also be washed in laundry soap. It is especially good to use if someone in your household suffers from allergies. Grate the soap on a fine grater and thoroughly dissolve in warm water. The soap solution is ready.

Open the breastplate. Be prepared for small fluff to escape, so have a vacuum cleaner handy. Carefully transfer the contents into a washing container and leave it to soak for two hours so that all dirt, dust, and odors dissolve in the water. After soaking, drain off all the water. Use an old colander. Squeeze until most of the water is gone.

Rinse the feathers in a colander under the tap, pour them into a basin with fresh soapy water, and now you can wash them thoroughly. Drain the water again, rinse thoroughly and wring out as much as possible. Add natural ingredients to the rinse water aromatic oils– lavender, cypress or orange. They will add aroma and make for easy disinfection.

It is better not to use synthetic fragrances: their intrusive smell can cause headaches during sleep.

At this stage, a prepared fabric cover will come in handy. Place clean fluff into it and sew it up. And then dry it, not forgetting to knead the lumps and beat the filler. After each shaking it should visually increase.

Now put the clean pillow in the pillowcase and clean the house from fluff and feathers. Be proud of yourself: the hard work is done!

Healthy and deep sleep largely depends on the bed, bedding and pillow. The first thing should be comfortable, and the second should be clean.

As for the pillow, it should combine both of these characteristics. One of the most important stages of caring for this bedding accessory is washing, the nuances of which depend on the filler.

This article will tell you how to wash a feather pillow at home. Washing actually makes them as fluffy as when they were new.

A good way to preserve your pillows and extend their life is by washing them regularly and correctly. The key to this is to rinse them completely and dry them thoroughly. Washing will also help destroy dust bacteria, mites, dirt and sweat.

Feather pillows can be cleaned either manually or automatically. However, before washing a down pillow, you should know that it is not recommended to process it entirely.

The presence of special bags made of cotton fabric without holes is very welcome. If you don't have any, you can sew them by hand.

In total, you need about five bags for a medium product, or one large one, twice the size of the bedstead itself.

These bags are suitable for machine washing.

The preparation steps for washing a down pillow should include:

  • knocking out with a clapper to get rid of dust;
  • the napkin is ripped open from one edge;
  • the filler is transferred to the prepared bags. There is no need to fill them to capacity; 70 percent will be enough;
  • The covers are firmly sewn along the free edges.

Having freed the pillowcase from the filler, you can immediately start cleaning it, namely: thoroughly knock out the remaining fluff, wash it, and iron it after drying. If the cover does not suit your wishes, you can sew another one from teak. This fabric is suitable for these purposes.

Choosing a detergent

The choice of detergent solutions for washing feather products is important point, since the result of the entire event will depend on this. Ordinary washing powders It's better not to use it. This is explained by the difficulty of rinsing them out of the filler.

If it is not possible to use liquid powder, then you can put ordinary powder no more than 30 grams into the washing machine.

The most suitable substance for washing a down pillow is a gel intended for washing delicate fabrics or other products that do not spoil the structure natural fibers.

It could be liquid products"Unipuh" type intended for processing down jackets. Such preparations do not contain phosphates, which are difficult to rinse, bleaches or chlorine.

They quite effectively combat various contaminants and are gentle on the feather structure, preserving lipid molecules and breathability.

The filler is prevented from clumping and is protected from breakage.

When preparing to clean the pillow, you need to take care of the pillows that are placed in the drum of the washing machine. They not only help in removing dirt, but also prevent fluff from rolling off.

How to wash a feather pillow by hand

You can wash a down pillow at home without using a washing machine.

To do this, as mentioned above, you need to “disassemble” the product without packing the fluff into bags and carry out all the preparatory manipulations.

Direct washing is carried out as follows:

  1. The washing container is filled with warm water, 30 degrees;
  2. cleaning agents are added, especially for feather products, or a soap solution is made using laundry soap;
  3. feathers and fluff, pour into a container, soak for two hours;
  4. using a kitchen colander or a sieve, you need to collect and rinse the feathers under the tap, and put them in another container;
  5. after which the remaining soap solution is drained from the container and clean warm water is collected, detergents are added;
  6. Dip the washed feathers into the water and rub them with three hands;
  7. after which the filler is washed for some time running water, lightly wrung out, after which we proceed to the drying stage.

Before the last rinsing procedure, the feathers can be kept in water for several minutes, after adding a couple of spoons to the water essential oil, it is advisable to use oil with antiseptic properties. This procedure will refresh, disinfect, soften the feathers and fill them with a pleasant aroma.

Is it possible to machine wash a down pillow?

Washing feather pillows is also allowed in automatic mode, subject to all conditions such as:

  • use of delicate wash;
  • necessary temperature regime. Usually up to 40 degrees, unless otherwise specified by the manufacturer;
  • rinse 2-3 times;
  • low spin speed (up to 500 rpm).

These conditions should make automatic washing safe for the pillow.

How to wash a feather pillow in the washing machine

Automatic pillow cleaning includes the following steps:

  1. The drum of the washing machine is loaded with two or three covers with down. With a denser load, the fluff may clump into clumps due to vibration. The filling of a small pillow is washed in a large bag; in this case, you should put several towels in the drum, which will help distribute the load evenly.
  2. Cleaning agent without conditioner is poured into the machine.
  3. The use of special or tennis balls is encouraged.
  4. Washing mode - delicate or if there is a “duvet” function. The water temperature, in order to avoid destruction of the fluff structure, should not be hotter than 40 degrees. Better than 30.
  5. The speed at the spin stage should be set to the minimum (no more than 400) plus an additional rinse. If there is no choice of spin speed, the best solution it will be turned off completely.
  6. After washing, the bags of down are taken out and wrapped in a towel, squeezing out the water from them.

Refresh your pillow without washing by steaming

You can refresh your pillow by steaming, which is a worthy alternative to machine and hand washing.

If your household has a steamer or iron with the same function, you can clean the product as follows:

  • the pillow is suspended on a rope and secured with clothespins;
  • both sides are thoroughly steamed several times;
  • When finished, use your hands to spread the down filling evenly;
  • The pillow is placed on the surface to dry.

If the pillow is too dirty, then the result of steaming will not be similar to washing and will not replace it, but it will get rid of odors well and destroy various flora, mites, etc.

How to wash a swan feather pillow at home

The swan down filling has good wear-resistant qualities and, as a result, is durable.

This fluff is not susceptible to the proliferation of microorganisms and the formation of odors. To preserve these qualities, swan down needs to be looked after and done correctly.

The feather pillow can be washed manually or automatically. As in previous cases, the washing water should not be hot (30 degrees), the washing machine should be set to delicate mode.

Detergents containing chlorine are not suitable. In general, washing pillows made from swan down is no different from washing pillows with other feather fillings.

Drying

Proper drying is one of the most important stages cleaning a down pillow. Improper drying leads to the formation of a musty, unpleasant odor and promotes the formation of bacteria and microflora that love a humid environment.

  • such delicate items as down pillows, it is best to clean in the summer, which will allow the filler to dry quite quickly and prevent the appearance of mold;
  • after washing, the fluff should be spread out on a clean, dry surface without strong drafts, but with access to fresh air;
  • under the fluff and feathers you can place a fabric folded several times or several newspapers that will absorb moisture;
  • feathers, during the drying process, must be stirred regularly, which will provide an air flow for faster drying;
  • when lumps form, they should be broken up in a timely manner, not allowing them to cake;
  • to preserve the fluff, it can be covered with loose fabric or gauze;
  • It is advisable to prepare a larger area for drying feathers, because the less fluff there is on part of the area, the faster it will dry;
  • after complete drying, the filler is poured into a clean, fresh napkin and stitched with several lines;
  • When washing down in bags, it is better to dry it in the open air, hanging the bags in the shade. Direct sunlight can damage the filler. Every couple of hours the bags need to be shaken thoroughly;
  • if washing took place in winter period, then drying in frosty air will also disinfect the feathers.

Preventing feather mites

Mites in bedding are not only an unpleasant occurrence, but can also result in various dermatitis and other similar diseases.

Interesting fact! If a down pillow has not been washed for five years, almost 50% of its weight will be dust, epidermis, mites and their waste products.

To preserve the inside of a down pillow and extend its service life, there are several tips:

  1. By fluffing your pillow in the morning, the filler becomes saturated fresh air, which allows it to maintain elasticity.
  2. You need to take the pillow outside several times every six months for airing. This action will reduce the population of microorganisms.
  3. The pillow should be systematically knocked out with a dust cracker.
  4. Indoors with high humidity It is better not to store feather items.
  5. Also, do not store the product in plastic bags without access to air.

A fresh, perfectly clean pillow is the key to a full, healthy sleep, bringing real relaxation and restorative strength. Today there is no shortage of bedding - there are a huge number of pillows for sale for every taste, orthopedic shapes, with various synthetic fillings. But still, one of the most popular options is the classic feather pillow - convenient, comfortable, safe for health and durable. But you should remember that it requires special care, especially if it has not been cleaned for more than 4 years.

Natural down is able to perfectly transmit dust, which settles inside the product and can cause numerous allergic reactions. Dust is an ideal breeding ground for various pathogens and mites. To protect yourself and your loved ones, simply clean and wash your bedding regularly.

Is it washable?

The fastest and easiest way to clean up your feather accessories is to take them to a professional dry cleaner. But the most important disadvantage of this option is its high cost; the procedure will be quite expensive, since it also involves processing the filler using ultraviolet radiation and removing dirty, stuck together feathers. The cost of such a service is quite high, but for a year after dry cleaning you don’t have to worry about washing.

You can wash the product yourself, remembering a few simple rules. As the experience of many housewives shows, this can be done with equal success both in summer and in winter. Summer time it is preferable if you live in a private house and have the opportunity to spread the fluff outdoors. Otherwise, it is better to clean it in winter - freezing fluff allows you to effectively get rid of small ticks and other pathogens that could have grown in the pillow.

At home

The pillows can be washed either by hand or in a machine.

Important! Remember the basic rule of cleaning yourself - the product is washed only in parts, disassembled.

How to solve the problem at home in winter?
  • The first thing you need to do is prepare the product and the pen. The pillow can only be washed unassembled - this means that before cleaning it needs to be ripped apart and all the stuffing poured into other pillowcases, purchased or sewn yourself from the cheapest fabric. Great natural will do chintz or gauze.
  • Please note that the fluff from a large pillow will have to be poured into 5-6 bags; for a small product, 3 bags will be enough.

    Important! You should not try to scatter the filler into the bags as tightly as possible - the less fluff there is in the bag, the better it stretches and rinses.

  • The bags need to be tightly tied with a ribbon or simply sewn up, after which you can proceed directly to washing. The bags are washed in a deep basin - The water temperature level should be no more than 30-40 degrees. Products can be soaked in warm water for one to two hours.
  • Liquid or laundry soap, or liquid washing powder concentrate is added to the water - these are the products that are considered optimal for washing at home. After the first stage, the water is drained, the fluff is slightly squeezed out in order to escape excess moisture. You need to pour the next portion of water with detergent into the basin, and the wash is repeated. As a rule, in order to completely clean the packing from dust and dirt, it will need to be washed at least 4-5 times, regularly changing the water and powder.

Please pay special attention the fact that with all the diligence and maximum caution, it will not be possible to avoid the loss of fluff. In most cases, about 30-40% of the fluff is lost. In addition, be prepared for the fact that fluff will fly throughout the apartment during washing and drying - keep a vacuum cleaner nearby.

Drying

Proper drying is no less important than the washing process. After this, the bags with feathers need to be lightly wrung out and dried. You can dry the filler on the balcony, on a radiator or on other horizontal surfaces. Whip the fluff regularly and carefully break up any lumps.

Important! Feathers must be constantly turned over and shaken during drying so that they can dry completely. The drying process should not last more than 2 days, otherwise an unpleasant smell of dampness and mustiness cannot be avoided. In order to speed up the drying process, it is better to place large terry towel– thanks to this, excess moisture is quickly absorbed.

After the feathers are completely dry, they can be put back into the pillowcase. You can wash the pillow not only by hand, but also in the machine. ?

  • Feather products can be washed only in warm water, the temperature of which does not exceed 30-40 degrees. The delicate wash mode is considered ideal. Many modern washing machines are equipped with a special feather washing function.
  • To wash pillows in a machine, you can only use liquid laundry detergent., baby or laundry soap, crushed into small pieces. Today there are special gentle products for wool and down products on sale. You should absolutely not use conventional powders or bleaches, which can have a detrimental, aggressive effect on the structure of the fluff.
  • As in the case of hand washing, the pillow can also be washed disassembled - spread the old pillowcase on one side and pour the stuffing into several special bags or other pillowcases.

    Important! If in case hand wash bags with feather filling can simply be tied with ribbon or lace, but in the case of a typewriter, the bags will have to be sewn tightly. Even the tightest knots will not be able to withstand intensive washing.

  • When washing in a machine, be sure to set the double rinse mode, and, on the contrary, reduce the spin intensity to a minimum.
  • The rest of the washing principles are the same as in manual mode– bags with feathers are thoroughly washed, rinsed and dried.

Many housewives agree that hand washing is still preferable for down pillows. Even the utmost care cannot guarantee that small feathers will not get into the filter and other parts of the washing machine, leading to its malfunction.

Before you start washing, there are a few things to remember: important rules. This will help you get the highest quality results.

  1. When washing feathers either by hand or by machine, it is strictly forbidden to wring them too hard - this can break them and disrupt their structure. Many housewives advise using a very non-standard device for spinning in the form of an old kitchen colander - thanks to this, excess moisture will completely drain, and the structure of the filler will not be disturbed.
  2. When washing, it is best not to use special softening fabric softeners. Such products have a rather strong odor that will remain on the pillow for a long time and can cause various sleep disturbances or headaches.
  3. You can pour a few tablespoons of vinegar into the water - it will help the feathers straighten out and not get into lumps. Besides, acetic acid will provide additional antibacterial treatment and significantly delay the penetration of various pathogens inside.

These pillows are in every way more intricate than synthetic ones, and caring for them is also much more difficult. 1. Remove the pillowcase - it can still be washed and reused.
  2. Then carefully rip the napkin from one corner. There is no need to tear the entire side at once - in this case, the feather will scatter throughout the room and it will be difficult to collect it.
  3. Part by part, the feather is removed from the pillow and moved into special bags. They need to be prepared in advance by sewing them from old pillowcases, curtains or unnecessary fabric. You need to use durable, but at the same time, water-permeable material with a uniform weave of fibers. Then the filler is washed off and will not come out between the fibers during the washing process.
  4. Now the bags need to be tightly sewn up. It's not safe to just tie them. If the bag comes undone while spinning in the drum washing machine, feathers will ruin the washing machine.
  5. The final stage of preparation is choosing the optimal cleaning product. Today in the store you can easily purchase a special gentle product for caring for products made from natural down. At heavily polluted It is better to use the additional soaking function rather than hot water. It wouldn't hurt to rinse twice. If any detergent remains in the feathers, they will not dry properly and will begin to mold and develop an unpleasant odor.

There is no need to be afraid to turn on the spin cycle - this will not make your feathers worse; on the contrary, they will dry faster and will not become damp. Therefore, when washing feather pillows, you can safely choose a spin cycle at maximum speed.

If this is not done, the pen will dry for a long time and unevenly, forming sticky clumps. Small pads and feather bags can be dried entirely. you just need to make sure that the room is well ventilated or ventilated, and do not forget to shake them from time to time.

  • cleaning the pillow from accumulated dust using a beater or vacuum cleaner;
  • ripping one edge of the bedspread;
  • transferring feathers into previously prepared pillowcases;
  • thorough sewing of the edges of the covers.

Can pillows be washed? by machine? Absolutely yes. But you will need “helpers” - washing balls (can be replaced with plastic ones for playing table tennis). When washing, the balls hit the item, removing dirt and preventing the formation of a feather ball.

Directly washing feather pillows in a washing machine is done as follows.

  1. 2-3 bags of feathers are loaded into the drum. With a larger number of bags, due to the occurrence of strong vibration, there is a significant risk of feather balls forming in each auxiliary case. If the pen was moved into one large case, several towels are placed with it to evenly distribute the load.
  2. The selected cleaning agent is poured into the powder compartment of the washing machine. Moreover, the softener is excluded.
  3. Place the balls.
  4. Select a mode. It’s good if there is a “Down blanket” (“Down”) function. If missing, stop at delicate/hand wash. Best Temperature– 30°C. Higher will cause damage to the pen.
  5. The selected speed for push-ups should be no higher than 400. If there are none, better function disable. You also need to press the button labeled “Additional (intensive) rinse.”
  6. At the end of the cycle, remove the covers with feathers, place each on a separate towel and remove the moisture.

  • fill a bathtub or large basin warm water– in a smaller container, the packing will have to be cleaned in batches, which will delay the cleaning process;
  • pour in/pour in detergent (gel, fluff substance, planed soap), dissolve it thoroughly;
  • pour filler into the container;
  • leave the bird feather soaked for 3–4 hours;
  • Using a colander/sieve, remove some of the feathers, wash under the tap, and transfer to another clean container. You need to do this with all the filling;
  • drain the water, taking care to prevent clogging;
  • repeat the process for better cleaning feathers

To disinfect and give a washed feather pillow a pleasant smell, before the final stage of washing, the filler is placed for some time in water with the addition of ethers. The best esters for this purpose are ethers of lavender, orange, cypress and others with antiseptic quality.

Steam cleaning is another way to wash a feather pillow

A little-known method for caring for feather pillows. It is not necessary to have a press steamer. The device will perfectly replace an iron with steam generation or vertical steaming mode.

  1. Attach the pillow suspended.
  2. Steam the surface of the product on both sides.
  3. After a quarter of an hour, repeat the procedure.
  4. Place the pillow in the sun to dry.
  5. Flatten the stuffing with your hands, making sure it's dry.

Steam cleaning, although not like washing, will still protect and refresh your bedding. Hot air The steam generator has a detrimental effect on microorganisms, bacteria, and dust mites. At the same time, the sleep attribute gets rid of odors with steam, is cleaned of dust and is endowed with freshness.

Drying pillows

Only a competent process will remove moisture from a bird’s feather. Otherwise, fungi and pathogens may appear. Undesirable aromas will appear and the filler will begin to deteriorate.

It is better to wash feather pillows in the summer. If the air is warm enough and the humidity is low, the water will evaporate quickly, and the feather filler will dry in two days.

Choose a ventilated place for drying, avoiding direct sunlight. If this is not possible, the washed items are placed on the loggia/balcony.

If there is a need to wash items late autumn or in winter, dry with a heater or even a hairdryer.

For drying, select one of the options:

  • hanging bags filled with washed feathers on laundry twine;
  • drying the poured aggregate on the floor/table covered with cloth or clean paper to absorb moisture;
  • use for drying a washing machine, for which place the covers in the drum and select a temperature of 30°C. The inconvenience of the method is that every one and a half to two hours the feathers, collected in clumps in the bags, must be shaken by hand.

After drying, the clean feather is moved to a bedsheet, which is tightly sewn up.

What to do if the filling still falls off during washing? Fluff.

  • Place the pillow in big package made of polyethylene, insert a vacuum cleaner tube into it and wrap the joint area well with adhesive tape. First, suck the air out of the bag, and then blow it in again. Do this two or three times.
  • Place the product on the lined soft material horizontal plane and go over the sleeping attribute with a plastic beater on both sides.

If the pillow was not dried well after washing, foreign odors and unpleasant stains will appear. You'll have to wash it again.

By properly caring for your pillow, you can extend its lifespan.

  1. Whisk every day.
  2. Clean monthly with a vacuum cleaner or beat by hand.
  3. Ventilate in fresh air once every two months.
  4. If the pillow is not in use and is stored for a long time, keep it in a cover made of compacted material (not polyethylene!).

Thorough annual cleansing will allow for a long time use soft pillow, in which there are no microorganisms.
