Comfortable do-it-yourself pillow for feeding an infant. A variety of pillows for breastfeeding - reviews, patterns, DIY sewing DIY nursing pillow pattern

Pregnancy is a joyful and very important period of time in a woman’s life. As the period increases, the load on the body increases. Even choosing a comfortable position for relaxation turns out to be problematic. In this situation, experts recommend using a pregnancy pillow. And it is not at all necessary to spend large sums on its purchase. Even with minimal seamstress experience, you can sew a maternity pillow yourself using a pattern.

Being multifunctional and safe, it will become an indispensable assistant not only when carrying a baby, but also after his birth.

To make such a thing you need a minimum, including two main components - fabric and filling. Let's consider the basic requirements for them.

Maternity pillows are made from natural and high-quality fabrics. One of the main requirements is that the fabric should not cause allergies. Cotton fabrics, linen, calico are ideal.

If desired, you can use other materials for the pillowcase - fleece, velor, plush, knitwear. An excellent pillow will be made with a fur pillowcase.

If you plan to use the pillow after pregnancy (for example, when feeding a child), then it is still more advisable to use natural fabrics for the pillowcase. Moreover, in this case, the pillowcase is not sewn alone, taking into account the need for frequent washing of the product.

Filler

There are quite a lot of requirements for the filler, because the comfort of the pillow largely depends on it. It should be soft, retain its shape, hypoallergenic, easy to care for, and be suitable in terms of elasticity and rigidity.

Different fillings are used for pillows. Each of them has its own pros and cons. Let's look at the most common options.

Expanded polystyrene

Advantages:

  • easy;
  • elastic;
  • keeps its shape without sagging;
  • hypoallergenic;
  • does not absorb odors;

Flaws:

  • the balls decrease in volume over time, deflating up to 20%;
  • some women do not like the strong rustling sound of the balls;
  • It is not recommended to machine wash.

Holofiber

Advantages:

  • affordable price;
  • hypoallergenic;
  • does not absorb odors;
  • There are no mites or mold in it.

Flaws:

  • afraid of getting wet;
  • low elasticity, which excludes the use of pillows with such filling for feeding a child.

Sintepooh

In terms of its advantages and disadvantages, it practically replicates holofiber.

Buckwheat husk

Advantages:

  • environmental cleanliness;
  • hypoallergenic.

Flaws:

  • a pillow with such filling is not very light;
  • quite high price;
  • It is impossible to wash a pillow with such filling.

Before you sew a maternity pillow using the pattern yourself, you need to decide which shape of the product is right for you.

Each of them is convenient and functional, but if there is a choice, then let’s look at this issue in detail.

U-shaped and horseshoe-shaped

Good:

  • uniform support for the back and abdomen;
  • for those who like to wrap themselves in a blanket, like in a cocoon, this pillow shape is ideal;
  • no need to drag the pillow behind you when turning over in your sleep - it already covers you on both sides;
  • suitable for daytime relaxation;
  • When sewing, the maternity pillow pattern can be easily adapted to any height.

From the not so good:

  • requires a fairly wide bed;
  • With such a pillow you won’t be able to sleep in an embrace with your loved one.

Banana

From the good:

  • does not require much space;
  • supports the back and stomach well;
  • comfortable for resting on the side;
  • can be bent for a comfortable rest, half-sitting or half-lying.

There are no criticisms for this form.

The illustrations below show possible options use of such a pad.

G-shaped

A relatively new option. The main advantage is the ability to use it for relaxation during the day. The shape allows you to tuck a pillow under your head or stomach, lean your back, and relieve muscle tension.

Bagel

From the good:

  • does not require a large bed;
  • supports the body from all sides;
  • can serve as a support for the stomach, head or back.

From the not so good:

Banana

To sew a pillow for pregnant women with your own hands need to prepare:

  • fabric for a napkin;
  • pillowcase fabric;
  • threads to match the color of the fabric;
  • sewing tools;
  • filler;
  • lightning

Job Description

Let's start by drawing out the pattern.

The shape of this pillow is very simple, it resembles a banana or boomerang.

Since the product is symmetrical, it is enough to make a pattern of 1⁄2 parts. The maternity pillow pattern is shown below. If desired, you can adjust the sizes.

To work, you need to print this pattern on A4 format or redraw it on any sheet of paper. Then draw a grid of squares on the image.

Next, on a large sheet (you can use wallpaper), draw a grid of squares on an enlarged scale. To do this, we must decide what size the finished banana will be. We draw the contours of the pillow on the enlarged grid, taking into account the scale.

Cut out the prepared pattern.

Sewing

Before cutting, both pieces of fabric need to be soaked, dried and steamed. This precautionary measure will help us avoid problems due to fabric shrinkage during subsequent washes.

We mark the contours of the bedstead on the fabric and cut out the details. Using the same pattern, but adding 10 mm along the entire contour, we cut out the pillowcase. Considering large sizes product, it is more advisable to place the joining seam in the center.

We sew together the halves of the pillowcase and pillowcase, and finish the seam allowance with a blanket stitch. Iron the seam, straightening the seam allowance to the sides.

We sew a machine seam along the contour of the pillowcase and bedspread, leaving open areas on the central parts of the arches. We sew the edges of the allowance.

Sew a zipper into the pillowcase.

If desired, you can attach strings - two on each side.

Sew on each edge and every 20 cm - see photo.

The ties can be attached with a separate line or sewn in when making a contour seam. The presence of ties will help you choose the desired diameter of the pillow and its shape.

Fill the napkin with filler and manually sew up the gap left.

We put on the pillowcase and sew it up with a hidden seam open area. The banana pillow is ready!

Horseshoe

For work need to prepare:

  • fabric, preferably natural cotton of two types - for the cover and pillowcase;
  • filler;
  • lightning;
  • threads to match the color of the fabric;
  • sewing tools.

Description

Preparing the pattern for the pillow. You can use a ready-made template or draw it yourself. On outside horseshoes you need to mark the area for sewing in a zipper. The same area is used for turning and stuffing the product.

We offer you a version of a ready-made template; you can adjust the dimensions if desired.

We cut out the elements of the cover and pillowcase. Keep in mind that the dimensions of the pillowcase must be made larger than the cover. A small allowance will make it easy to put on and take off the pillowcase if necessary.

Having folded the parts of the cover and pillowcase in pairs with their right sides inward, we machine stitch along the contour. Do not forget to leave a free area.

Fill the case with filler.

Using a hand stitch, we sew down the edges of the free area.

The pregnancy pillow is almost ready.

Finally, place the pillowcase over the horseshoe and sew the edges of the free area with a blind stitch.

Do-it-yourself U-shaped pillow for pregnant women

To sew a pillow need to prepare:

  • fabric, 100% natural composition, two cuts - for the inner cover and pillowcase;
  • filler;
  • lightning;
  • sewing threads matching the tone of the fabric;
  • sewing tools.

Description

We begin work by making a pattern. You can use a ready-made template or slightly adjust it to suit your height. This type of pillow can be easily lengthened or shortened.

We cut out the pattern of the product in full size.

On the fabric for the cover, folded in half with the right side inward, we mark the outline of the product according to the template. To prevent the layers of fabric from moving relative to each other, it is recommended to pin them together.

We cut out two parts at once with an allowance of 10-15 mm.

We machine stitch along the marked lines. We process the edge of the allowance with an overlock or overlock stitch. We leave a gap in the center of the convex area for turning and stuffing.

We turn the part inside out.

Place the filling inside.

Use blind stitches to sew down the gap left.

The result is a U-shaped pillow.

We cut out the pillowcase using the same pattern, but with the addition of 1 cm throughout overall dimensions. We sew this part according to the previous algorithm. We put on the pillowcase and finally sew up the free area with a hidden seam.

U-shaped pillow with ergonomic internal profile

For sewing you need:

  • two pieces of fabric 80 by 130 cm;
  • six strips of fabric 8 by 101 cm;
  • two strips of fabric 2 by 63 cm;
  • zipper 60 – 61 cm;
  • filler;
  • threads;
  • needles, pins, scissors, sewing machine.

How to sew a pregnancy pillow

Please study the pictures below carefully. They show step by step the process of making the main part of the pillow.

Based on the same drawings, you need to make life-size basic templates for the product.

We cut out the main parts (if this is not done in advance) and fold them, trimming the edges.

Using available objects, we mark the rounding on the corners.

Fold the blanks in half. We apply the internal profile template to the fold line at a distance of 35 cm from the top edge of the product.

We pin the pattern and fabric with pins, draw the middle.

We cut out six long strips and two short ones from a contrasting material.

Cut out the middle of the pillow.

Sew along the front side the narrow edge of two long strips.

We repeat the process, obtaining three long strips with open seams.

Place the zipper on the front side of one of the short strips and attach, leaving 1 cm from the top edge.

Similarly, attach the second strip to the zipper.

Fold in the seams on the sides and press the seams along the front side.

By this stage we should have three long stripes and a zipper sewn into the short stripes.

We apply one of the long strips, wrong side up, onto the sewn zipper, trying to position it in the center. We apply the second strip on the second side. We retreat 1 cm from the edge of the zipper. We fix the position of the stripes with pins on both sides.

Sew long strips on both sides. Then we turn and iron the seams.

We cut off the excess allowance on the short strips, making it equal in width to the long ones.

Let's start assembling. Lay out on horizontal surface The main part is wrong side down and we fix it along the perimeter of the strip with pins. In this case, the zipper should be on the short solid side of the product - see photo.

Then we fasten the strip along the figured profile, grind its ends with the attached strips and machine stitch all the strips to the main part. If, when fastening the strip along the internal cutout, excess is formed, it is convenient to cut it off in the center of the profile and sew the joint.

How to sew stripes at the junction of a flat and profile line

Both edges are aligned, the strips are cut at 90 degrees at the border of the profile line, and stitched.

We sew the part with a machine seam.

Turn the pillow inside out and fill it with filling.

In conclusion, we will show a few more options for patterns of different pillows.

It is necessary to decide on purchasing a pillow for feeding your baby already in the second trimester of pregnancy, since this device will serve the expectant mother well during sleep. After all, sleep plays an important role in the health and well-being of a pregnant woman.

Features and purpose

The industry of products for pregnant and nursing mothers offers many devices to make life as easy as possible for women and preserve their health and beauty. These are special clothes and underwear, special cosmetics, bandages, slings, ergo backpacks and much more. Figuring out which of this variety is really necessary is quite difficult.

The following factors will help you understand why you need to purchase a nursing pillow before giving birth.

  1. Improving the quality of sleep in a pregnant woman. Finding a comfortable position while resting at night is a problem for many women expecting a baby. Thanks to its length, the pillow will simultaneously support the tummy and limbs of the expectant mother in a comfortable position.
  2. Unloading the pregnant spine. Already in the second trimester of pregnancy, with an increase in the volume of the abdomen, a woman experiences a strong load on the spine. This device will help eliminate the feeling of discomfort in the lower back and completely relax in a lying or sitting position.
  3. Possibility to choose an individually convenient shape. In order not to confuse your husband and other relatives after childbirth, it is better to choose a model that is convenient for you yourself. Indeed, in fact, the usual request for mothers to buy “little men”, bra pads or a bottle with an anatomical nipple, not to mention the aforementioned pillow, plunges many fathers and grandparents into horror. IN specialized stores For pregnant women and in children's departments such goods are always available. In addition, you have the opportunity to try on different shapes of pillows and choose the appropriate option.
  4. Relief during contractions. Today, maternity hospitals have a positive attitude towards all kinds of innovations that make labor a little easier. To do this, a pillow can be placed around the lower back or placed between the legs during contractions.
  5. Feeding your baby after a tiring birth. Feeding a child is a labor-intensive and often time-consuming process. A new mother will need a lot of energy to recover, so a comfortable position during breastfeeding promotes relaxation and rest. This product is suitable for use in a lying or sitting position, and is also indispensable if twins are born. This reduces the load on the hands (they do not become numb) and on the spine.

Shapes, filling, material

There are several forms of baby feeding products:

  1. horseshoe-shaped;
  2. L-shaped;
  3. long - in the form of a roller;
  4. transformer;
  5. Z-shaped.

The selection of the form is carried out exclusively taking into account the physiological parameters of the woman. For example, breastfeeding mothers with small breasts may benefit from a taller and denser pillow.

It is also necessary to understand the types of filler if you decide to create a pillow with your own hands. Classic fillers are holofiber, synthetic winterizer and fiberglass. But these materials are suitable for mothers and children with low weight. This filling is not too springy and often changes shape - it becomes flat. Again, it all comes down to individual wishes. Maybe this filler will be perfect for someone.

A pillow with polystyrene balls inside can easily change its shape and hardness. A product with such a filler has good ergonomics: it will easily take the shape of the body. But you should be careful when choosing polystyrene balls as a filler, because their size and quality of processing play an important role in the comfort and environmental friendliness of the product. Large beads may shrink over time and the pillow will lose volume. The low price of the product may indicate low-quality processing of polystyrene.

All of the above materials are environmentally friendly and easy to wash. Pillowcases are most often made from natural materials. It is best to have several removable pillowcases in your set.

Having decided on the model and filling, women often place an order on the Internet or sew such a device with their own hands.

Note for needlewomen

If the expectant mother is familiar with the basics of cutting and sewing, then sewing a pillow for herself and her baby with her own hands will not be difficult. When choosing the shape of the product, it is worth considering several points.

  1. The largest pillows that can be seen on sale are 2 m in length. Such a thing would be inappropriate in small apartment and a small room. It will take up a lot of space on the bed, so the future dad will have to sleep on the edge or in the next room.
  2. A small pillow is suitable for nursing mothers who often move or travel. With such a product it is easy to fit in any type of transport, and it will not take up much space in your luggage.
  3. The optimal length is from 170 to 190 cm. This option will not be bulky. Subsequently, you can use this item as a barrier to prevent the baby from rolling off the sofa or crawling towards things that are dangerous to him, as well as during the period when the child is learning to sit.

Before sewing this device, decide on the choice of fabric. The fabric for the bedspread, or the so-called first cover for the filler, must be dense. Satin or teak will do. And for pillowcases you can use cotton, satin, chintz, linen or calico.

It is better to choose material in calm shades, and bright parts can be attached with Velcro. If desired, you can decorate with ruffles and ribbons. In the horseshoe model, the ribbons also come in handy as ties to secure the pillow around the waist.

Pregnant women are often recommended to engage in some kind of creativity. And a thing made with your own hands, especially in such a wonderful period of life, always looks original and has a special energy. If you get a little creative, you can sew button eyes, paws and wings - then you’ll get a butterfly pillow. There can be as many options as you like: a caterpillar with multi-colored legs, a crocodile, a boa constrictor, a sunflower, etc. And you will need zippers to easily change pillowcases or add filling to the pillowcase.

Let's start sewing

To sew a bedstead, take 1.5 m of material (90–100 cm wide). Choose the pattern of the model you like. The fabric needs to be folded in half with the right side inward and the pattern attached. Taking into account an allowance of 1 cm, we transfer the pattern to the fabric. You will need 2 parts. To make the pillow look more voluminous, you also need to cut out the inner insert (1 piece). Next, you need to connect the main parts to the inside using pins or a basting stitch with your own hands. If you are going to sew a product from pieces of fabric, divide the pattern into several parts.

Mark a location for the zipper if you plan to make one. The length of the zipper is approximately 50 cm. The zipper in the napper can be useful if a pregnant needlewoman decides to use natural fillers, such as bamboo shavings and buckwheat husks, which will require periodic drying and ventilation. Then the basted napkin is sewn on a sewing machine. To sew a pillowcase, you need to follow the same steps.

Full description: a variety of pillows for breastfeeding - reviews, patterns, DIY sewing and answers to basic concerns.

Mothers of newborn babies sometimes have to hold their baby at their breast for hours. This can be very inconvenient and tiring. A nursing pillow significantly reduces stress and helps you relax and unwind.

Sewing a nursing pillow with your own hands is very simple. Even a completely inexperienced needlewoman can cope with this task.

By sewing a nursing pillow (the pattern is included), you can use it both as a pillow for pregnant women and for an older baby when he learns to sit. So the thing is multifunctional!

In addition to the pillow itself, we will also sew a pillowcase with a zipper and ties. After all, it is important that it can be easily removed and washed if necessary. The ties are needed to secure the pillow at the waist, then it will not get knocked down and you can even stand up with it. But it is not necessary to sew on the ties, it depends on your desire.

By the way, if you just need a pillow for pregnant women, it’s very easy to sew it in the shape of a roll 1.5 m long, 30 cm wide. You need to sew a bedspread and pillowcase in the same way and fill it with filling.

It's important to stock up required quantity filler. Holofiber is best suited, as it holds its shape well. But for a pillow you need a lot of it and it turns out to be a little expensive. So I took a 300 g/m synthetic padding polyester and tore it into small pieces before stuffing it. But it turns out much cheaper. For such a pillow you will need 1.5-2 m of padding polyester.

Thus, here is what we need to sew a nursing pillow with our own hands:

  • paper for a pattern (wallpaper will do, for example)
  • two types of fabric - for a bedspread and a pillowcase
  • filler
  • zipper length 50 cm
  • threads, scissors, pins, etc.

Transferring the pattern onto paper is perhaps the most labor-intensive step. Then everything will be simpler, except that sewing a zipper will be more difficult for beginners.

I offer you two types of patterns for sewing a pillow, and there is one for the bedspread and for the pillowcase, all sizes are indicated:

Nursing pillow (pattern No. 1)

Nursing pillow (pattern No. 2)

The first pattern is easier to transfer to paper, guided by the cells. Each cell corresponds to a size of 5 by 5 cm on paper. To do this, take a piece of paper of suitable size, draw it into 5x5 cm squares and draw the pattern. Cut it out. Here's what happens:

The pattern marks places for sewing in ties and a zipper on the pillowcase. Iron the fabric, fold it in half so that the fold is where it is marked on the pattern. Transfer the pattern onto the fabric. Cut, adding 1 cm allowance on all sides.

Place the pieces of the napper with the right sides facing inward and stitch, leaving an opening for stuffing. My fabric was too narrow, so I sewed a napkin from 4 parts. Fill the pillow with more filling. Sew the hole closed with a blind stitch. This is what a nursing pillow looks like:

Now let's move on to the pillowcase. It is sewn in a similar way, but still a little more complicated, since you need to sew ties and a zipper in the right places. For the zipper, leave a 50cm hole on the outside.

For the ties (if you think you need them), cut 4 strips of fabric 4 cm wide, 20 cm long. Fold them in half, iron them, right sides facing in. Sew, leaving 5 mm for seam allowances, turn inside out and iron again.

In the same way, fold the parts of the pillowcase with the right sides inward and stitch them to each other, inserting the ties in the right place, leaving an opening for the zipper. Sew in a zipper.

Ties on the finished pillowcase:

Sewing a nursing pillow is as easy as shelling pears; even beginners can handle this job. Today’s selection of lessons will help you.

Pillow for nursing (breastfeeding) and more
Odes to this pillow have already been sung, poems have been written. There are fans, i.e. enthusiastic users of this modern invention. There are opponents, or rather those who could not fully understand and apply this pillow in their lives. What does this depend on? From the shape of the pillow, from its size, from the filling, from the ability to use it... Everyone finds their own answer to these questions.
As life experience shows, such a pillow can be useful:
– for the expectant mother (pregnant woman) for sleep and relaxation;
– for feeding the baby;
– for a child when he learns to sit;
– there may be other options for using the pillow.
Sew, test and gain your experience.
You will need:
Fabric for the bedspread (cover for the filling) - teak, satin, satin jacquard or other dense fabric. With a width of 90 - 100 cm, fabric consumption is 1.5 m.
Fabric for a pillowcase - you can use chintz, calico, satin, etc. preferably natural fabrics. Consumption depends on the width of the fabric. With a width of 90 - 100 cm, you will need 1.5 m.
Pillow filling – synthetic winterizer, synthetic down, fibertek, camphorel, etc.
Zipper length 50 – 60 cm.

Making patterns.

To make it easier to make the pattern for the pillow, we cut it into 5cm squares. 30 - 40 minutes of your attention and perseverance and the pattern is ready.
If you wish, you can change it at your discretion (increase or decrease, widen, round, etc.)

Cut details:
Bed cover 2 parts with fold;
Inner cover insert 1 piece with fold;
Pillowcase 2 parts with fold;
Pillowcase inner insert 1 piece with fold;
Ties 6 cm x 40 cm (in finished form 2.5 x 38) 4 pieces.

The inner insert, which we sew along a small radius, makes the pillow more comfortable - this is an improved option. If sewing such a pillow seems difficult for you, you can skip sewing this part. This will not make the pillow lose its functionality.
The same can be said about the clasp on the pillowcase. If this is a complex knot for you, you don’t have to sew it in. Leave a section of 40 - 50 centimeters unstitched, and after the pillowcase is put on, carefully sew it by hand. In this case, please note that if you need to wash the pillowcase, you will need to rip out this seam and sew it back after washing. So maybe we can work on the fastener after all?
We sew on 4 ties so that the diameter of the pillow can be adjusted. You can limit yourself to two ties or increase their number and change their position as you wish.

As an example, we will sew a pillow from leftover fabric and scraps of padding polyester. This is how we will demonstrate that good, and most importantly very useful, things can be sewn from the materials at hand.
We use calico for the napper cover white, and for the pillowcase calico yellow and calico with a printed pattern. As a filler, we use padding polyester scraps, pre-divided by hand into small pieces, which will make it easier for us to fill the pillow evenly.
Best option– use as a filler modern materials, specifically designed for this purpose. This is Holofaytex - 100% polyester, high-quality filling made of hollow siliconized fiber, highly crimped into a spiral, formed into balls (promotes greater elasticity), used for stuffing pillows, furniture and soft toys. The filler is fibertek, a hypoallergenic, antistatic non-woven material consisting of thin hollow fibers specially treated with silicone. Thanks to this, the fibers move independently of each other, and as a result, the filler does not bunch up, does not cake, and retains its shape after washing. There are other siliconized fillers: camphor, fiberball... If you have the opportunity to purchase any of these materials, use this opportunity.

Important
: Our pillow can be washed in washing machine- automatically.

Open up breastfeeding pillows.

Fold the fabric in half. We position the patterns, taking into account the “fold” and “lobar” marks. Please note that in this product the grain thread can be located in two options (See drawing) choose the optimal one for yourself, depending on the available cut of fabric.

We outline the patterns, give seam allowances of 1 – 1.5 cm and cut them out. Be sure to place notches (a cut 0.3 - 0.5 cm long) in the places marked on the pattern and along the fold line of the parts. This will make it easier for you to connect the parts. Number of parts indicated on the patterns (two large parts, one small (inner insert), plus ties for a pillowcase). But if you are cutting from leftover fabric, you can break the pattern into several parts, not forgetting to give allowances for stitching on each cut.

This is a cover for the filler, a kind of bedstead.

Now we repeat a similar operation with the pillowcase. Ties are added here, you determine their number. Make notches on the cut details in the places where the ties are stitched according to the pattern.
If you decide to sew a pillow with a zipper, be sure to widen the seam allowance where it is sewn in. Optimal size fasteners 50 - 60 cm. Place 25 (30) cm along the outer cut of the pillowcase from the middle and make notches.
Our example uses fabric scraps. Therefore, we make large parts of the pillowcase from two parts with a seam in the middle (along the fold line), and you proceed from your capabilities and desires.

From personal experience. When a child learns to sit with the help of such a pillow, it is very interesting for him to look at the bright patterns on the pillowcase. You can sew a pillowcase from scraps of fabric especially for this period, or additionally sew on multi-colored bows, buttons, and beads. You just need to sew it all on very carefully, because... kids will definitely want to taste it all.

Sewing pillows for nursing (breastfeeding)

Sewing a cover

We connect large parts together by first chipping them with pins or sweeping them along the perimeter.
Along the outer diameter, we leave an area of approximately 20–30 cm unsewn for filling the pillow.

Place the stitching seam towards the inner insert.

Turn the cover right side out.
Fill the pillow and carefully sew up the open area.

The result is a “bagel” pillow.

Sewing pillowcases.
If you cut large parts of the pillowcase from several parts, then first grind all the parts together. Iron all seams. We check again by applying the pattern. If necessary, trim.
Let's prepare the ties. We stitch, turn, iron. You can use ready-made ribbon for ties.

And we proceed directly to the assembly. We connect the inner insert with the large part, aligning the ends of the insert with the notches on the large part and the notches in the center. Can be pre-fixed with pins or running stitch. Stitch and iron the seam towards the insert.

Clasp processing.
From the notches to the sides we grind small sections of 10 - 15 cm.

We iron the stitched sections of the seams.
We iron the allowances on the fastener, having previously swept them.

We baste the zipper.

Attach the zipper. We draw out the basting.

Fold the pillowcase face to face. We combine the notches in the middle and at the ends of the insert, secure with pins (you can sweep them away).

Don’t forget to pin the ties first, following the notches as a guide.

We sew along the perimeter, more precisely from fastener to fastener. In the areas where the ties are connected, we sew several times, carefully securing them.

Note: Regarding the sequence, you can first sew the pillowcase along the perimeter from notch to notch. Sew a zipper into the remaining open area.

Important: Since the pillowcase will have to be washed frequently, the internal seams should be basted.

Turn the pillowcase inside out and place it on the pillow.
It turns out to be such beauty.

Dreams come true! It's up to you!
Be happy.

Below you will find a video tutorial on sewing a nursing pillow.

The process of breastfeeding puts enormous physical stress on the female body. The duration of one feeding usually ranges from 20 to 40 minutes, but its frequency is influenced by the needs of the child himself. Mothers often have to be in an uncomfortable position for a long time, constantly straining their neck, arms, and back. In order to make this process less tiring and more comfortable for both the nursing mother and the newborn, there is a specially designed nursing pillow that provides maximum comfort and expands the possibilities of breastfeeding.

What types of nursing pillows are there: rules for choosing

Modern manufacturers provide consumers with a huge range of products that simplify the care of infants and make the life of mothers a little easier. Among them, a baby feeding pillow also occupies its niche. Its models come in different shapes, differ in the type of filler and the fabric from which they are sewn.

From this variety it is often quite difficult to make a choice in favor of one option or another. To make it easier for yourself in choosing which nursing pillow to choose, you should consider the following parameters when purchasing:

  • dimensions of the pillow: its dimensions should satisfy the baby and provide comfort to the mother;
  • material used for filling;
  • removable pillowcase: it should be made of natural fabrics;
  • the presence of special fasteners or ties in the model.

Varieties by shape

There are several different shape variations for nursing pillows. This:

We sew with our own hands

What you will need

You will need what any woman probably has:

  • sewing machine;
  • threads;
  • needles;
  • scissors;
  • pencil;
  • paper for patterns (any - newspapers, magazine pages, old notebooks);
  • fabric for pillow;
  • pillowcase fabric;
  • filler.

And if everything is clear with tools, then we need to talk in more detail about fabrics, and especially fillers.

Choose high-quality and natural fabrics for the pillow

Naturally, the fabric for such a pillow should be natural, not cause allergic reactions and pleasant to the touch. Therefore, choose cotton, linen or calico.

For a pillowcase you can take fleece, plush, velor, knitwear and even fur - it all depends on your imagination. If you have free time and knitting or crocheting skills, a pillowcase can be knitted. But do not forget that the threads must be of high quality and hypoallergenic.

About the filler

The comfort of a pregnancy pillow depends on the quality of the filler. It should be soft enough, but at the same time retain its shape well. In addition, you need to take into account other important criteria: hypoallergenicity, ease of care (after all, even such a large pillow will have to be washed), as well as your personal preferences for hardness and elasticity.

First of all, go to a store that sells products for pregnant women and ask the seller about how much the pillow weighs and what it is filled with. At the same time, you can choose the appropriate style. This will help you figure out how much filling you need to buy for your homemade pillow. The filler itself can be of several types:

  • polystyrene foam balls;
  • holofiber;
  • synthetic fluff;
  • buckwheat husk.

The most popular type of filler is polystyrene foam in balls (foam plastic). It holds the shape of the product perfectly and does not sag due to its elasticity. Hypoallergenic, easy to clean, environmentally friendly, repels odors. It is very important that this material does not attract bacteria, mold and mites. There is one drawback: over time, the foam decreases in volume by about 20% due to air loss. In addition, some women complain that the rustling of the balls in the pillow makes it difficult to fall asleep.

Expanded polystyrene is the most popular filling for pregnant pillows

Holofiber is soft and elastic

Synthetic down (synthetic down) is similar in almost all qualities to holofiber.

Synthetic fluff is cheaper than holofiber

Buckwheat husk is an absolutely environmentally friendly product with which you should not be afraid of allergies.. True, the pillow will turn out to be a little heavy, and such a filler is not cheap.

Buckwheat husk has long been used as a filler for mattresses and pillows.

Now that you have everything you need, you can start making the pillow.

Step-by-step instructions with photos

Classic U Shape Pillow

The main advantage of making it yourself is that you can determine the size of the pillow for your height. The provided pattern shows standard indicators. You will need two identical pieces of fabric. So, let's start our master class.

Pattern of a classic pillow for pregnant women, on the right - the fold or middle of the fabric

  1. Place the pattern on paper and cut out. Fold the fabric in half, right side inward. Connect the center of the pattern to the fold of the fabric.

    Transfer the pattern to the fabric

  2. Pin the pattern to the material, outline with a pencil or chalk.
  3. When cutting off a pattern, immediately fasten the fabric back, otherwise it will move to the side.

    Secure the fabric with pins

  4. If you felt more comfortable laying the fabric out in one layer, turn the pattern over and align the center on top. Pin and trace the pattern again.
  5. Make the second fabric piece in the same way.
  6. Put away the pattern until you sew the pillowcase. Place two pieces of fabric facing each other (the one on which the pattern is transferred lies on top) and fasten with pins.

    Fold the pieces of fabric to make 2 parts of the product

  7. Carefully cut along the drawn line, leaving a 1.5 cm seam allowance.

    Carefully cut out the pieces with seam allowances

  8. On top, along the fold, mark a section about 20 cm long. You cannot sew it yet: through this hole you will turn the pillow inside out and lay the filling.

    Leave the area at the top of the product unsewn

  9. Baste the parts along the outline line and stitch on a sewing machine. Be sure to leave an open area at the top of the piece unstitched.

    Sew the cover with a straight stitch along the entire outline, except for the hole for stuffing.

  10. Finish the edges with an overlock, zigzag or overlock stitch.

    Finish the edges

  11. Now you can turn the cover right side out. These are the “pants” you get.

    Turn the pillowcase right side out

  12. Insert the filling through the hole left at the top. Distribute it evenly. Adjust the density according to your own preferences.

    Fill the case with filler

  13. Sew the hole by hand or machine stitch.

    Sew the cover all the way

  14. As a result, you will get a pillow like this.

    Ready-made pillow for pregnant women

  15. Using the same pattern, adding 1 cm on each side, sew the pillowcase in the same way. Allowances are needed to make it easier to place the pillow inside. Leave a 50 cm long section at the top unstitched and sew a zipper there.

    Pillow in a pillowcase

Pay attention! A pregnancy pillow should be clean - this is the main rule of hygiene. It’s better to sew 2-3 pillowcases at once so that you can change and wash them as needed.

Is it really very easy and simple? Rest assured, you can easily cope with other shapes of pillows. They are sewn in the same way.

"Bagel"

This product is no more difficult to sew than the previous one. In fact, the difference is only in form. For this pillow you will need a piece of fabric 1 m X 2.20 m and the same amount for the pillowcase. Select the amount of filler according to the same principle as in the first option. In addition, you will need a zipper 40 cm long.

First of all, transfer the provided pattern onto paper. For simplicity and convenience, it is divided into squares. The size of each is 5 X 5 cm. You will need two identical parts.

Pattern for a bagel pillow, on the right - the fold or middle of the fabric

If you are of average height (150–160 cm), leave the pattern as is. For taller girls, you can add about 20 cm more by extending the fold line.

Transfer the pattern to the fabric in 2 copies, cut out. Sew the pieces right sides together, leaving a hole at the top for the filling.

Sew the pillow parts together and add filling to the desired degree of firmness.

Turn the cover right side out, stuff and sew by hand or by machine.

Sew the hole by hand or machine stitch

All that remains is to sew the pillowcase. Also transfer the pattern to the fabric, adding an additional 1–1.5 cm to the width of the pattern, cut, stitch and sew in a zipper. Place a pillowcase on your pillow and enjoy the coziness!

A bright pillowcase will lift your spirits

If you are confident in handling sewing machine and are not afraid to experiment, then the pillow can become a real toy, sweet and funny. Use multi-colored fabrics, make an appliqué, and the pillow will become a full-fledged interior detail that will be loved by all family members, including the future baby.

Give your bagel pillow a fun and funny look

Take the time to sew ribbons or fasteners to the ends of the pillow so that it can be easily rolled into a bagel playpen and secured.

"Banana"

This version of the product is extremely simple to implement. And you will need less fabric than for previous pillows.

Transfer the pattern onto paper (dimensions are given in millimeters).

Pattern of half a banana pillow, on the left - the fold or middle of the fabric

Transfer the pattern onto the fabric. Cut without forgetting the seam allowances. You will need two identical parts.

Transfer the pattern to the fabric

Sew the parts from the wrong side, leaving a 20 cm hole for the filler.

Turn the napkin right side out and fill with filling. Sew the hole left for stuffing. The banana pillow is ready! All that remains is to sew a pillowcase with a zipper using the same pattern.

A baby feeding pillow is a device that is a soft cushion. The pillow facilitates the feeding procedure, allowing a woman to get rid of pain in the back, chest and arms. In addition, the device protects the baby from accidental falls.

A special pillow makes feeding the baby easier and prevents accidental falls.

According to AKEV, main reason The early end of the lactation process is the woman’s incorrect posture when breastfeeding. It not only causes severe pain in a woman’s back, but also insufficient lactation. Discomfort makes feeding ineffective, because due to the mother’s uncomfortable position, the baby does not grasp the nipple correctly. The infant feeding roller solves these and other problems.

  1. Firmly secures the body of an infant, which prevents the child from accidentally falling.
  2. Provides close physical contact between mother and child.
  3. The baby's head is always at the right height.
  4. A woman gets rid of tension and pain in her arms, chest, back and neck.
  5. The mother's hands are freed up, which allows her to, for example, have a snack, talk on the phone or read a book while feeding.
  6. A nursing mother can change the position of her body without disturbing the baby.
  7. The cushion can be used as a bumper, placed on the edge of the bed to prevent the baby from falling.
  8. Ensures correct attachment of the baby to the breast.
  9. The accessory is convenient for use when traveling with a newborn.
  10. The pillow helps maintain the mother's correct posture.
  11. A specialized roller is necessary for twins to feed both children at the same time, which will help synchronize their biological rhythms.
  12. The product is suitable for simple gymnastic exercises for an infant, and will also be an assistant when the baby can sit (the child sits in the center of the pillow, and it supports him from the back and sides).

The nursing pillow relieves the mother's muscles, provides reliable support for the baby and is convenient during travel.

It should be emphasized once again that a woman needs to learn how to properly attach her baby to her breast. The mother should not reach down towards the baby. On the contrary, the child should be raised to the level of the mammary glands, which is where the pillow helps.

In addition, the accessory will be useful for women who have resorted to artificial feeding. Skin contact will remain between mother and baby during feeding.

How to use a nursing pillow

Using a nursing pillow incorrectly can cause harm to your baby. To make the process enjoyable for both the baby and the mother, you should know how to use a nursing pillow.

  1. Choose a comfortable place and sit down. Position the pillow correctly so that it fits around the woman's waist. Secure the roller tightly around your torso.
  2. Place the baby on his side (never on his back), facing the nipple. Experts note that this position helps avoid the development of lactostasis.
  3. The nipple should fit completely into the baby's mouth.
  4. Place the baby in such a way that the body is not curved.
  5. To prevent the baby from choking, you should slightly raise his head.
  6. Create close body contact.
  7. Secure the newborn by holding your hands or using special fasteners.
  8. Make sure that the breast does not block the baby's nose, especially at night, when the mother is less attentive.

The pillow is not used for prolonged standing feeding! When getting up with the child, you need to hold him with your hands, because the baby’s product will not hold up.

At correct use The cushion guarantees the baby's comfort and safety, even if the mother falls asleep.

Twins require specialized accessories. For example, the most comfortable pillows for feeding twins are Milk Rivers Twins.

How to choose

Specialized stores offer a large selection of nursing pillows. When choosing the best pillow, a young mother should not rely on intuition, but pay attention to following features products:

  • filler material;
  • cover material;
  • dimensions;
  • form.

Filler material

Pillows with artificial and natural fillings are widely represented on the Russian market. The cost of the product depends on the quality of the material. Latex products that are durable and easy to use are considered high-quality and expensive. These are the ones you should choose to buy.

  1. Buckwheat husk. Products made from buckwheat husks enjoy a good reputation, because they are durable. The pillow is comfortable to use because the child does not “drown” in the natural filling. However, due to the specific nature of the same filler, during feeding the pillow creates noise that can frighten the baby and distract him from feeding. Buckwheat husk filling promotes air exchange, but the product cannot be washed. The pillow should be vacuumed or shaken out.
  2. Polystyrene foam balls. Expanded polystyrene fillings are not inferior to latex products in terms of quality and ease of use. The airy material makes the pillow light and soft, comfortably enveloping the baby's body and mother's hands. Over time, the balls decrease in size, and the product loses its original appearance. Another drawback is the rustling material.
  3. Theraline. Teralin is a more modern analogue of polystyrene. The balls do not distract the baby by rustling, the filler does not lose its original shape over time and does not deteriorate. Theraline pillows are distinguished by their high cost.
  4. Polyester fibers. In addition to polystyrene, artificial nonwoven materials include fibertech, comforter, and holofiber, and these are the best fillings for pillows. The products are low cost, environmentally friendly and of good quality. The pillows follow the contours of the mother's hands and the baby's body and perfectly restore their shape. Polyester fibers are inferior in durability to latex products, so they will last one baby for a year.
  5. Sintepon and foam rubber. Pillows based on padding polyester and foam rubber are inexpensive, but it is not recommended to purchase them. Products quickly lose their original appearance, and during use they feel noticeably “springy”, which does not allow the mother to completely relax. Pillows based on padding polyester are short-lived, and foam rubber ones are even dangerous, because over time their material begins to release into environment harmful substances.

Pillows filled with teralin are the safest for babies, but they are expensive.

Besides, You should also avoid pillows based on down, feathers and wool.. All three materials can provoke allergic reactions in the baby. Wool pillows are also bad because the material quickly forms lumps, causing discomfort when used. Such products cannot be washed.

Case material

The pillow cover should be made only from natural and dense fabrics (for example, linen). The product should be washed without removing the cover. Dry the filler and cover separately.

Dimensions

Specialized stores offer pillows ranging in length from 50 cm to 2 meters. To understand which size will be optimal, the product should be tested before purchasing. When choosing, the woman’s height is taken into account. If the pillow is too low, mom will have to constantly bend over and apply extra effort while holding the baby. In such a situation, using a pillow does not make any sense.

Form

The shape of the pillow is selected taking into account the physical characteristics of the woman. If the product is not selected correctly, the mother will begin to suffer from pain in the back and arms and will not be able to feed the child well.

Woman's comfort - the most important condition for high-quality and complete feeding and lactation.

The following forms of pillows are considered the most comfortable for mother and baby:

  1. U-shaped pillows. The bolster supports the woman's back and stomach while going around her waist. U-shaped pillows are ideal for feeding twins. Mom can feed both children in a position convenient for her. In Russia, the most popular pillows are Milk Rivers and Milk Rivers Twins. Mothers of twins should not choose products designed for one baby.
  2. C-shaped. The pillow perfectly supports a woman’s back and stomach during sleep, which allows her to continue feeding her baby for a long time. Among this type of cushions, the German-made Theraline pillows are considered the most popular and comfortable to use.

You can choose the shape of the pillow based on your own preferences.

When choosing a pillow for feeding your baby, you should try it on yourself and pay attention to dense and elastic products with a non-slip surface. It is recommended to check whether the product is certified.

How to sew your own pillow

If you want to save money, you can sew a pillow yourself. Self-production roller requires a minimum of time and materials. So, to make a pillow you need following materials and tools:

  • 1.5-2.5 m dense and non-slip natural fabric(linen, calico, cotton), which will go on a pillowcase.
  • Zipper, buttons, hooks, ties, Velcro closure - your choice.
  • Filler. Select a material that is washable. The filler should not provoke the development of allergies, form lumps, or become deformed. Give preference to materials that can follow the contours of the body, but maintain elasticity (buckwheat husks, polystyrene foam fillers). Fillers based on padding polyester, fur, feathers, down, and wool should not be used.
  • Scissors, needles, threads.
  • Sewing machine.

You can make a comfortable nursing pillow yourself.

Making the product is not difficult. You need two identical pieces of fabric corresponding to the required size. Shape – U-shaped. Both parts should suit the mother’s build: for a tall woman, a high pillow will be needed.

Place both pieces next to each other and stitch along the edge with inside. For the filler, leave a hole on the rounded side. Turn the cover inside out and fill it evenly with filler. Align the edges of the hole and sew by hand.

Next, the pillowcase is cut out and sewn according to the principle described above. The hole is made wider in order to attach the fastener you like - a zipper, strings, buttons, rivets with Velcro. For the pillowcase, a natural and dense material is selected that does not shrink after washing, does not slip, is easy to wash, and does not cause skin irritation.

Pockets for napkins and other small items are sewn onto the product. Such a handmade pillow will last no less than a purchased one.

Resume

Every young mother should remember that the health and comfort of her baby depends on her own comfort. That is why the process of breastfeeding should be enjoyable for both.
