In winter, you want light, and the curtains on the window are pulled back as far as possible. And in the summer you need to hide from the scorching sun and protect the interior of the apartment from its rays. There are blinds for this. They were invented in hot countries - in India, in Spain. They do not allow the scorching light of the sun to pass through and protect the room from prying eyes. In this article we will talk about how to make them from wallpaper with your own hands.

In our climate, blinds are widely used in offices, shops, and private apartments. They are easy to buy, but there is an opportunity to save your money and make them yourself from wallpaper. Everything necessary for this is available in every home. After all, after repairs there are always unclaimed rolls left. These curtains are needed for apartment windows, balconies, and cottages. If the remaining material is not enough for all the windows, then you can buy more in stores for repairs.

Advice! Ask the seller for discounted rolls remaining after the sale. The quality is excellent and the price is much lower.

They are easy for anyone to make on their own. Everything you need for this is in any home.

First of all, you need to decide what kind of wallpaper to make the product from. They should be strong, but not too thick. You need to pay attention to their pattern so that it harmonizes in color with the curtains and furniture of the room. Interesting option, when they are made from the same wallpaper with which the room is covered.

First way

To work you need:

  • roll paper wallpaper length not less than 1500 mm;
  • scissors;
  • meter ruler and pencil;
  • cord 1.5-2 mm thick;
  • awl;
  • double-sided tape;
  • retainer;
  • decorative tape.

We measure the window. Blinds can consist of one wide strip or two narrow ones. The width of the strip should be equal to the width of the window, the length should be equal to the height of the window plus 25%.

It is more convenient to work over a large area. We cut a strip of wallpaper to the required size, lay it out on the table, and place weights at the ends so that the roll does not curl up.

The strip needs to be folded into an accordion 3-15 cm long. To make the accordion neat, you need to draw the wallpaper along a ruler. First, place dots at the selected width on both sides of the piece. Then connect them using a ruler. In childhood, many people made toys by folding paper like an accordion, so the process is clear to everyone.

We make the first folds using the edge of a ruler. Apply a ruler to the line and bend it. Using the side of the scissors or a blunt knife, we draw along the fold line so that it is clear and fixed.

When the entire accordion is ready, retreating 15 cm from both ends, use an awl to make holes through which the cord will be threaded for lowering and raising the curtains. If you are planning a wide strip for the entire window, then make more holes in the middle so that the blinds do not sag. If the curtain is narrow, then we make holes in the middle of the strip, but there is no need for holes on the sides.

The next step is to thread the cord into the holes using a large needle or hook. Its ends need to be melted, the lower edge secured in a clamp, you can buy it or cut it from an old jacket. It is needed to ensure that the curtains remain at the desired length.

At this point you can finish making them by decorating them with a satin ribbon and tying a bow from it. The bottom of the curtain will be straight and horizontal.

You can finish the blinds with a peacock tail. If a rope is threaded in the middle, then the opposite ends are connected together and glued, you get a beautiful fan.

There are windows complex shape– at the top there is a window in the form of an arch. Then they can be made in the form of a fan, like at the end of a curtain, and close the window completely. If the arch consists of two semi-arches separated wooden partition, then we make two half-fans and close each half-arch.

If there is no need to cover the entire window, but you need to shade part of the room, then make a fan of the required size and cover part of the window. We attach wallpaper blinds to the window with double-sided tape, it can withstand up to 3 kg. You can do something else homemade mount– then we glue a strip of thick cardboard to the last accordion, use nails or other fastening material.

Second way

There is another, more the hard way making curtains from wallpaper. They protect better from the sun because they are double:

  • The wallpaper must be cut into strips using a 100 mm tire.
  • The strips are twisted and glued into tubes; their number should be sufficient to cover the entire window.
  • After drying, the tubes are compressed into a flat lamella with clear ribs, and the gluing area is placed at the top in the middle.
  • The tubes are coated in the middle with glue and glued on top of each other in a high stack. To avoid glue smearing and leakage, dry glue is used.
  • After complete drying, holes are made at a distance of 15 cm. Ropes are passed through them, the lower ends of which are clamped with a clamp. Thanks to these cords, the blinds can be lowered and raised.
  • They are attached to two plastic rings and hung on nails driven into the window frame. Or simply glue it with double-sided tape.

Roller blinds: step-by-step DIY instructions

Roller blinds or roller blinds. How to make them yourself? This method is the simplest. There is no need to fold the wallpaper into an accordion, no need to pierce holes and pull the cord through them.

You need to measure a piece of wallpaper twice the length of the window plus another quarter:

  1. The cut piece is folded in half for strength, and glued at the ends with glue or double-sided tape.
  2. At the edges, pockets are folded back and stapled. Weights - wooden strips - are threaded through them.
  3. A tape measuring two lengths of the curtains is attached to the top pocket. Spreads over both sides.
  4. The blinds are glued to the window with tape. They are made the same way, you can just take different quantities tapes holding the roll. You can take one wide ribbon, strengthen it in the middle, unfold the curtain to the desired length and tie a beautiful bow. Or tie two ribbons on the sides of the roll in a bow at the same height from the window sill. Roller blinds are ready.

Master class on making blinds from newspapers

The manufacturing process of this type is the most complex and most time-consuming.

    Save

You will need:

  • newspapers;
  • beautiful cord;
  • two plastic rings;
  • rope;
  • crochet hook;
  • paints, brushes for painting newspaper tubes.

For blinds on a standard window you need to screw up to 200 newspaper tubes 400 mm long. Long tubes can be trimmed as you work.

Master class: a newspaper is wound onto a thin metal rod, usually a knitting needle is used. A piece of newspaper is wrapped around it and the edge is glued. All tubes should dry well. Then they are painted acrylic paint. It is recommended to add 3 to 1 PVA glue.

After painting and drying, the most crucial moment comes. A large number of small round tubes need to be connected into a durable fabric.

The first connection method: fasten the tubes by intertwining them with rope, making one or two knots at a time. It is advisable to lubricate each node with glue for greater strength. You need to start from the top side of the curtain. The rope should be almost twice as long as the curtain. We tie the upper end to a plastic ring. Now you need to intertwine both ends of the cord from the inside and outside.

The second option is used by those who know how to crochet at least a simple chain. This method is more reliable; the tubes are held tightly by a chain of cord and do not become untied or stretched.

At the bottom, the cord is tied into a knot; we coat it with glue for strength. Lay out the canvas on flat surface and straighten the tubes, cutting off those that are too long.

IN window frame drive in nails or special hooks. It is easy to hang the canvas on them using plastic rings. In any case, the curtains are easy to remove on a cloudy or rainy day.

In order not to completely remove the blinds, you can take a beautiful satin ribbon, fasten it on top and lower the curtains on both sides. At the bottom at the desired height, tie the ribbons into a knot and tie a beautiful bow. These homemade curtains are a variant of roller blinds.

Blinds repair

Old faded plastic, paper or wooden blinds can be restored with wallpaper. You need to choose wallpaper that will best suit the interior of the apartment, enliven and decorate it.

You will need:

  • wallpaper;
  • old blinds;
  • PVA glue;
  • scissors;
  • ruler;
  • pencil.

On old curtains we measure the width, length and number of slats. We draw the same stripes on a roll of wallpaper. We mark the locations of the holes in the old blinds so that we can make cuts later. We cut out the strips and glue them onto the old slats. At the holes we cut into three parts. We try to glue one by one without disturbing the wallpaper pattern.

We try them on the windows and admire the updated curtains.

How to make curtains-blinds from wallpaper with your own hands, other options

If there are small pieces of white wallpaper left, we recommend making curtains with your own hands using the weaving technique. This technique originated in Ukraine, and is now used everywhere. Patterns are cut out of paper. The result is paper lace that looks good on the window day and night.

To make such a paper curtain, you will need knives, scissors, a wooden mat, and patterns. On the Internet you can always find tips on this option for making blinds with your own hands from wallpaper step by step and photos of patterns for cutting. With skill, diligence, patience and accuracy, real works of art are obtained.

Another option is Roman blinds. They are usually made from fabric, but wallpaper can also be used. They require more material and more time to manufacture.

Blinds are a practical item in home decoration. They protect people and environments from the sun's harmful rays. In addition, these are not only useful, but also beautiful things in the interior.

The summer heat makes even the most resistant high temperatures people should shield themselves from the merciless rays of the sun, especially in cases where the apartment windows overlook south side. It is not always financially possible to purchase high-quality blinds for windows, and sometimes there is simply no desire to wait until they are made to specific sizes. Therefore, the question arises of how to make blinds from wallpaper, the excess of which, as a rule, remains after repairs and gathers dust in the pantry. Besides thick paper wallpaper can not only protect the room from overheating, and curtains from fading, but will also organically fit into the overall interior, especially if you use the same material that covers the walls of the room.

This method of protecting yourself from the sun will save not only a decent amount of money, but also time, as it will save you from multiple trips to the workshop.

In addition, you can notice that carefully made pleated blinds will not look disharmonious or “beggarly” at all - today some designers purposefully choose this option for protecting windows from sunlight, because such curtains are quite capable of becoming a real decoration of the room.

It is also very important that any home owner can make such paper curtains, even those who have never done needlework before. Therefore, if you have everything you need to make pleated blinds at hand, you can safely get down to business.

Manufacturing of pleated blinds

The first option and several of its variations

Before starting work, it is necessary to clear the table of everything unnecessary, since you will need a lot of space on which you can freely spread a sheet of wallpaper, at least 1500 mm long. After this, you can proceed to preparing all necessary tools, which, however, can probably be found in any home.

Illustration
So, to make blinds you will need:
- canvas, preferably paper wallpaper;
- scissors;
- meter ruler and pencil;
- a beautiful thin cord, approximately 1.5÷2 mm thick;
- awl;
- double-sided tape,
- stationery knife.
You may also need some tape to decorative design or support the canvas in a folded form, depending on the selected model of pleated blinds.
Instead of a retainer, you can use a regular clothespin that matches the color of the wallpaper, or a hair clip.
The lock is necessary to secure the blinds in the desired position.
For this purpose, a clothing accessory is used, which can most often be found on the laces of the hoods of sweatshirts or jackets.
A rope is threaded through it, it is clamped inside the clamp, and the curtain is securely held at the selected height.
The very first step is to measure the window or just the glass unit, depending on how wide the curtain is planned to be made.
Let's say the window height is 1350 mm, about a quarter is added to this value, that is, in this case, another 350 mm, which is necessary for the formation of folds.
The result is a length of 1700 mm - this is the length that wallpaper will be required.
Next, wallpaper is spread on the table, measured right size canvases.
To prevent the roll from curling, it is recommended to place a weight on its edges.
After marking the required length, it is necessary to draw a line along the square, perpendicular to the edges, along which the wallpaper is cut.
Then, the wallpaper intended for blinds needs to be marked to the size of the corrugation.
Typically the width of the fold is 20÷30 mm.
Naturally, the marks along the edges of the canvas must correspond to each other.
The canvas must be drawn using a ruler using the marking points made.
Along the marked lines it will be easier to bend the canvas into an accordion.
The first fold is best folded using the edge of a ruler.
It is laid along the drawn line, the edge of the canvas is folded and the fold of the fold is indicated, so the bend will be smooth and clear.
If the wallpaper is too thick, then use folded scissors or the blunt side of a blade to follow the drawn line, applying a ruler. table knife, with gentle pressure.
Then, to obtain a clear line, bend the first fold and draw along it with the side of a pencil or pen (naturally, so that no trace remains - the pencil must be clean).
Next, focusing on the markings and the first bend, the fold is bent in the opposite direction, according to the “accordion” principle.
Such manipulations are carried out until the entire canvas is folded into an even stack.
The resulting “accordion” is pressed on top with a ruler, which will additionally help to temporarily fix the “pleated” shape in this position.
After this, depending on the chosen model of blinds, the middle of the width of the curtain is determined, or 150 mm are retreated from the edges to pierce holes.
In the first case, one cord will be passed through the middle of the future curtain, in the second model, two cords will be passed through the canvas closer to the edges of the blinds.
At the designated points, using an awl, one hole is pierced in the middle part of the folded curtain, or two - closer to the edges.
The resulting punctures need to be slightly widened by carefully twisting the awl in them.
This will be required in order to pass ropes through them, which should move freely inside the holes made.
The next step, using a “gypsy” needle or crochet hook, is to pull a rope through the holes, the edges of which must be melted in advance, and its lower side secured in a clamp.
Moreover, below the clamp you need to leave a cord approximately 400÷500 mm long - this will be a reserve for stretching the curtains in length.
Later, its excess can be cut off, and the end can also be melted.
When the rope is pulled through the entire “accordion”, it should be secured with tape on the top fold of the curtain.
Then, a strip of double-sided tape is glued to the same part of the blinds.
The result should be a design like this.
Both the first and second curtain options can be left rectangular, tied, for example, at the bottom with ribbons.
Blinds with one cord running through the middle can be folded into a fan by slightly pulling them up and securing them with a latch.
After the “fan” is formed, its edges are glued together with double-sided tape or, if possible, with silicone using a special gun.
But in this case, it will no longer be possible to separate the glued edges.
Therefore, instead of glue, you can use a small clothespin or hair clip to fasten it, hooking it in the middle of the width of the blinds, on the side that will be turned towards the window glass.
In this case, such fixation of the “fan” will be invisible from the room, and at any moment it is possible to straighten the bottom of the blinds to make them even.
If you choose a fan-shaped bottom of the curtain, then its folds need to be beautifully and carefully straightened so that the rays of the folds converge at one point in the center.
The finished blinds are fixed to the top of the window frame using a strip of double-sided tape previously glued to them, from which the protective film is removed before fixing.

There are several more options for blinds, which you can also make yourself using wallpaper.

  • This is a simpler version of pleated blinds, for which you don’t even need to prepare and thread cords through the canvas. For such a curtain you will need a sheet of wallpaper, which is folded like an accordion in the same way as described in the table above. The blinds are also secured to the frame using double-sided tape, and their lower side in the middle is pulled up and secured with a regular clothespin or hairpin, forming a beautiful fan. If desired, foil can be glued to the wallpaper on the side facing the street, which will reflect ultraviolet rays, preventing them from heating the room.

  • If the apartment has arched windows, then wallpaper blinds can become a real decoration for them, since they are fixed along the arch in the form of an elegant fan, gathering one edge of the wallpaper bent into an “accordion”.

To do this, regular adhesive tape 15 mm wide is glued to the wallpaper, previously folded like an accordion, along one edge.

Then, the “accordion” is collected in a stack and pierced through with an awl from the side where the tape is attached. Through the resulting hole, using a gypsy needle, a cord is pulled, which will tighten the lower edge of the fan, and the tape will prevent the paper from tearing. The cord is tied in a knot on the side that will be facing the glass. Blinds made in this way will not only protect the room from the sun, but will also give the room a special charm, emphasizing the shape of the arch.

Prices for blinds

  • If the arched part of the window is divided by a vertical pillar of the frame, then for each half of it, two half-fans are made according to the principle described above. They are attached to each window sash separately, forming a whole semicircle. This method of fixing curtains on arched window looks no less interesting than the previous version.
  • If there is a need to close only top part windows, for example, to block the flow of sunlight to any specific area of the room (crib, desk, etc.), you can use wallpaper folded in the form of a fan and attached to one of the corners of the frame. This option looks quite original, both from inside the apartment and from the street.

The second option - the task is somewhat more complicated

Making the next model of curtains from paper, including wallpaper, will take much longer than regular pleated curtains. However, they look more respectable, and will also protect the room from heat much more reliably, since they consist of two layers, between which an air gap is created.

  • To make such blinds, the wallpaper must be marked and cut into strips approximately 100 mm wide.
  • The strips are rolled lengthwise into a tube, and then their edges are glued together with an overlap of 10 mm. There should be enough such tubes to cover the entire height of the window.
  • The glue should dry well, and then each tube is compressed into a flat lamella, so that clear side ribs are outlined, and the place where it is glued is in the middle of the upper side.
  • The next operation is to coat the middle line of each folded tube with a strip of 10÷12 mm with glue, and all the elements are glued together along the length. The glue should not spread, so dry glue is best - otherwise the whole effect of the lightness of such a design will be blurred.
  • All glued and stacked tubes must dry thoroughly.
  • Then, without unfolding the resulting structure, you need to retreat 150 mm from its edges. In these places, using an awl, holes are pierced and widened into which the cords are passed. They should not be visible from the outside, as they will pass inside the straightened tubes. The lower ends of the ropes are passed through clamps that will help hold the curtain in different positions. Thanks to air gaps formed in the tubes, the blinds can be completely stacked or raised to the desired height.
  • You can hang such blinds using two plastic rings tied to the upper edges of a rope. They are hung on hooks screwed into the upper slope of the window opening. In the case of plastic windows and - you can get by with double-sided tape, since such blinds are not heavy at all.

Newspaper blinds

This type of blinds can be made from any paper, including wallpaper, but most often old newspapers are used to make this type of blinds - due to the fact that they are printed on thin paper that curls easily and retains its shape.

To work, you will need a lot of newspapers, a nice thin cord, two plastic rings, screws, nails or hooks, depending on which plane the blinds will be attached to.

To make curtains of this type, measuring 900×400 mm, you will need to wind 170÷200 newspaper tubes 400 mm long. If they turn out to be a little longer, they can be trimmed upon completion of the work. Based on this proportion, you can calculate the quantity for your window opening size.

IllustrationBrief description of the operation performed
To make it easier to carry out preparatory stage work - preparing tubes, you will need a knitting needle or another fairly thin metal rod.
Its diameter will depend on how large it is planned to make these blind elements.
Having wound the newspaper onto a rod, its edge is secured with dry glue or PVA. The glue must dry well.
Having prepared required quantity tubes, they must be painted with acrylic paint, and you can use any colors - as intended in the sketch of future blinds.
It is recommended to take a coloring composition intended for facade works, as it is more water resistant.
Additionally, it is best to add PVA glue to the paint in a ratio of 3:1.
After the paint has dried, the tubes are laid out in a row and aligned.
Next, you can move on to the important stage - to fastening them together into one “canvas”.
This process can be done in two ways:
The first option is to fasten the tubes by intertwining them with rope, making one or two knots between them, or simply using the “figure eight method.”
It is best to fix the knots with glue so that they do not unravel or loosen.
Work starts from the top side of the curtain. The rope is tied to a plastic ring for curtains; its ends should be about one and a half times longer than the length of the blinds, and it is better if they are even slightly larger than they will not be enough.
Then, the two ends of the cord are intertwined, one of which runs from the outside and the other from the back of the tubes.
Second option will do for those who master the art of crocheting. Moreover, in this case, knowledge of complex patterns is not required at all - you just need to be able to weave a simple chain.
This fastening method is more reliable, as it firmly holds the tubes next to each other.
In this case, the cord does not spontaneously weaken or stretch.
If the tubes are tied in knots, then in the lower part the cord is also tied with a knot, which must be additionally secured with glue for reliability.
In order to hang blinds on a window frame, you can drive nails into it, screw in self-tapping screws or special hooks.
If the blinds turn out to be uneven at the edges, then they need to be carefully trimmed with sharp large scissors so that they do not crush the edges of the tubes.
After that finished product It is recommended to coat them with acrylic varnish, which will make the tubes more durable and give them a matte shine.
IN finished form The blinds look something like this.
If you need a smaller distance between the tubes, you can tie one knot instead of two, use the figure-of-eight weaving system or a crocheted chain.
In this photo you can see how the street is visible through the tubular blinds.
At the same time, the room is kept cool, and it is possible to have an unobstructed view of the street from the room, but at the same time, nothing will be visible from the outside.
If this type of blinds is painted in white, then in the evening the window will look as shown in the photo, that is, the opening will not stand out as a dark spot.

On a cloudy day, if you want to open the window completely, you can use two methods.

Prices for roller blinds

roller blinds

  • Firstly, blinds can be easily removed when not needed, since they are hung on the window using two rings, but you can do it in another way.
  • Secondly, it is not difficult to make a simple “regulator” for the opening height of the blinds. On the side of the window, cords 200÷250 mm long are tied to plastic rings, and another ring is attached to their lower end. Once the blinds are rolled up into a roll, the bottom ring is placed on the same nail or hook that the blinds are hung from. Instead of a cord, you can use one or two satin ribbons, which will not only support the curtain, but can also serve as a decorative decoration.

It should be noted that the same blinds can be made not only from newspapers, but also from a flat wooden rod, well-dried reeds or plastic tubes, which are fastened together in exactly the same way.

Decorating old blinds with paper wallpaper

If there are already blinds on the windows, but they have lost their attractive appearance, and you would like to purchase new ones, but there are certain difficulties with finances, then there is still a way out. Look in the storerooms - after one of the repairs there is probably a piece of wallpaper left, and you just need to put in a little effort and the appearance of the windows will be changed.

So, in order to carry out this somewhat creative process, you need to prepare:

  • Wallpaper or beautiful decorative paper.
  • Any plastic blinds.
  • Brush and PVA glue.
  • Scissors, ruler and pencil.

Having prepared everything you need, you can proceed to work:

  • First of all, the blinds need to be cleaned of dust that may accumulate on the slats during their operation. Sometimes this requires a lot of effort, but such an operation is necessary because the wallpaper will not stick well to the surface of dirty plastic.
  • Cleaned and dried blind slats need to be measured and counted.
  • Next, the wallpaper is spread on the table and marked using a ruler and pencil according to the dimensions taken from the slats. Then, the canvas is drawn onto required quantity stripes In addition, you need to mark on them the location of the holes through which the connecting threads on the blinds are passed. It is recommended that all stripes, according to the drawing, be numbered immediately so that there is no discrepancy in the ornament.
  • Then, the wallpaper is cut into marked strips, and in the places where the holes are located, cuts are made, or each of the paper overlays is cut into three parts. They will be glued to the slats between the holes for the fastening threads.
  • The next step is to carefully glue the wallpaper strips onto the slats of the blinds. If the strips protrude slightly beyond the edges of the lamellas, then after the glue has dried, the excess is carefully cut off with a sharp stationery knife. Do not trim the paper until the glue has dried, otherwise the work may be ruined.

  • So that the wallpaper coating becomes less dirty and the slats can be periodically cleaned of dust, they are covered with two to three layers acrylic varnish. Each subsequent layer is applied after the previous one has completely dried.

It should be noted that tidying up the blinds or simply making them more decorative look it is possible by gluing stained glass film on them, which today is available in the same way as wallpaper, and has quite affordable price. This material is easy to work with, and there is no additional need to purchase glue.

If you have long wanted to buy wooden wallpaper, but have not been able to because they are not cheap, you can cover ordinary plastic blinds with self-adhesive paper, which imitates the texture of wood.

To work you will need:

  • Wallpaper that matches the color, you can use the leftovers.
  • Sharp scissors. To avoid the appearance of burrs and creases.
  • An awl for making holes, which can be replaced with a nail.
  • Meter and ruler.
  • Pencil. It is not recommended to use a felt-tip pen; it leaves marks.

DIY options

Homemade blinds can be made in various ways, each of which produces a slightly different result.

Classic way

Work is performed on a free, flat surface. This is necessary in order to avoid distortions while unwinding the rolls and performing the necessary actions.

Video: Master class on making blinds from wallpaper with your own hands

Making blinds from wallpaper looks like this:

It turns out quite original item interior design, which requires a minimum of time and money.

More complicated way

There is another option where it will take more time, but the result will be more attractive.

Step-by-step making of blinds from wallpaper with your own hands:

  1. Produced preliminary marking window frame.
  2. Strips 10 cm wide are cut. All parts must be smooth, without distortions.
  3. The fragments made in this way are folded in half and glued along the cut edges. That is, you should get a flattened tube.
  4. Next is the most difficult moment: each part has a center line at the top and bottom. Thus, the strip is divided into two parts.
  5. Glue is applied to this line, and the next fragment is glued on top. Each part is glued in the center to the other, you should get an “accordion” with holes.
  6. After connecting all the elements, the product is left until completely dry.
  7. Stepping back 100–150 mm from the edge, holes are punched and cords are passed through, which are secured at the bottom with a clamp and at the top with tape.
  8. To strengthen the structure, you can use thin wooden slats, to which the upper edge of the wallpaper is glued, and a rope is passed through the holes made and rings are tied.

The operating principle of the curtain is the same as in the previous version.

Roller blind

Curtains made from wallpaper with your own hands can be rolled, but to work you will need an unwinding mechanism.

To do this, the following manipulations are performed:

  1. The dimensions of the required section of the window are determined.
  2. The resulting length is multiplied by 2 and added 25%.
  3. The required fragment is cut off, folded to length, and the edges are fixed.
  4. The upper edge is attached to a previously prepared mechanism, and at the bottom for weight they are attached decorative elements. You can use special magnets that do not allow the bottom edge to dangle.

This design must be made from quality materials higher density. Of course, this option turns out to be much more complicated and more expensive, because you will need to use a promotion mechanism.

Thus, you can perform many different manipulations with wallpaper, which allow you to achieve an interesting decorative effect.

If buying new blinds does not fit into your plans or budget, but you have one free evening and a charge of creative inspiration, then we suggest that you make your own blinds from available materials.

We made 2 step-by-step master class, how to make blinds with your own hands and 1 master class on how to update and beautifully decorate horizontal blinds.

Master class No. 1: Pleated blinds made from wallpaper

You can make these paper blinds in just a couple of hours, and if you still have wallpaper after renovation, you don’t even have to go to the store. Pleated blinds will last about a year, and then you can just make new ones, because it’s so simple, beautiful and economical. Paper blinds are also great for decorating windows. country houses and joint creativity with children.

To make blinds from wallpaper like in the photo above you will need:

  1. A roll of paper wallpaper (only paper wallpaper will do, since vinyl and non-woven wallpaper will not be able to form an accordion);
  2. Auxiliary materials: scissors or stationery cutter, ruler, pencil;
  3. An awl or a hole punch (an awl is better);
  4. A rope longer than the height of the window and 5-7 mm thick or a thin satin ribbon;
  5. Latch with end cap of a suitable color;
  6. If desired, two more tapes of any width and a length 2.5 times the height of the window. These ribbons are for decoration only;
  7. Double-sided tape (or glue) and Velcro to match the wallpaper, if you want to make curtains with a “swag” around the edge.

Instructions:

  1. First you need to cut a piece of wallpaper to the required length based on the following calculation: window height + 30 cm. Then you need to assemble the canvas into an accordion. You can do this by eye, but the pleating will be more accurate if you first line the wallpaper from the reverse side into strips 2.5-3 cm wide. A ruler will help you bend the wallpaper evenly, and a pencil or pen will help you iron and fix the folds.
  2. Now the resulting accordion of wallpaper needs to be assembled, measured and marked in the middle on the first “lamella” and a through hole made in this place using an awl. You can also use a hole punch, but then the holes will have to be made in parts and the holes will not be in the middle of the “slats”, but a little closer to the edge, but they will be more accurate and wider. Next, take the rope and pass it through the entire accordion. If the rope is synthetic, then its tip can be burned a little to make it sharp, then it will be easier to thread the rope into the holes.
  3. The end of the rope on the first upper “lamella” must be tied into a knot so that it does not slip out of the hole, and the tip itself can either be left to tie the curtains to the cornice, or cut off if you want to glue and attach the curtains directly to the window frame.
  4. At this stage, you can also glue some kind of solid base to the first lamella, for example cardboard, plastic corner or a thin rail to use to hang blinds on the windows.
  5. We put a fastener on the lower end of the rope (at the bottom of the curtains) and assemble our curtains to the desired level. Now we glue Velcro on the right and left ends of the wallpaper using glue or double-sided tape, then we glue these Velcro and... voila! We get pleated blinds with “swag”.
  6. And finally, we attach our curtains to the window.

Adviсe:

  • If you want to make horizontal blinds without swag, then you need to do through holes in two places, as shown in the picture on the right. And, of course, in this case you will need either two ropes or one long one. And to make horizontal blinds more interesting, you can decorate them with ribbons, which, moreover, will hide the ropes and fix the curtains on the right level. See the photo below for an example of such decor.

  • Instead of a fastener, you can use a button of a suitable size with two or three holes, as shown in the photo below.

  • Of course, each accordion blank can be cut to width. But, as a rule, for standard window The wallpaper is quite suitable standard width 53-55 cm. But if you need larger blinds, then you can choose wallpaper 1 m wide.

Here's a selection of photos different ideas for your inspiration.

Master class No. 2: Blinds made from newspaper tubes

If you prefer ethnic or eco-style, then you can make paper blinds from newspapers, or rather from newspaper tubes. This method will require a little more time and effort from you, but such blinds will last longer.

  • Tip: If you wish, instead of newspaper tubes, you can use wooden twigs, plastic tubes or reeds.

To make blinds from newspaper tubes you will need:

  1. For one window 1 m high, you need to prepare about 200 painted and dried newspaper tubes slightly longer than the width of the window;
  2. Auxiliary materials: scissors and PVA glue;
  3. A coil of rope to match the tubes, for example, for blinds in ethno- or eco-style, twine made of jute or simply nylon is suitable;
  4. Curtain rings (2 pcs.);
  5. If desired, a clamp with a limit switch in order to make a lifting mechanism.

How to properly twist newspaper tubes and lengthen them, watch this video tutorial from experienced craftswoman Elena Tishchenko:

And here is a useful video on how to paint newspaper tubes, also from Elena Tishchenko:

  • Tip: you can paint the tubes, simulating reed twigs, with a brown, beige, beige-olive or gray-beige stain.

Instructions:

  1. We lay out the newspaper tubes in a row on the floor and level them;
  2. We begin to tie the tubes to each other: fold a long rope in half, wrap a ring around it to attach it to the window, tie one or two knots, then tie the first tube and make 1-2 knots in the same way, take the second and repeat the steps until all the tubes are will contact you. Then we begin tying the tubes from the opposite edge, but this can also be done in parallel with the first row.

  • Tip: you can connect the tubes with a chain of air loops as shown in the photo on the right.
  1. Now we need to align the edges of the blinds. To do this, use a ruler to mark the cutting line for the newspaper twigs (along the entire curtain fabric) and carefully cut off the excess with scissors, moving from bottom to top.
  2. And finally, we begin to manufacture the lifting mechanism. To do this, you just need to tie one loop to the top and bottom edges of the curtain (in the middle), thread it through the back of the blinds and fasten the rope to the bottom loop, and then pull it through the top loop. You need to put a clamp with an end cap on the end of the rope so that by pulling the rope, you can easily lift the curtain halfway and secure it in this position.

Master class No. 3: Decor of blinds

Boring “office” plastic, bamboo or wooden blinds can be updated with your own hands and decorated specifically for color scheme and the style of the room's interior.

To decorate blinds as in the photo above you will need:

  1. Wallpaper or any colored paper;
  2. Plastic, wooden or bamboo blinds;
  3. PVA glue and brush;
  4. Scissors;
  5. Ruler, pencil.

Instructions:

  1. We measure the width, length and number of lamellas;
  2. On a roll of wallpaper we draw stripes in the same quantity and the same width and length as the lamellas;
  3. Then we mark on the markings the places of the holes into which the ropes are threaded - here the strips will need to be cut into three parts so that in the future we can bypass these places in the process of gluing the lamellas;

  1. We cut out the strips along the marked lines and, as already mentioned, cut each strip into three parts. If you need to save a picture or pattern of wallpaper, then you need to cut the paper in strict sequence, and in order not to get confused, back side you can make notes;
  2. Finally, we glue the paper strips onto the slats. It’s okay if the stripes don’t lie quite evenly; as a result, the flaws won’t be very noticeable.
