The word “oath” is one of the most powerful, because it implies absolute and unconditional loyalty to a given word. When we read the Bible, we find that oaths were quite common. This is not surprising, because in those days there were no notaries or lawyers; people largely had to take each other’s word for it. How to convince someone that you will fulfill your promise? Swear. How to convince him so that he doesn’t have even a shadow of doubt? Swear by the most precious thing you have, right? “I swear on my children”, “I swear on my health and well-being” - not everyone will easily make such an oath, especially if they intend to break it.

However, what is most precious to any believer if not the name of his GOD? The peoples who lived around the Israelites swore by the names of their gods. And this was considered the most terrible oath. When the Almighty brought the children of Jacob out of Egyptian slavery, He began to reorient their consciousness from the names of foreign gods to His name, helping them to understand that only He is the All-Powerful and True God. Re-read them again, paying attention to the fact that the words about “swear by the name” stand among other important commands:

At first reading it may seem that God is teaching people here to swear by His name, but in reality He is teaching them something completely different. The general theme of these commands is: put Me first and do everything you do, knowing that I am your Master and no one else. Unleash yourself from other people's names and cleave to My name. If you really need to swear something to someone, then do not use the names of other gods, I allow you to use My name. I just “permit”! To consolidate this knowledge, this commandment, the Lord will later say through the mouth of Joshua:

Do not associate with these (*pagan) nations that remain among you, do not remember the name of their gods, do not swear by [them] and do not serve them or worship them... (Joshua 23:7 and see Jer 5: 7)

See the same wording? “do not worship, do not serve, do not swear” – i.e. do not consider them the main thing in your life, do not consider them gods at all.

Hebrews 6:16 People swear by the supreme, and an oath to prove it ends all their dispute.

The Almighty taught His people that He is the “highest” and there is no other like Him. Therefore, if they want to swear by something “higher,” then there is nothing higher than His name.

God's people used His name to make oaths, and the Lord had no objection to this. For example, Abraham demanded the following oath from his servant: “And swear to me by the Lord, the God of heaven and the God of earth, that you will not take a wife for my son from the daughters of the Canaanites, among whom I live...” (Gen. 24:3) Or Saul took a similar oath from David: “Swear therefore to me by the Lord that you will not uproot my descendants after me, nor destroy my name in my father’s house” (1 Sam. 24:22). Even the pagan Rahab, who understood how important God was for the Israelites, took the same oath from the spies: “Swear to me by the Lord that just as I have shown mercy to you, so you will show mercy to my father’s house, and give me a sure sign...” ( Joshua 2:12)

The Lord did not object to oaths made when His name was mentioned, only until His people began to swear lies, i.e. Not only did they not fulfill the oath, but they knew from the very beginning that they would not fulfill it.

The Almighty always taught His people that if they had already uttered some kind of oath, they were obliged to fulfill it. Violation of an oath promise is on a par with such sins as fornication, homosexuality, bestiality, murder (1 Tim 1:10), and the punishment for it is severe:

Zechariah 5:3 He said to me, “This is a curse that comes upon the face of all the earth; For everyone who steals will be destroyed, as it is written on one side, and everyone who swears falsely will be destroyed, as it is written on the other side. Therefore the law prescribes:

Do not swear falsely by My name, and do not dishonor the name of your God. I am the Lord. (Lev.19:12)

If anyone makes a vow to the Lord, or swears an oath, placing a vow on his soul, then he must not break his word, but must fulfill everything that comes out of his mouth. (Numbers 30:3)

Pay special attention to the fact that there is no wording like “if anyone swears in the name of the Lord”, but simply says “if anyone swears”, because for God it does not matter whether His name was used, it is important for Him that the oath was taken at all , which means that the person who bears His name must fulfill it.

Is it easy to fulfill an oath? In order for a person to do this, it is necessary to have two main qualities: 1) loyalty to one’s own word and 2) the ability to control the situation. For example, if I, knowing how to drive a car, swear to someone that I will never drive a car in my life, I can demonstrate loyalty, but can I control the situation? After all, if circumstances develop in such a way that only I can be the person who will deliver a dying child to the hospital in some kind of car, then I will find myself in an unpleasant situation: break my oath and automatically violate the concept of fidelity, or allow the child to die. The Bible records several stories about how terrible things happened because of a thoughtless oath; read, for example, one of them in Mark 6:22-27.

When Jesus began His ministry, there was much debate among the teachers of God's people about how, what and when to swear, but there was no clear understanding that swearing is the most serious obligation that a person imposes on himself, and that God never commanded him to swear name, but simply allowed it to be done if there was such a need. Therefore, Jesus, correcting what had been distorted and obscured, explained the meaning of the commandment given in the Torah about oaths:

You have also heard what was said to the ancients: do not break your oath, but fulfill your oaths before the Lord.--- and this is correct, and this is how it should be. He went to the door and suddenly began shouting: “Saints Anthony and Theodosius! Do not order this unmerciful one to kill me and pray to the Lady Most Holy Theotokos that She will drive away from me this multitude of demons to whom I am devoted. Let them take the gold and silver: it is sealed in my cage.” And fear attacked everyone. Since then, no one was allowed to swear before that icon. They sent to Sergius's house, took a sealed vessel and found in it two thousand hryvnias of silver and two hundred hryvnias of gold: so the Lord doubled the merciful givers. Zacharias gave all the money to Abbot John so that he could use it at his own discretion, and he himself took monastic vows in the Pechersky Monastery, where he ended his life.
