Preparing the bath for restoration

Installation diagram for an acrylic bathtub.

Before installing the acrylic liner with your own hands, you need to carry out some preparatory work that will not take more than an hour time, but the final result will depend on their implementation.

The first step is to dismantle plastic panels or old tile, which is adjacent to the bathtub. This is necessary in order to gain access to all its edges. After that we start cleaning old enamel using coarse sandpaper.

After the enamel is evenly sanded, you can begin washing the bathtub. In this case, you need to carefully remove all the fragments and dirt that formed during the previous operation. At the final stage, we dismantle the siphon.

Replacing a bathtub is an expensive and problematic issue. It is much faster, cheaper and less problematic to restore a bathtub with your own hands. Restoration is the most economical way to update: without shutting off the sewer system or dismantling old bath. The service life of the coating is about 15 years - it is not surprising that the bathtub becomes dull over time, cracks and rust spots appear. But if the body is not deformed and the drain is not damaged, you can restore the bathtub without major expenses.

Eat different ways bathtub updates, here are their comparative characteristics

Restoration methods Advantages Flaws
1. Bathtub enamel affordable price material (500 rub.);

- without removing the curb to convert cosmetic repairs in capital;

— coating service life 12 years

— with poor-quality processing, the service life is reduced to 3 years;

- the enamel lays down unevenly, with smudges, diluting with solvents, we lose quality

2. Filling bath – application of enamel with liquid acrylic – new way restoration;

— 15-20 year warranty;

flat surface, no leaks;

— without removing the sides, there is no threat of damage to the tiles

- price - 1500 rub. + materials, delivery, work of the master - total up to 5000 rubles (including the region)

- capricious material and correct processing accessible only to a qualified technician

3. Acrylic insert — quick and easy installation;

available tools and materials – polyurethane foam, grinder with cutting wheel, silicone sealant;

- without dismantling the drain - you just need to remove it decorative cover;

- cheaper than a new acrylic bathtub

— the cost of the liner and a new iron bath is approximately the same;

— the liner sometimes does not match the profile (correct with foam);

— it is necessary to remove the curb, there is a danger of damaging the tiles;

Need serious preparation, glue making skills

Features of acrylic inserts

The insert has a two-layer design – ASB plastic and acrylic itself. They are made this way, firstly, due to the savings of acrylic - an expensive material, and secondly, ABS plastic, due to its high strength, strengthens the structure. The two layers have the same color and in the event of a scratch or chip, the defects are not visually visible.

Installation of the liner is less labor-intensive than other restoration methods. It is enough to study carefully step by step instructions, stock up completely available materials and tools, you can restore the bathtub with your own hands in a couple of hours.

Acrylic is not afraid of water with rust and other impurities - they are removed easily and without damage. For care, it is better to choose non-abrasive products and do not leave stains from hair dye on the surface for a long time, and do not soak heavily faded fabrics for several hours.

The metal bathtub with acrylic liner has a very low level noise. Water procedures will become more comfortable due to the low thermal conductivity of the material - the coating will be warm to the touch even without hot water. By the way, thanks to this property, water retains its original temperature for a long time.

The acrylic liner makes the bathtub not only practical, but also beautiful, fitting perfectly into any modern design bathroom, which means there is no need to plan to replace the bathroom in the future.

Please note that the liner is several times cheaper than a bathtub made of the same material; you can also save on dismantling the old bathtub, disconnecting the sewer system, and installing a new bathtub.

A rich assortment will simplify the choice; standard inserts for the two main types of bathtubs can be purchased at any plumbing store, regardless of the height of the side; You can make a bath to order or buy it on the Internet. First, you still need to get acquainted with the features of the product not in the pictures, evaluating it appearance and quality. You can visit friends who already have experience installing such a liner or check the details directly in the store. The advantages of ordering goods on the Internet are a wide range of offers, relatively low price(not due to quality, but due to saving costs on renting retail space), saving time on searching for your option.

To ensure that the liner fits your bathroom exactly, you need to take some measurements. They are very simple, and you don’t need to call a specialist for this. To accurately select a model, consultants need to know three parameters:

  • total length of the bath (including sides);
  • depth (measured using a bar, which must be installed across the bathtub in the central part and measure the distance from the bar to the bottom);
  • the internal width of the bathtub, and the distance between the sides is measured twice - at the drainage point and from the opposite edge.

Cost of a "bath in a bath"

The price of an acrylic insert depends on the size of the bathtub: for a bathtub 150 cm long in Moscow, the insert can be bought for 2500 - 4000 rubles. depending on the thickness of the coating and the manufacturer. The thinnest liner (4 mm) on the Internet costs 1400 - 1800 rubles. For bathtubs measuring 170 cm, the price will rise by 200-500 rubles. The services of an installation specialist cost 5550 – 5850 rubles. excluding replacement of the siphon, removal (if necessary) of the old coating, and travel outside the city.

To install the liner yourself, you need to purchase an additional two-component polyurethane foam, silicone sealant, new siphon. In total, you need to add another 1000 rubles.

Installation of acrylic liners

Acrylic liner is the most modern way quickly update your bath. They make custom liners of any shape and color, but you can buy ready-made ones, especially since most bathtubs are standard - 150 cm and 170 cm with slight differences in shape - oval, rectangular. Acrylic is a universal material - quite durable, retains its color for a long time, tolerates well high temperatures. It is environmentally friendly and does not require special care, but it is preferable to choose plastic care products for it.

The principle of installation of the liner is “bath in bath”. In already installed bath insert a new one, align the holes and glue it with special glue. Work for 1.5 - 2 hours, warranty subject to operating rules - 20 years.

Tools and materials required when installing the liner:

  • drill, hammer drill or chisel with hammer;
  • small grinder with cutting wheel;
  • drill with a crown attachment;
  • jigsaw;
  • sealant and polyurethane foam;
  • mounting gun;
  • clamps.

Step-by-step instructions for restoring a bathtub with an acrylic liner

You can see the entire process of installing the acrylic liner in this video.

Perhaps the method is relatively labor-intensive and expensive, but it is still cheaper than installing a new acrylic bathtub. Sufficiently durable, warm and environmentally friendly acrylic will give the bath a new life, and the owners an unprecedented level of comfort.

Installing an acrylic bathtub liner is a simple way to update an old cast-iron bathtub that is comfortable and good-quality, but has lost its former appearance due to enamel defects, yellowing and rust. Let's look into the intricacies of choosing and installing this product, which will help with minimal costs Renovate an old bathtub with your own hands.

What is an acrylic liner

An acrylic liner is a kind of insert, like a bathtub in a bathtub, the main function of which is to restore the outdated coating and cover all damage to the enamel of the old bathtub. Using such a device, you can special effort transform “ancient” plumbing fixtures into a new and modern bathtub with your own hands.

The material from which the insert is made has a snow-white surface, smooth to the touch, easy to clean and resistant to mechanical damage.

Acrylic liners are divided into 2 types depending on the manufacturing technology:

  • Molded liners. They are made from sheets of sanitary acrylic, heated in a special form. The cost of such a product is 30% of the price of a full bath.
  • Composite products. These liners have a base made of ABS plastic covered with a thin acrylic layer. They differ from cast ones in their lower price and short service life - 5–6 years.

Pay attention! If a cast acrylic liner is offered at a low price, it is either made from thin sheet, which can soon lead to rubbing or even breaking, or is made of low-quality acrylic, which has large pores and is therefore difficult to wash. Such a product will not have a white color, but a grayish or pinkish color.

Pros and cons of acrylic liner

The acrylic liner is well suited for bathtubs made of cast iron. For steel products, its use is justified only if their walls do not bend, otherwise the liner may soon crack.

It is worth considering the disadvantages of this method of restoration. Renovating old bathtubs involves the following difficulties:

  • reducing the internal space of the bath;
  • at incorrect installation the service life of the acrylic insert may be significantly reduced;
  • we have seen negative reviews about breaks and cracks, but only in cases where cheap composite products were installed;
  • the risk of water getting under the insert, and the source of which will be the resulting fungus.

We have listed the pros and cons this method, but you must make a choice: a self-leveling bathtub or an acrylic liner. Choose the most suitable method for the bathroom and the already installed font.

Liner selection

Before purchasing a liner, it is important to make sure that its dimensions are as close as possible to the dimensions of the bathtub itself. To do this you need to measure:

  • the width of the old bathing container along the upper inner edge;
  • length along the outer edges and inner along the bottom;
  • depth.

To really buy quality product in a cast iron bathtub, when choosing a liner in a store, you need to pay attention to several important points:

  1. The color of the product must be pure white, without any tints.
  2. The surface is smooth, even, without sagging or any other defects.
  3. The wall thickness should be as large as possible - 4–6 mm. The walls may bend when pressed, but only slightly. In the case of a metal bath - thin
  4. We also recommend that you carefully study the reviews for the selected product. Surely you are not the first person who is looking at this particular manufacturer.

Preparing the bath

Before installing an acrylic liner with your own hands, it is necessary to perform preparatory work, which plays a significant role in the entire process:

  • If tiles or plastic panels are tightly adjacent to the bathroom, it is necessary to dismantle them, because there must be free access to the sides of the sanitary ware.
  • The product is cleaned from the enamel coating. To do this, use a grinder with a special attachment or sandpaper with large grains. For convenience and ease of process, you can attach the sandpaper to a special holder. This step is very important because getting rid of the smooth enamel will greatly improve adhesion to the surface of the tub.
  • Wet cleaning of the internal surface is done. The bathtub must be washed very thoroughly so that no particles of enamel or other debris remain.
  • The siphon is dismantled.

If you really don’t want to bother with removing the enamel, you can simply wash the bath thoroughly detergent, degrease with soda, rubbing the surface with it, wash and dry again.

Manual installation of the liner

Installing an acrylic liner in a bathtub requires the following steps:

  • The very first step in the entire process should be fitting the liner insert into the cast iron bath and then making adjustments. To do this, you need to place the acrylic liner in the bathtub and use a marker to mark the excess part protruding beyond the old container. Take out the insert and, using electric jigsaw or a hacksaw, cut off the excess part of the material, trying to prevent the appearance of burrs.
  • It is also necessary to make holes for draining water. For this you can use electric drill with a crown attachment.

To accurately mark the drain and overflow holes, you can use the following trick: rub the edges of the holes with a construction pencil old bath and press the acrylic insert very tightly against it. The marks should be imprinted on the surface of the liner.

  • For tight installation of prepared acrylic sheet In the bathtub you will need silicone sealant and two-component polyurethane foam. First of all, you need to apply a layer of sealant to the perimeter drain holes. This is very important because it will reduce the possibility of liquid getting under the acrylic liner. Now you will need to apply sealant around the edge of the entire bathtub.
  • The whole bath with inside must be covered with two-component foam. It is important to monitor the thickness of the applied layer. This parameter must correspond to the size of the discrepancy between the size of the liner and the parameters of the bath.

It is advisable that the foam covers the entire internal area, since when gaps form, the acrylic sheet will not completely fit and sag. It is also possible to apply foam in strips at intervals of 4–5 cm.

You can repair an old or damaged bathtub in many ways: by painting, coating it with a restorative composition, or, as a last resort, replacing it entirely.

Meanwhile, there is more rational way not only resurrect the bathtub's former appearance, but give it completely new consumer qualities.

It's about installing acrylic liners in an old bathtub which has fallen into disrepair. This liner is an almost complete copy of the bathtub itself, only slightly smaller in size, which allows it to be tightly installed inside.

The acrylic insert is firmly fixed and becomes a design element metal bath , which, due to such modernization, acquires the qualities of acrylic bathtubs.

Advantages, features and benefits

Structurally, the liners consist of two layers: acrylic itself and ABS plastic. They are made two-layer for the following reasons:

  • saves expensive acrylic, which makes the liner cheaper;
  • thanks to the high strength of ABS plastic the whole structure is very durable. In addition, the plastic is selected to be similar in color to the acrylic color. This means that if you do manage to somehow break off part of the acrylic layer, the damage will be completely invisible to the eye.

Regarding advantages of this method restoration of bathtubs, then they can be distinguished so many:

  • Firstly, installation of the liner is more attractive in terms of labor costs than even simple painting. If you familiarize yourself with all the installation features in advance and stock up necessary materials, then the entire repair may well take a couple of hours.
  • Secondly, a metal bathtub with an acrylic liner is much quieter than without one. Water falling from the tap will fall on the elastic acrylic and the annoying sound will simply have nowhere to be born.
  • Thirdly, water procedures will become more pleasant due to the extremely low thermal conductivity of acrylic, i.e. The bath will become warm to the touch. In addition, acrylic will retain the heat of poured hot water, for a long time not allowing it to cool down.
  • Fourth, the appearance of bathtubs with an acrylic liner is not only good in itself, but also fits perfectly into any modern interior bathroom. Accordingly, there is no need to change the bathtub to a new one that looks more suitable.
  • Fifthly, acrylic is not afraid of water with a high concentration of iron. Therefore, if rust appears, it will only appear on the surface of the acrylic, from where, along with any other contaminants, it can be easily wiped off with a simple soft sponge.
  • Finally, the cost of an acrylic liner is several times less than new bath from this material. Moreover, additional savings are achieved by eliminating the need to dismantle the old bathtub and install a new one.

The extremely rich assortment of plumbing stores makes it easier to buy an acrylic liner. You can buy an insert almost everywhere both for bathtubs 150 cm and for models 170 cm long.

In this case, the internal shape of the liner can also be either ellipsoidal or straight, which allows you to select the right option absolutely for any metal bathtub With different heights sides

Prices

Acrylic liner cost directly depends on the size of the bath for which it is purchased. If it's a short bath length 150 cm, then in Moscow an insert for it will cost from 2600 to 4000 rubles, depending on the manufacturer. For baths length 170 cm prices will be higher by 200-500 rubles.

In addition, for self-installation liner will be required and additional materials : silicone sealant, two-component polyurethane foam and new system plum, that in total will not cost more than a thousand rubles.

Buy acrylic liner there are two ways: or purchase in a traditional plumbing store, or use the services online store.

Purchase in a regular store interesting because what will happen in this case it is possible to evaluate the appearance and quality Acrylic with my own eyes and fingers. However prices in such stores will be quite high.

Where the purchase option looks more attractive acrylic liner in the online store. First of all, in a few minutes and without getting up from your chair, you will have the opportunity to get acquainted with the offer very large number Moscow plumbing stores.

The next pleasant moment - prices. In any online store they will always be much lower than in traditional retail outlets.

Moreover, the cheapness is explained not by the poor quality of the inserts offered, but by the peculiarities of online trading itself.

Such sellers most often do not incur significant expenses for the maintenance of retail space, rent inexpensive premises, and due to the resulting savings, they are able to set low price tags.

The optimal sequence of actions when purchasing an acrylic liner in an online store can be considered the following:

  1. Find time and go to a regular store just see what the acrylic liner is like, evaluate its appearance and quality of finish.

    More best optionvisit someone you know, who have already installed a similar liner. At the same time, you can find out the details and installation features, and also see what it looks like ready-made solution in a real interior.

  2. Order an acrylic liner in the online store the model you are interested in and wait for it to be delivered. At the same time, delivery within Moscow in the vast majority of online stores will be free. For the region, the cost of services must be found out directly on the seller’s website.

In addition, even before the stage of direct selection one or another model of bath liner, you will need to make some measurements. You will need three of these measurements:

This information will be needed by store consultants to accurately select the insert of the required size.

Advantages in reviews

Dry listing of the advantages of acrylic liners cannot give a complete picture all the benefits that their owners acquire.

Best read people's reviews who have already installed the liners and have the opportunity to give an objective assessment of their choice.

For example, it is interesting review from girl Zhenya Kazan, who was faced with the need for cosmetic repairs throughout the entire apartment, but did not have enough free money at that time.

She says she purchased an acrylic liner for her old cast-iron bathtub and ended up with a high-quality acrylic bathtub that looked exactly like it. Her small child never ceases to enjoy the warmth and comfort while bathing.

Andrey from Saratov writes that he was also limited in funds, and the old bathtub had fallen into almost complete disrepair. He notes with pleasure that even his initial skills home handyman It was quite enough for self-installation of the liner. Now the whole family has the opportunity to take baths with previously unattainable comfort.

Moskvich Anton shared his impressions of purchasing an acrylic liner in an online store.

According to him, the liner was much cheaper than what he saw in a nearby plumbing store. Plus, he used the services of an online consultant, finding out all the installation features of the liner model he was interested in. The information received was enough for him to quickly cope with the installation himself and now continues to enjoy the new appearance of the bathtub.

And quite it makes sense to trust reviews posted on the Internet.

The psychology of people is such that they will not say a single word of approval if something does not suit them. For now, you can only find online responses positive emotions, mastered by those who purchased and installed an acrylic liner in the bathtub.

How to install it yourself?

Before starting installation, you will need to acquire the following set of tools:

  • chisel with hammer, or impact drill or hammer drill;
  • sandpaper and grinder;
  • drill with a crown attachment;
  • jigsaw, its electric version;
  • mounting gun for foam and sealant;
  • sealant and polyurethane foam;
  • clamps.

First of all you should prepare the old bathtub to install the liner in it.

To do this, use a hammer drill gets lost old tiles , adjacent to the bathtub, from the sides all skirting boards are removed and other fixtures, including a drain and overflow system.

As a result, you need to get clean and free from foreign objects sides of the bathtub.

Then sand with a grinder the entire inner surface of the bathtub is treated.

This is done to eliminate any remaining gloss so that the adhesion to the polyurethane foam is as strong and uniform as possible.

Now the acrylic liner needs to be placed inside the bathtub and on it back side draw the boundaries of the sides and drain. Next, follow the resulting markings with a jigsaw excess is cut off.

Using a drill with a 54 mm diameter bit in the previously marked areas holes are cut for drainage and overflow.

The next stage of bathtub renovation is directly installation of the liner. It begins by applying a continuous layer of sealant around the drain and overflow holes. It is extremely undesirable to save money here; this layer should be at least several centimeters wide and as uniform as possible.

Further on the side of the bathtub, as well as throughout inner surface a continuous layer of polyurethane foam is applied.

In this case, it should be used exclusively two-component polyurethane foam, which does not shrink as it hardens.

After this you need take a short break necessary for the foam to achieve the required properties. The time of this pause can be found on the foam container.

Finally, you can finally install acrylic liner in bathtub. Follows immediately screw on the drain and overflow system. This will help secure the liner more tightly while the foam hardens and improve the adhesion of the liner to it.

Additional fixation can be achieved by evenly tightening small clamps around the perimeter of the side.

To prevent the metal of the clamps from damaging the acrylic surface, it is recommended Place either pieces of plastic or thin pieces of plastic at the contact points wooden slats .

Having completed all the work, the bathtub should be filled cold water and leave her like that for a period of at least one day.

During this time, the sealant will completely dry and the polyurethane foam will finally harden. The bath is now ready for use.

The technology for installing an acrylic liner in a bathtub is a completely reasonable solution and great alternative expensive replacement.

Absolutely solid, warm and at the same time great-looking acrylic will give an old bathtub a new life, and its owners - an unprecedented level of comfort. Moreover The service life of acrylic liners can reach 10 years or more, it is enough just to protect them from exposure to chemically aggressive substances and abrasive cleaning agents.

We invite you to watch a video on how to install an acrylic liner in a cast iron bathtub:

One of the most effective ways to restore bathtubs is to install acrylic liners in the bathtub. This method allows you to quickly restore the inner surface of the bathtub and return it to its original appearance.

At the same time, this method of restoration has many advantages - from saving time to the possibility of self-installation.

Benefits of a "bath in a bath"

Installing an acrylic liner in a bathtub is a bathtub restoration technology that appeared relatively recently, but has already become quite popular. It is gradually replacing more traditional methods - enameling and so-called “fill-in baths”.

Why did masters like bath liners so much?

  • Firstly, installation of the liner in the bathtub is carried out quite quickly. The installation procedure itself takes about two to three hours (including full cycle preparatory work). In this case, you can use the bath for its intended purpose within a day.
  • Secondly, restoration of the bathtub by installing a liner can be done with your own hands– and in this case the probability of success is much higher than when trying to update the enamel yourself.
    So if you are faced with a choice between a liner bathtub or a free-flowing bathtub, feel free to choose the first option.

Thus, installing an acrylic liner in a bathtub can be safely considered as a priority option for restoration work.

Pay attention!

Mostly cast iron bathtubs can be restored in this way.

The whole point is that steel baths Most of the buildings from the USSR era are already out of order, and the small part of them that is still in use is in a state that does not allow any restoration.

But cast iron baths have an almost inexhaustible resource of hull strength.

Below we will tell you how to install an acrylic liner in a bathroom: video instructions and a detailed algorithm will be useful to you if you decide to do the restoration yourself.

Selecting an Acrylic Liner

When installing an acrylic liner in a cast iron bathtub, it is very important correct selection the insert itself. Ultimately, the further use of the restored bathtub depends on how correctly you choose the liner.

Most of the bathtubs that were installed in our homes during the Soviet era have a fairly unified shape and size. That is why the process of selecting a liner for such baths is quite simple - you need to measure the dimensions of the bath (length, width and height) and select the liner based on them.

Bathtub measurement

Pay attention!

Width and depth are measured along the inner walls of the bathtub in its upper part, and depth - in the deepest place, in the area of the lower hole for draining water.

Having the parameters of the future liner, choosing a specific model is quite easy: this can be done in any online store, and consultants from construction supermarkets will be happy to help you with this.

Measurement locations

Also, if you are going to install an acrylic liner in a cast-iron bathtub, do not forget to purchase special polyurethane foam - the usual construction foam will not work. You can do this in the same place where you buy it yourself.

Preparing the bath for installation

Before installing the liner in the bathtub with your own hands, it is necessary to carry out a set of preparatory work. As a rule, preparation does not take even an hour, but the final result largely depends on the quality of preparation.

The old bathtub is prepared for installation of an acrylic liner according to the following scheme:

  • To begin with, we dismantle the tiles or plastic panels adjacent to the bathtub. This must be done in order to gain access to the edges of the bath along its entire perimeter.
  • Then we start cleaning the old enamel. To do this, we use coarse-grained sandpaper, which, for convenience, can be fixed on a wooden or plastic holder.
    This is done in order to ensure adhesion to the surface - and almost glossy enamel greatly prevents this.
  • After the bathtub enamel has been sanded fairly evenly (there should be no large unscratched areas left), we proceed to washing the bathtub. In this case, it is necessary to carefully remove all dirt and debris formed during the previous operation.
  • Only after the bathtub is washed do we dismantle the siphon.

All! We are ready to install an acrylic liner in a cast iron bathtub.

Installing a bathtub liner

After the bathtub is properly prepared, you can install the acrylic bathtub liner - the following tips will help you install it correctly:

  • The first stage of installing a liner in a bathroom is fitting. We place the liner in the bathtub, use a marker to mark the protrusion of the acrylic sheet over the edge of the bathtub, and then remove the liner.
    Using a jigsaw, cut off the excess acrylic around the perimeter of the removed liner.

Adjusting the liner to size

  • We mark the drain and overflow holes from the inside - and cut them in the same way using a drill with a special crown attachment.

Pay attention!

In order to mark the location of the holes as accurately as possible, we rub them with a simple pencil and press the liner tightly to the drainage points.

Marks on outside liner and will serve as guides when cutting holes.

Drilling a hole

A fitted liner can be installed in a cast iron bathtub using special foam and sealant.

To do this:

  • Apply sealant around the perimeter of the drain and overflow holes. This is done to ensure tightness and reduce the likelihood of leaks.
  • We also apply sealant around the perimeter of the bathtub from the very edge - this is where the liner in the cast-iron bathtub should be most tightly in contact with the bathtub itself.
  • Next, cover the inner surface of the bathtub with foam. The foam must be applied in a continuous layer, without breaks or voids - otherwise in such places the liner will sag under your weight or under the weight of a layer of water.
    The volume of foam (layer thickness) depends on how closely the configuration of the acrylic liner matches the configuration of the bathtub.

Foam application

  • After the foam and sealant have been applied, we install the liner itself in place. We press the installed liner as tightly as possible to the bathtub.
  • The liner can be secured around the perimeter with clamps, placing boards or wooden slats under them to avoid damage to the acrylic.
  • Immediately after installing the liner, install a siphon - this will reliably seal the water overflow areas.
  • We close the drain with a stopper and fill the bath with water. The water level should be 2-3 centimeters below the overflow hole.
    In this case, water plays the role of a cargo that provides reliable fixation liner and foam polymerization.

Filling the bathtub with water

In this state, the bathtub with the liner should stand for about a day, after which it can be used as usual.

Even a non-professional can do this technology. The main thing is to follow the instructions exactly and use specially designed materials (namely, polyurethane foam).

Therefore, if you are seriously thinking about it, feel free to choose an acrylic liner in the bathroom as a restoration method - its installation is so simple that you can handle it even without being a complete novice in plumbing!
