How to make patterns yourself

If you have difficulty finding patterns for work, you can make patterns for dog clothes with your own hands. The ideal pattern is one that is made to individual sizes and takes into account all the features of the figure. Most often, owners make patterns themselves for small dogs.

First of all, you need to take measurements. The main measurement is the length of the back. For accuracy, you should put on a collar and from it calculate the distance to the base of the tail. The resulting number must be divided by eight, thereby obtaining the length of the side of the square on the pattern.

To make a jumpsuit, you need to cut out two parts. The first part is the main part of the overalls, consisting of the left and right sides, the second part is the wedge. The width and length of the legs are adjusted during the first fitting and adjusted to the specific dog. To keep the dog warm, the legs at the bottom are gathered with elastic. Based on such a pattern, you can sew an excellent thing.

Overalls pattern

TECHNOLOGY:

1. Measure the length of the dog’s back (from the collar to the root of the tail) - points (Z-K);
2. Divide this length by 8 (example: 40 cm: 8 = 5 cm) - we get the side of one cell in cm (mm);
3. Draw a sheet of paper into cells with the corresponding side, according to the diagram;
4. Mark “control points (crosses);
5. Connect them together;
6. We cut out two such parts (M-F-Z-K-D-I-L-G-B-N); Attention! On the top side of the overalls (Z-A-B-K) add 3 cm.
7. Next, we cut out two parts - (F-B-N-M) and two parts - (G-D-I-L). These will be the inside of the trouser legs. We sew each of the halves of the pattern with the inner sides of the trouser legs;
8. Next, measure the volume of the chest - (B-D) and the volume of the "waist" - (A-B);
9. Subtract the difference in these places between the real volumes of the dog and the flat image;
10. This difference is the width of the insert on the belly (between the two halves of the overalls)

11. Assembling the overalls into a single whole. We grind the insert in several steps:

a. We start with the neck. We extend it to the armpit (the end of the front leg) and, having secured it, break the thread.
b. We begin to sew the “underbelly”, add it to the groin (the beginning of the back leg), fasten and break the thread.
c. We begin to stitch the insert to the back leg to its middle (for bitches).

d. For male dogs, cut out the fly on the insert. The insert itself is longer than for bitches. Sewn from the neck to the tail hole (D-G-B-G). A dart is made on the belly side to ensure a tight fit of the overalls on the belly. The fly is finished with bias tape. (You can insert an elastic band, but it will be more rough. If you insert an elastic band, you do not need to make a dart).
12. Sew in a zipper. It can be detachable, or it can be one-piece.
13. Next, we trim the tail part of the overalls with bias tape, having previously made darts according to the figure, or you can do it without darts - with an elastic band inserted inside the tape.
14. We finish the neck part like the tail part. You can do a stand. On one side we make a loop, on the other we sew a button. You can sew on Velcro or insert a tie cord.
15. We hem the trouser legs according to the dog’s height. We insert the elastic bands down. Attention! There should be a slight slouch at the bottom of the shalwar style pants to allow the dog to move comfortably!
16. The overalls are ready.

A small dog cannot do without its own wardrobe. And if decorative costumes can be dispensed with, the presence of functional clothing has already turned from a whim of the owners into a mandatory element of keeping an animal. Functional clothing includes items intended for autumn and winter walks, safety shoes, and sanitary panties for use at home.

Walking clothes are made from easy-to-care, washable fabrics. Autumn options are single-layer, designed to protect wool from dirt and slush. Winter clothes have an additional insulating layer and are in high demand among owners of smooth-haired and small breeds.

Pattern construction options:

Simple blanket

You will need to measure the length of the back from the neck to the tail (segment AB on the pattern) and the circumference of the neck (segment BAB). The “back” part can consist of two parts or be one-piece. In the second case, the fabric is folded in half and the segment AB lies on the fold line. Don't forget to leave a seam allowance for each piece.

Connect the collar and back along the BAB line. Points of the same name on different parts must coincide. Sew the collar into a ring and sew a belt to the bottom edge. The T-shaped part of the belt should cover the dog's back and secure the blanket. At point B you can sew a loop for the tail. If the belt is cut wider, it will cover more of the abdomen. You can sew an insulated lining to the back of the blanket.

Knitted blanket

The numbers indicate:

1 - neck circumference;

2 - back length from neck to tail;

3 — distance from the neck to the elbow joint;

4 - width of the belt on the stomach, depending on desire;

5 - 2/3 of the neck circumference;

6 - 2/3 of the chest circumference;

7 - 7+9 = 1/3 of the chest circumference plus 2-5 cm;

8 - collar width, depending on desire.

Knitting starts from the collar. The number of loops in 1 cm is 2-3.

The collar is knitted in the round to the desired length, then a third of the loops are closed.

Continue knitting the back with the fabric, adding every second row one loop from each edge. When the width of the fabric reaches size 6, continue to knit without crochets. 8-15 cm before the bottom, start removing the outer loops, knitting two of them from each edge. Parts 7 and 9 are knitted separately; the location of the fastener depends on their length.

Vest

The main measurements are the length of the back from the neck to the tail and the circumference of the chest behind the elbow joint. The length of the back must be divided by 10, the result will be the side of the square on the scale grid. Draw a grid and transfer the pattern onto it, adding seam allowances.

In this vest, the belly part will be one-piece, and the back will have a fastener along the entire length. If you want to make a vest with a lining, you will need to cut out a second set of parts from a suitable fabric.

Connect the lining pieces to similar front pieces and baste them. Sew in a zipper or design another fastener. Next, sew the back and belly pieces together so that the same letters match each other. Finish the collar and armhole.

You can cut out a collar and small sleeves from knitted fabric or knit them with an elastic band, then sew them to the vest.

Place the toe with the heel facing up. Mark the places for the holes for the paws, taking into account that the heel will be on the puppy's chest. Before cutting holes, sew future cuts with a needle-forward or over-the-edge stitch. Crochet the sleeves and legs, finish and cut a hole for the tail and genitals.

T-shirt outfit

The easiest way to sew it is from a children's T-shirt. From the collar of the T-shirt down, mark the length of your dog's back. Please note that the bottom of the back should be cut along the convex blue line, and the bottom of the belly along the concave red line. The widest part of the pattern corresponds to the circumference of the chest behind the elbow joint. Carefully trim the edges and baste the side seams to point B. This is especially important for a small dog, since during a walk their paws often get cold, and they often arrive dirty. Today we’ll figure out how to create a pattern with your own hands. Or you can download a ready-made one if you don’t want to bother with the construction.

But before we begin to understand this issue in more detail, Let's look at the main types of overalls:

Overalls made of waterproof materials. This one is best sewn from bologna fabric. An excellent option for winter overalls, especially for Yorkies;

Any tailoring begins with creating a pattern. So, let's begin:

First of all, it is necessary to take measurements from the animal. The first of these will be the length of the back - the distance from the neck to the tail. To make it more convenient to take measurements, it is recommended to put a collar on the dog, then it will be clear and understandable where to start.
We build a grid for construction. So, the resulting measurement must be divided by 8. The resulting number will be the side of the grid square.
From the picture below, we transfer the pattern strictly according to the squares.
Cut it out of paper. We apply it to a piece of fabric and trace as many details as necessary for sewing. We cut the edges strictly along an oblique line. Also, do not forget to leave one centimeter for processing the seams.
You should get nine parts and a belt, which is necessary for the model with a drawstring. We cut them out.
Using temporary seams, we sew the parts with the following sides: CO with C1O1, XY with X1Y1, DP with D1P1, E1D1 with E2D2 (start with E1).
In the same way, we sew the paired parts together with temporary seams.
We do the first fitting and, if necessary, adjust the product to the animal’s figure.
If you are making a jumpsuit with a belt, then you need to sew a drawstring to it.
All temporary seams must be machine stitched. Sleeves and trouser legs too. Next, we insert elastic bands into the legs, just make sure that they do not squeeze the paws too much.
We process the neck, but the tail part needs to be processed with edging, and only then insert the elastic band.
Then you need to sew on the flaps to fasten the overalls. For this it is better to buy Velcro fasteners. Unlike other types of fasteners, it ensures a better fit of the product itself on the dog.

The overalls are ready. You can decorate it with pockets or, for example, insert laces so that you can adjust the size of the product. Here it’s up to you to decide what your imagination is enough for. Good luck.

Outfit with a hood

In this section we will look at how to sew a dog costume with a hood. We will sew in the same way as described above. There is only one nuance in which we sew a tailored hood of a comfortable cut to the neck part.

For convenience, it is necessary to make it small.

Let's look at the main points when sewing this component of the costume:

The pattern is presented below. So, cut it out of paper. Apply to the fabric and trace. Cut out all the details;
We place the visor parts face to face and machine stitch them;
We turn the product inside out and process the part with an edge-to-edge seam along the curved side;

For large pets

Before you start sewing, you need to decide on the fabric.

For large dogs, it is best to use bologna, as it washes well and dries quickly.

Below is a pattern that you can use to sew a costume for your pet. Moreover, you can sew all three types of overalls.

So, first, let's take measurements:

Measure A - length from neck to tail;
Measurement B - length from the neck to the hand of the front paw;
Measure C - length from the neck to the hand of the hind paw;
Measure D - neck circumference.

This concludes the taking of measurements. The pattern has angles a and b, they need to be made obtuse, this is about 135 degrees, maybe less, but not much. Thanks to them, your pet will be able to move around calmly.

After taking measurements, you need to create a pattern. Then cut it out and trace it onto the fabric. We cut out two identical parts from the material from which you will sew. We sew them together, just remember to leave the paws, neck and tail unsewn. We process all seams with bias tape, if necessary, insert elastic bands.

My experiment is a story about how I sewed a jumpsuit for a dog with my own hands - for my little Beads,
but first I’ll tell you a little backstory.
One friend gave my eldest Chinese Crested dog Lyalechka a ready-made light jumpsuit, purchased at a pet store.
Or rather, she had to do it, because... She bought it for her boy, the Pomeranian Lukas, but didn’t notice that there was no hole for a weenie.
She didn’t bother cutting out a hole for the most important “male” organ, but simply gave it to us.
Well, it will be useful for us on the farm; who would refuse something free?
Lyalechka has enough clothes, fully packed, there are suits, coats, hats, shoes, etc., but an extra supply won’t hurt, especially since this gift was just right for her, very comfortable, spacious and cute.
But I also have a youngest, little Businka. So that’s it for Lyala, but she doesn’t have such a thing, and I rushed to “Cat House” to buy a similar “product.”
And there - well, they were just waiting for us - there was a huge choice, but not about us.
I sat and thought about it, well, I’m completely armless, after all, it’s not the gods who burn the pots, and I went online, typed in a homemade dog jumpsuit into a search engine, and began looking for information.
The trouble is that I don’t understand much about patterns, as they say, but I really wanted to try.
I searched through a lot of websites, visited forums, looked at countless different patterns, and everywhere it was the same: “You need one single measurement - the length of your back from the neck to the tail.”
What next?
It's a state secret, no one reveals secrets. Finally, a pattern caught my eye that looked a lot like a jumpsuit,
but I didn’t know what to do with her next.
As always, my best friend, a cutter and seamstress from God, came to the rescue.
Firstly: she scratched the bottom of the barrel and gave us from the “master’s shoulder” an antediluvian raincoat and jacket, which had to be ripped open and smoothed out:

And secondly: she gave me homework to construct this pattern on paper specifically for Bead.
The length of my pet’s back from neck to tail is 30 cm, and 30 divided by 8 is 3.8 cm.
Therefore, the side of the grid square where the pattern will then be located will be equal to 3.8 cm.

And we accurately transfer the pattern into squares, and then cut it out:

Having completed all the instructions and collected all my belongings, I went with little Businka to gain my wits with my friend.
I want to warn you in advance that in this master class I will tell you everything in detail, step by step, how to create a jumpsuit for a dog with your own hands.

Transfer the pattern to paper or a piece of wallpaper:

The pattern immediately shows that the length of the legs is too big for the paws - Businka has not grown up to a long-legged model for the catwalk, so we measure the length of the front and back legs from the armpit and mark them with a red marker, and round off the sharp corners between the legs with a smooth line:

And now we need to cut out a bar - the middle (vesticle), to which the trouser legs will subsequently be sewn.
To do this, transfer the working pattern onto paper and measure the length below from the neck, along the legs to the butt - for Businka it is -52 cm:

We measure the width of the bar between the armpits from one paw to the other. For us it is 15 cm between the front paws and 13 cm between the hind paws, plus 3 cm for the seams and loose fit, so we get 18 and 16 cm respectively (I want to warn you in advance that the bar will have to be adjusted, because .all dogs are different):

All the paper parts are ready, now I strongly recommend trying the cut on an old tablecloth or sheet:

And we sew our trial version of the overalls on a machine:

It turned out that the bar, although calculated correctly, turned out to be too big, so we removed 2.5 cm directly along the product.

We draw a line from the armpit of the front paw to the butt and immediately transfer the changed size to the pattern:

It turned out that when laying out the pattern on the fabric, there was a little bit of material missing for the legs, but don’t be upset - you just need to tuck the legs on the pattern and then cut it as it turns out, and not as you want:

The children have a Chinese Crested dog. It's very cold. When the question of insulation arose, we were horrified by the prices of overalls in stores. We decided to sew ourselves. We reviewed a lot of patterns. We settled on yours. But when we sewed a test version from a sheet, it turned out about the same as in your photo. Large in volume.

Since the dog is long-legged, there were no problems with the length of the trouser legs. We started looking for other patterns. The result is the same. We decided to create a pattern based on individual measurements. And so, reading the description of the construction of the pattern on one of the sites, I realized where the mistake was made - when constructing, measurements were taken of 1/2 of the chest circumference and 1/2 of the waist circumference, but it is necessary to take these measurements only to the armpits. Then, when you sew the chest panel to the two main side pieces, everything will be perfect.

To make it clearer, I’ll explain with an example: our dog has a full chest girth of 40 cm. Half of the girth is set aside on the pattern - 20 cm. And if we add here the width of the chest insert of 7-8 cm. So we get 48 centimeters instead of 40 cm. When we take the measurement from armpit to armpit across the back, and for us it is 34 cm, divide it in half and put it on the pattern, then after sewing in an insert 7-8 centimeters wide, we get 41-42 centimeters in volume along the chest. We have 1-2 centimeters of freedom of fit. By the way, the width of the insert must also be cut according to individual measurements, since the width of the breast is different for different breeds. We measure the width of the breast between the collarbones (protruding bones on the breast). I really hope that my experience will be useful to someone.

Now we will talk about our smaller brothers - dogs and clothes for them. None of the dog lovers will argue that clothing for them in the city has become simply necessary. After all, our pets are no longer the same descendants of wolves, they are accustomed to the warmth and dryness of apartments, and besides, these reagents are used to treat roads from ice...Today I suggest you create a pattern for the basis of overalls for a dog according to the pet’s individual sizes, with the ability to subsequently model this basis and create various models and cuts.

Next, let's start drawing out the belly line of the overalls. We divide the segment PN, along the line of the back, in half with point M. From point M, lower the perpendicular MF1 = (Ot-Shpl)/2 We connect the points LV1. From point Z we draw a straight line parallel to CH and extend it left and right, see fig. We divide the segment ZhZh1 in half by a perpendicular lowered onto the straight line Zh. We connect the point obtained when the perpendicular intersects the straight line with t.Zh and t.Zh1

We will determine the width of the panties at the bottom of the front paw for each of us according to this scheme: Wrist girth of the front paw + freedom allowance (at your discretion, from 4-6 cm depends on the fabric and processing method, for example with an elastic band) ZZ 1 = 1/2 the width of the pants at the bottom (Ozap + allowance)/2. For a better fit of the overalls and ease of movement, you need to design a dart. To do this, from the line drawn from T.Zh, up along straight line G, we will set aside a tuck solution of 3 cm. Its depth is calculated by the formula 3 * solution size, i.e. = 9 cm. the tuck solution, when processed, will shorten the length of the trouser leg; we must make up for it, extending it by 3 cm, in the area from point Z1 down. We design the bottom with a smooth curve, see fig.

From t. H down to the floor line we lower the perpendicular HH1. We divide the NM in half, and connect the resulting point to M1. Н1М1 = measurement Height from the floor to the base of the tail.

From point P we draw a perpendicular upward, and from point Z1 a straight line parallel to the back line. Let us denote the point of intersection of straight line Ж1 and straight line НН1 as M2. From point M2 to the left, set aside a distance along the straight line Ж1 equal to the distance Н1Р2 - designate it as M21. From this point, lower down a straight line perpendicular to the floor line, to the floor line.

From the point dividing the NM in half, through the point obtained at the intersection of straight lines Ж1 and Р1, we draw a straight line until it intersects with the straight line drawn from point M21. Designate the intersection point as SK. (See Figure 8) Its location should correspond to the position of your dog's hock joint. Check and adjust if necessary.

We will connect points P1 SK and the intersection point of straight lines Ж1 and Р1 as in Figure 8.

Connect points M1 and the intersection point of lines Zh1 and P1 with a straight line. Next, adjust it by making it round, repeating the natural shape of the animal’s body. For a better fit, you need to add volume in the form of a dart, which can be converted into a gather when sewing. Along the newly drawn line from point M1, set aside 3 cm, then the solution of the dart itself is 3 cm, the depth of the dart corresponds to two solutions of the dart itself + 1-2 cm, i.e. 6-8 cm. Design the dart. see fig. 9

From point P1 down, set aside a distance equal to the tuck opening - 3 cm. This will help compensate for the length of the trouser leg after processing the dart. Decorate the bottom of the trouser leg in accordance with Figure 9.

The pattern of the lower part of the overalls is the abdomen. Draw a Rectangle with a width equal to the measurement Width between the front paws, and a length equal to the length of the segments from the overalls drawing. They are marked with a red line in the drawing. Divide the rectangle into 3 equal parts and increase its width in the places of the dividing lines, because as shown in the figure, the lines of the side parts of the rectangle should be smoothly curved, resembling the shape of a barrel. Remember to take your dog's gender into account when designing the length of the belly piece.

The inner part of the pants of the overalls is cut out separately, repeating the pattern details of the lower part of the drawing of the overalls.

Important! After constructing the base pattern for the overalls, check the drawing by measuring the width and length in sections, using the appropriate measurements and comparing their values with the measurements of the sections of the pattern drawing.

This is the pattern we came up with. This dog overalls pattern is a basic one, i.e. a base pattern. It includes minimum freedom increases. With its help, you can simulate various modifications of overalls for different seasons. These, for example, require almost no changes to the basic pattern.

If you have chosen other models, you just need to take into account the additional freedom of fit you need, based on the properties of the fabric, the number of layers, the thickness of the insulation... You also need to take into account the model features of the clothing, use your imagination!

And one more tip: try sewing a sample using this pattern from inexpensive fabric, where you use a marker to draw the finishing lines and eliminate any inaccuracies in the fit, if any, using pins.
