Materials and tools

The work will require a number of materials and tools, as well as important details, which are worth stocking up on in advance.

Materials

Baby cots are too expensive, and sometimes their cost depends on appearance and purpose depending on gender - for a girl or a boy, so it is better to make it yourself. Before you start making this piece of furniture, you need to develop a project, purchase required material. The main thing is to have an idea of the structure of this element. If you have basic dexterity skills, you can make premium furniture, while spending a small amount of money, which would be enough to purchase a simple crib made of MDF or chipboard. It is advisable to first complete a drawing or project. Drawings and a project will help facilitate the entire process of assembling a product for a child.

Before you begin the project of making a crib, you need to purchase the following materials:

  • edged boards - they must have a wood base coniferous species: spruce or pine;
  • bars that have cross-sectional dimensions of 50x100 mm. These elements will be needed to make the main frames and legs;
  • slats with cross-sectional dimensions of 20x20 mm. These components will be needed to make the filling;
  • You definitely need to buy plywood. Its thickness dimensions should be approximately 5 mm.

What type of bed was not made for a house or car, you need to remember important rule- bars and slats should be chosen from wood of special strength. The quality and further wear of the product depend on them.

Required Tools

The crib has a very simple design; a beginner in this business can assemble it, but it’s still worth preparing necessary set tools, without which the entire work project would be impossible. Be sure to prepare the necessary equipment for making a crib for a girl or boy:

  • you will need a jigsaw with electrically controlled or a saw for cutting boards and beams;
  • grinding machine;
  • you will need a manual router that has many attachments;
  • It is advisable to purchase a file designed for woodworking;
  • drill or screwdriver;
  • tools for measuring work - tape measure and level;
  • you will need clamps with which to glue the workpiece elements;
  • brushes and rollers for finishing works– painting, varnishing and decorating.

Details

In addition to the basic materials, you also need to purchase related elements. Without them, the work of making a crib would simply be impossible. So, what will you need to purchase from related materials:

  • you need to buy screws. Preference should be given to phosphated type products that are intended for woodworking;
  • prepare wood glue;
  • special putty mixture for finishing work on wood;
  • corners made of durable steel, which are needed to fasten all the parts;
  • be sure to buy stain to impregnate the wood and protect it from moisture. Otherwise, the product will not last even a year;
  • You will need varnish for painting furniture or paint for interior finishing work.

Don’t forget about decoration, it is advisable to decorate it, as you can see in the photo. You can make a bed for a house, a dolphin, a car. It can be decorated in the form of these products. If the crib is used as a house, then you need to purchase appropriate decorative elements and textiles. If the product is made to look like a dolphin, then preference should be given to blue decoration elements. If it is intended for a girl, then it can be decorated with various pink ribbons, flowers, and a pink canopy made of multi-colored textiles with patterns can be hung at the edges. If for a boy, then you will need to use the same ribbons, only in blue, light blue, green.

You definitely need to buy a mattress. It’s better not to skimp on it; the child’s continued comfortable stay in bed depends on it. It is advisable to purchase orthopedic products in specialized stores. It has a beneficial effect on the formation of the spine of a growing organism.

Manufacturing instructions

To obtain a high-quality and functional product, we advise you to follow the instructions below in detail.

Frame

The frame of the crib consists of the backrests and the base itself, on which the mattress will later be laid. The width of the frame should be calculated based on the size of the mattress. The frame is made of two crossbars. We make these crossbars from edged boards. The length of the bars is calculated independently, it all depends on the age up to which the crib will be used for a girl or boy. Typically the standard length is 120 cm.

How to make a frame:

  • measure the required length of the crossbars using a tape measure and make notes with a pencil;
  • with the help electric jigsaw we saw off the boards for the crossbars of the required length, there should be only two of them;
  • from the edges of the crossbars you need to attach a 25x50 mm strip to glue and screws;
  • it is 10 cm shorter in length, so we leave dimensions of 5 cm at each end;
  • You need to drill a hole for the screws; it should be drilled close to the edge so that the wood does not burst;
  • using corners we connect the frame with the headboards. Secure with self-tapping screws and glue. We fix it in 4 corners;
  • at the end of the fastening area we cover it with wood putty mixture.

Base

Next, a base is made on which the mattress and other bedding will be laid in the future. It is advisable to use a material of good strength that can withstand heavy loads.

How to make a base:

  • from 20x20 slats you need to cut boards that will serve as filling for the base;
  • they should be cut so much that they completely fill the entire base. You should not save, if there are few of them, in the future they will quickly break;
  • they should be attached to the frame slats. They need to be attached with emphasis;
  • the installation step should be 10 cm, 2 screws should be used for each plank;
  • For installation of each self-tapping screw, a hole should be drilled in advance. When tightening the self-tapping screw, its head should go completely into the wood;
  • the holes should be coated with wood putty mixture;
  • After the putty dries, everything needs to be sanded.

Legs

Instructions for the process of making a crib for a child are not complete without making the legs. The legs of the crib are made according to the following scheme:

  • You need to cut blanks from 50x100 timber. They should be long under the head, and shorter under the foot;
  • you need to complete 4 blanks. 4 for the headboard and 4 for the footboard;
  • Using glue, you need to glue the blanks in pairs. To do this, you need to take one workpiece, attach it to another and make sure that they are inserted evenly;
  • we twist them using self-tapping screws;
  • when fastening workpieces with self-tapping screws, the heads of the screws should be recessed deep into the wood so that they hold tighter;
  • We seal the fastening points with wood putty;
  • when everything is dry, the surface of the wood should be thoroughly sanded.

Holes for dowels

For the headboards you will need boards that have a groove with a width of 25 mm. If you have a router available, these holes can be cut and turned yourself or in a carpentry shop. Holes for dowels must be drilled at the ends of the planks with grooves. During drilling, it is necessary to determine with particular accuracy their distance from the edge - they must be strictly at the same level on all planks.

The holes should have the same depth, which is equal to half the length of this piece of wood. These holes need to be drilled with a drill. And in order not to make a mistake, you need to mark the size of the recess on the drill and stick a piece of paint glue.

Headboard

The headboard should be made according to the instructions:

  • From edged boards you need to cut planks that have the same length dimensions. They are needed to fill the headboard and footboard;
  • the groove for inserting the slats under the headboard must be filled in advance with glue;
  • insert the planks into the grooves and fix them evenly;
  • Holes for dowels should be drilled in the leg. It is better to attach the backrest and mark the insertion points with a pencil;
  • drill holes in the marked places and pour glue into them;
  • we place the backrest in these holes, this must be done tightly so that there are no cracks or distortions;
  • we make the second back.

An important point regarding gluing parts. After gluing, all elements will be movable, so it is important to set everything exactly 90 degrees and leave it until dry. Otherwise, during further assembly, you can simply damage the entire structure.

Assembly

After all the elements of a children's bed for a girl or boy are ready, you need to check for chips and various defects. Features of preparing bed elements for assembly:

  • if there are any chips, they need to be repaired with a putty mixture;
  • when everything is dry, all elements need to be sanded;
  • After sanding, the components must be treated with a primer or stain. This will protect the material from moisture and preserve its properties for a long time;
  • When all the elements are dry, everything needs to be painted. The color of the paint depends on the gender of the child, for a girl it can be used gentle tones– pink, red, white, light green, yellow. And for a boy will do blue, cyan, green, yellow;
  • We paint all the elements with paint, you can use multi-colored paint. Perform this step as you wish;
  • if the bed is made to look like a house, then you need to show your imagination and draw everything necessary elements. If the bed is a house, then you need to mark the windows, roof and others important elements. If it’s a dolphin, then you need to show all your artistic skill and paint it in the form of this animal;
  • After drying, you need to purchase textiles of the desired color and pattern for a bed for a girl or boy.

Attaching the headboard to the bed leg

We are moving the children into the nursery; we first planned to buy a ready-made bed, but we couldn’t choose until we came across an online store with house beds. I was excited about this, but it was expensive to buy (from 50k), and taking into account my own nuances, I decided to do it myself. Everything was bought at Leroy, the price was about 10,000 rubles (+8,000 for the trimmer and sander). Net time days 7.

The project was drawn in visio. I did cutting and sanding in the apartment without repairs, assembled and painted at home. Acrylic paint on water, almost no smell. Assembly on confirmations, then covered with facades using furniture bolts. All holes were puttied and painted. Colored colors for multi-colored planks.
In the end, if you have the time and place, it’s not very difficult. The children are happy, they moved with pleasure:)

We begin to assemble the tool table. Tools: cross-cut saw, eccentric sander, hand router, hand saw, square, 4 small clamps, screwdriver, also known as drill.

Homemade milling table. Fraser lent it. The table is old for renovation, no problem.
In general, all the boards had a factory rounding - a chamfer. But there are no bars, I had to chamfer it this way.

Trimming thing!

The grinding turned out to be the most painful. It’s better not to start without a sander. And do not do it in a residential apartment. Fine dust everywhere.

Wallpaper, you can decorate it.

Frame assembly. Bar 50x50. For confirmations.

Facades on furniture bolts.

Painting with a velor roller white in 3 layers.

The base color is ready. Later I cut out another window by removing 4 boards.

The size of the lower bed is 90x200, another 20 cm near the wall in the form of a shelf for pillows. Thus bottom part extended by 20 cm, when you sit down you don’t hit your head. From the lower base to the upper 110 cm.

The staircase was specially made from the inside so that it would not take up space in the room, which is already small. The size of the upper berth is 90x160. What’s new to me is that I discovered that it’s extremely easy to make a children’s staircase, just a block, a feather and a round profile on PVA.

The screw caps were then puttied and painted separately, so in the end everything was fine.

Final - back wall made of 12mm plywood covered with wallpaper. Ikea shelves have been waiting in the wings for a long time. The backlight is temporary (for a long time), I will finish it. You can sit on the bed like you would on a sofa, just add more pillows.

Now, thanks to new technologies and progress, there are special small inflatable play houses or the crib is made into a small hut.

Having your own corner is very important for a child, even from a psychological point of view. Having his own house, he learns independence and cleanliness. He develops imagination, ingenuity, and a sense of responsibility.

But, unfortunately, not every family can afford to purchase an inflatable or plastic house or a crib for a child. But there is a way out. After all, you can do everything with your own hands. To do this you will need a little imagination, tools, equipment, material and a few hours of free time.

House bed - what is it like?

Make the child happy fairy house Every dad who is at least a little familiar with woodworking tools can do it. And children perceive such “real estate” with great joy.

All children dream of having their own corner where they can drink tea with their dolls, bring guests over and, if necessary, hide from the whole world. Therefore, it must be safe and durable. It should be remembered that the product is made for a child, so you can only use harmless products for gluing and painting parts.

The beams and boards must be well processed so that there is not a single burr. Protruding screws and other metal parts are also prohibited.

The attic can be made into an additional sleeping area. And it will already be bunk bed. The staircase to the second floor must be durable and comfortable, because it is along it that the child will climb and descend several times a day.

It is better to make the structure simple, without unnecessary clutter and not the necessary details so that it can be easily kept clean.

For a child, it is enough to draw the outlines of the house. During the game, walls can be built using fabric rather than wood. It is easier to wash or shake off dust.

It is also worth remembering that the house is a sleeping place for a child, so it should be comfortable and contribute to a healthy night's sleep. It is important to ensure that the baby has room in it. First of all, it is a children's bed, and then only a place for games. So, to summarize, what properties should a house bed have:

Having made a house bed with your own hands, you will be sure of its 100% high quality.

Design

Before you start working, you need to clearly know what you want. It is important to have an idea of what you will do down to the smallest detail. For design, you can use pencil and paper or use a special CAD computer program. Determine the size of the cot-house. It must match the size of the mattress.

It can be made on legs or it will just be a slatted bottom. If you provide legs for the cot-house, it is possible to make better use of the space under it drawers using guides or wheels. It’s also a good idea to build additional sleeping place.

For those who are making a crib for the first time, craftsmen recommend taking solid pine timber with a 50 mm cut. Boards with a cross section of 40 mm are suitable for making handrails for the arena wall, which can be made removable.

Be sure to carefully calculate the size of the roof and pipe. The height of the vertical supports for a crib with legs will be approximately 1300 mm, and products without them will be slightly less - 1100 mm.

The strength of the structure depends on the material

From choice the right material The strength of the crib depends. This should be remembered, because children love to frolic on it. Therefore, it is best to take solid-lamella laminated pine timber. There are no knots on it, it has flat surface and does not require surface treatment. The disadvantage of this material is the high cost of the material.

But you can take cheaper wood, although you need to pay attention to knots, resin pockets and moisture content of the material. Ordinary wooden beam It is sold in any hardware store, but it must be well prepared for work. Also, material consumption is high due to unevenness and other shortcomings.

The process of preparing wood for subsequent work

The beams are cut according to the dimensions in the project. Then using thickness planer All errors in the workpiece are removed. If there are knots, these places are smeared with wood putty; the areas where there were resin pockets are also treated with it, but first they need to be treated with a chisel.

Using a grinder, we go through all the workpieces first with a 120-grit belt, and then a second time with 240-grit. Now all the parts are perfectly smooth and ready for painting.

Try-on assembly

Before assembling the product, you should do a preliminary assembly, which will show the flaws. It is assembled in parts using corner clamps. To do this, it is better to use a 5×70 confirmat and a special countersink with a 5 mm drill. By using corner clamps two parts are installed, we mark the places where the holes should be and drill them, then we wrap the confirmation. We do similar actions with the remaining connections. The holes must be identical and not intersect.

Let's disassemble the crib. Sometimes, after creating holes, you have to treat these places with 240 abrasive.

Painting

We cover the parts with paint. Painting will be of better quality if done using a pneumatic spray gun. But before applying the first layer, you should thoroughly clean the parts from dust. You can use enamel or acrylic paint. Sometimes craftsmen use polyurethane varnish. Apply two layers together with the primer and leave to dry for at least 12 hours.

However, you can build a house from any children's bed by attaching an airy canopy to it.

Kids do not strive for maximum verisimilitude; for them, some visual similarity is more important in the presence of an element of a fairy tale. This is why every child dreams of his own home - he does not perceive his own room as such. At home, you can build a temporary house from chairs and a blanket, but it is not very plausible, and it will not last forever. Subject to availability personal plot you can build a real tree house, this will cause a storm of delight in the child, but not even every dad can do this with his own hands. But a children's bed-house is a solution that allows you to make your baby happy without extra effort.

Features and Benefits

The only thing that can be distinguished from all house-beds in common is that they all have a sleeping place, they all resemble a house - one way or another. Everything else depends solely on the specific model and the imagination of its designer.

Such furniture can be more like a bed, or more like a house. In the first case, a kind of roof imitating a gable roof is placed on an ordinary crib. In the second case, the product is a full-fledged house, which is sometimes even raised to a sufficient height to make useful use of the space underneath it. This house contains a crib. There are more complex designs, designed for two children and equipped additional accessories(like simple horizontal bars, Swedish walls and so on).

It should be noted that a children's house bed is considered more popular among girls, since boys more often prefer a car bed.

This does not stop manufacturers - they produce models with designs for both young ladies and future men.

Types and styles

Although a bed-house seems to be an invention that does not allow design ideas to run wild, today hundreds of variations of furniture of this type have been created, each of which is significantly different from its analogues. In order to “push” parents away from an overly standard approach to the issue, it is worth studying in more detail what such beds are.

So, a house can be more of a decoration for a bed, just as a bed can only be an addition to a house. Another thing is that even the decoration of a house can look completely different: from a formal frame imitating gable roof, up to unusual looking panels that cover a bunk bed that looks like a tropical bungalow. Often large structures are made with a playhouse - it is inseparable from the bed, but also provides a purely play area inside itself. A large house for two, made on two “floors”, can also be equipped with a slide for going down from top to bottom.

You should not think that the bed is strictly inside the house, and that there is a roof on top. There are beds with a house underneath. The sleeping area is located, as it were, on top of the house, while inside it is exclusively a play space. It's like a bed in an attic. If the bed is still located below, then there is usually nothing upstairs, and climbing on the roof is strictly prohibited.

Design options

An additional advantage children's bed-houses is also the fact that they wide range makes it easy to find something interesting design solution for any interior and any style.

The simplest option is a frame assembled from individual support beams. Some manufacturers do not even cover such a frame with a roof - it is assumed that the material for it will be fabric, which you can either purchase from the manufacturer itself or cut it yourself, at your own discretion. However, more often the roof is still made of the same material as the entire bed as a whole.

As for the walls, the variety of options is even wider. The simplest of them is fabric stretched over a frame, or no walls at all, just supports. In models for small children, walls are often not provided, since children are uncomfortable in a small confined space, but there are special railings that can be removed as the child grows older.

Good option- these are “real” walls of varying degrees of strength. Such a solution can look like anything, but more often it is still given an external resemblance to a real house, although houses can have a wide variety of designs.

Material

When choosing a children's bed-house, even more attention should be paid to the material than when choosing an ordinary children's crib. The useful life of such furniture usually does not exceed several years, so this attitude is not caused by the desire to extend the service life of the product, but by safety requirements.

Even if we are talking about a small formal extension over an ordinary bed, there is always a risk that the baby will break the supports made of fragile material with his pampering. So the structure (even if not too heavy) will fall directly on him. If we talk about those houses that provide for the location of a bed (especially - play area) at the second level, then the requirements for the quality of materials are prohibitively high, because children will probably jump and play pranks there, and it’s also good if they are alone.

Such high requirements narrow the range of materials acceptable for use to virtually one - usually furniture of this type is made from solid wood. MDF is less common - this material is also acceptable, it is cheaper and almost as durable, but still the load on it should be reduced. The design made of boards has a right to exist, but it is advisable to trust them only for decoration. Finishing the topic of materials of wooden origin, it can be noted that chipboard is not suitable at all - it is toxic.

As for not wood materials, then they also did not become widespread. In terms of strength, some kind of metal would be perfect, but it is cold and there is no proper feeling of comfort. The total weight is metal structure very significant. Plastic is appropriate in some places, especially as decorative elements, but before purchasing you should definitely ask the seller to show certificates. Some inexpensive types of this material are also toxic.

Popular brands

To set general direction, it is worth getting acquainted with the most popular manufacturers of cabin beds on the domestic market, and also find out what the general tone of reviews about their products is.

IN better side the products of the famous Swedish company Ikea. Outwardly, of course, everything looks quite modest - this is exactly the case when the manufacturer did not take care of the presence of stationary walls and a roof. There is only a frame that can be covered with an awning produced by the same company.

The peculiarity of the house is the presence of two floors at once, one of which is reserved for sleeping space, and the other is intended for games. The creators deliberately did not make any hints about which floor was created for what - this point was left at the discretion of the consumer.

The company emphasizes its desire to develop and make products better every year - as an achievement, it is presented that its furniture is no longer used plastic parts. In this case, the crib is made from chipboard - even if it is of high quality, the question of whether it is worth taking remains open.

But the only Russian supplier who collected a sufficient number of reviews on the Internet received mostly criticism. Judging by the volume of comments, the choice is in favor of the brand’s products "Legend" Many did, the reason for which was the very attractive appearance of the product. At the same time, commentators themselves note that furniture made from chipboard has no place in a nursery. In addition, the visually beautiful crib is quite different unpleasant smell glue. This is unpleasant even for an adult, and even more so for a child.

How to choose?

When planning to purchase this or that model, pay attention to whether it meets the basic criteria for choosing a children's bed-house. Here are the main points to pay attention to:

  • Safety. The health of the child is above all! Always research the quality of the materials from which the product is made. We are talking about the strength of the base material, the reliability of the fasteners, and also ensuring that no part of the crib releases toxic substances.

Another important point: the house must be carefully sanded, it should not have sharp corners. If the purchase is made for a very young child, the crib must also be protected with railings.

  • Convenience. Absolutely everything in a house should be comfortable, starting with its size. The house should not be too cramped, otherwise bumps cannot be avoided. Not required, but important factor– this is an opportunity to invite friends to “visit”, because playing with a group is much better, and perfect house must be able to accommodate everyone.

Certain advantages can be seen in the removable walls and ceiling - they are very convenient to remove for washing. In addition, when putting things in order inside the house, it is quite practical to remove them - this reduces the risk of injury due to active movements in a narrow space.
