Methods of painting furniture, advice from masters and important nuances. Decorating a chest of drawers with your own hands Updating an old chest of drawers

Decorator and painting artist Inga Azhgirey talks in detail about all the stages of decorating a chest of drawers. If you wish, you can repeat all the steps yourself and end up with a bright, individual item that will decorate your home. Inga loves unusual objects in the interior, conducts master classes in painting and decorative painting for children and adults.

To paint a chest of drawers in Indian style we will need:

» soil for wood. In this case, it was necessary to preserve the texture of the wood, so I used regular glue PVA, which can be found in a construction or office supply store;

» ordinary thin paper 80 g for transferring pictures. You can take thick tracing paper;

» several simple pencils of different softness, a pen, an eraser, scissors;

» grinder with fine-grained skin or just fine-grained skin on a block. Available in every hardware store;

» acrylic paints, 1-2 volumetric contours (can be used on glass or universal);

» brushes, squirrel (imitation squirrel) and synthetics or columns. Numbers 0, 00, 000, 1, 2, 3 (depending on the complexity of the selected pattern);

» acrylic varnish on water based. Sold in construction or art stores. Depends on the size of the job. Matte or glossy. The varnish is odorless, the brush is easy to wash warm water with soap;

» synthetic brush-brush from a hardware store for varnishing;

» palette, a couple of rags, an apron.

What will be drawn?

To begin with, it is important to decide on the theme, what exactly you want to depict on the chest of drawers, and how much wooden background you plan to leave.

I wanted to leave as much wood as possible and focus on beautiful handles, colors and image sizes.

The Indian elephant, which is depicted on the bedspread of the owner of the chest of drawers, was taken as the starting point.

This was followed by a selection of images of Indian elephants, peacocks, Indian paisley cucumbers, and mandala symbols on Pinterest. Just save the images in a separate folder. The pictures can be color or black and white - the main thing is that they correspond to your idea.

Preparation

The most important thing is to prime and sand the dresser. Wood readily absorbs paint; straight lines may spread a little along the fibers. Mix PVA glue with water in the proportion of 90% glue + 10% water (sometimes 20%, depending on the initial thickness of the glue).

We unscrew the handles of the chest of drawers and we will prime them too. Using a wide brush, cover everything with primer, let it dry, then sand it. In this way, we close the pores of the wood, preventing the paint from absorbing too much, and the lines will not turn out to be “spread”.

Sketches

Then you should make a very rough sketch on paper in order to understand which drawings, where and in what size to transfer to the chest of drawers. You can freely draw the image to the desired scale or immediately print all the required sizes of the selected drawings.

After drawing one copy, which was outlined with a pen, turn the image over to the other side and make a mirror transfer of the picture through the window glass. Thus, to obtain a mirror image you will not need to spend extra time and effort.

Paint the reverse side of the picture tightly with a soft with a simple pencil so that when pressed with a pen, the contours of the design will be imprinted on the wood.

Color selection

After transferring all the images, it's time to choose paint.

I wanted to bring more cold ones into the chest of drawers blue shades, because there are plenty of warm reds and oranges in the interior.

Dark blue became the main color of the painting. He made outlines of birds, elephants, paisley, mandala.

Additional - 6 colors in which the handles are painted.

As a volumetric decor - a bronze contour.

The most enjoyable stage: painting sketches

You should start with large forms - a blue frame and painting the ends.

Then start painting the front of the dresser. Apply the dark blue outlines first, then multi-colored paints make accents, and after drying – contour decor.

When working with the contour, you need to take into account that after application it takes about an hour to dry so that it cannot be smeared.

After painting the entire chest of drawers, you can start working on the handles. They are painted in the colors of the chest of drawers and decorated with dark blue tones and a decorative outline. They can be screwed to the chest of drawers in any combination.

The final stage: varnishing

After painting, we coat the chest of drawers with varnish.

Handles, drawers, body are covered separately.

We take everything out, place it on a stable surface (this especially applies to handles), take our wide brush and cover thin layer varnish It is important that you do not get drips of varnish - they are difficult to remove later.

Each coat of varnish takes 12 hours to dry (more information can be found on the varnish can). Acrylic varnish does not stick after a couple of hours, but it is still better to apply it in the evening and leave it in a room without drafts, sticking fluff and pets until the morning.

The next evening the procedure can be repeated.

Get inspired by new ideas, make things beautiful and surprise your friends and family with interesting gifts that you put your own effort into. Approaching New Year, and soon we will delight you with various lessons on the theme of the upcoming holiday.

A good way to decorate, update or give elements of the furnishings a certain style is to paint furniture. From any, even the oldest interior items, you can create a unique work of art. Everything is limited only by imagination and patience.

Of course, there are no restrictions on the choice of subjects. The main factor determining suitability is the material. To implement the plan, old furniture made of wood is better suited. This is precisely where its value lies relative to modern products made from chipboard and fiberboard. “Sawdust furniture” is definitely not suitable.

WITH wooden surface easier to work with. old paint or the varnish can be easily removed, various defects (chips, cracks) can be eliminated or left to give an “aging” effect. In addition, most methods of applying patterns are designed specifically for wood. Any pattern or ornament looks good under varnish on wood texture. Furniture covered with natural veneer is suitable. An example of this is old wardrobe or a chest of drawers made of multi-layer veneered plywood. After removing the old varnish or paint, the surface is primed, painted in the required color and a design is applied.

But also furniture from modern materials should not be crossed off the list. MDF facades coated with acrylic can be painted in any style after certain preparation. Acrylic coating is a layer of paint that is polished after drying. This type of coating is often used in the manufacture of kitchen facades.

Modern paints and varnishes allow them to be applied over various coatings. There are also paints designed for painting glass without special preparation.

Popular painting options

The most common option is simple decorative painting of furniture. Basically this is the application of small elements, ornaments or repeating patterns. For a simple drawing, paint of one color is used, and to simplify the process, templates or stencils are used for painting. This type of decoration is suitable for modern furniture. Gilding is widespread. This type of painting is typical for interiors in classic styles. Curly elements of furniture decoration are decorated with gold.

A more complex option is artistic painting. This is quite a painstaking work; all stages of the bark are performed manually, including the smallest details. Painting on furniture can be in the form of a pattern or a small fragment, or it can also be a complex three-dimensional design. Author's works are especially valued.

A special place is occupied by the production of antique interior items. This also includes the restoration of old furniture. Various painting techniques and styles are used in the work. Surfaces and finishing elements are subjected to “aging” in various ways. Antique items are very popular among wealthy people and collectors. Usually this type decorations are made to order.

Required tools and materials

Coating paint

The final result directly depends on the choice of paint. The basis for the coating is a primer. It must be designed for woodworking. Acrylic-based primer material does a good job.

Any latex or acrylic paint will be suitable for the top layer. It is better to make the surface matte. Gloss doesn't always look good. A good option would be spray paint. This will allow you to apply it in an even layer.

Acrylic paints are often used for painting furniture. They are good for drawing various patterns. You can also use oil mixtures. Their traditional purpose is painting.

Varnish

He plays a role protective coating. It is possible to use alkyd or acrylic varnish for furniture. Just like paint, it can be matte or glossy. Applying a layer of varnish over the design is the final stage of the work.

Brushes and roller for painting

A roller may be needed to apply the primer and coat of paint over a large area. A wide brush will help with curly elements.

Paint brushes, pencil, paper and ruler

It is convenient to draw small patterns and lines using thin art brushes. For acrylic paint, it is better to use brushes with synthetic bristles. It won't stick together. Oil paint Requires a brush with natural bristles.

A simple pencil, paper and ruler are useful for creating sketches and marking the surface for the drawing. In addition, you may need to make templates or stencils for painting.

Surface preparation tool

You can remove old varnish or paint from furniture by sanding it with sandpaper. You will need sandpaper of different grain sizes for more thorough surface treatment. In some places, the old coating will have to be removed with a spatula.

You can remove some types of varnish or paint from old furniture using special chemicals. You can find them at any hardware store.

To remove dust, you should stock up on rags. A brush with long, stiff bristles will help sweep dirt out of crevices and other hard-to-reach places.

How to create a design and implement an idea correctly

Painting furniture with your own hands is a long and painstaking job. The process may take a long time. Sometimes it takes more than one day or even a week. It is especially difficult if you have no experience in such a matter, it doesn’t matter, we describe old furniture or give new look modern items.

For beginners, a few tips will be useful:

  • Any work begins with a sketch or outline. You can develop the design yourself or borrow the idea of painting furniture from a photo on the Internet. In any case, it will be easier to transfer the drawing from paper than to invent everything on the fly;
  • If you have no experience, you should not immediately take on a large amount of work. To begin, paint a small object;
  • If it is possible to disassemble the furniture, do it. Individual parts are much easier to work with;
  • Free space. There should be enough space to work. Furniture may need to be rotated, tilted or moved;
  • Do not neglect the quality of surface preparation. Grinding defects can ruin the appearance of even a very talented painting. Dust and small particles lead to the same result;
  • Primer is a must for painting or painting. It is easier to work on a surface covered with soil;
  • Each layer of primer, paint or painting requires careful drying. Minimum - a day for each layer.

The process of implementing an idea itself consists of several stages. The first of them is preparation for priming and painting. Classic version with old wooden furniture involves removing the paintwork. For this you will need sandpaper coarse and medium grain or special chemical agent– wash and spatula.

  1. After cleaning the varnish and paint, the surface must be sanded with fine sandpaper. This will get rid of excessive roughness and minor scratches. If there are large chips and cracks on the furniture, they are puttied and sanded;
  2. The next stage is applying primer. This is done using a brush or roller. The formation of drops and streaks should be avoided. As a last resort, you can get rid of them using a sponge, or wait until the layer dries and sand it with sandpaper;
  3. Next comes painting. The paint is applied in two or three thin layers. The result should be a smooth and even surface. After drying, you can begin the most interesting, but no less labor-intensive stage - drawing;
  4. Painted furniture does not necessarily mean an antique wardrobe or chest of drawers, covered with patterns on all sides. More often it is a small design or a repeating pattern. To apply identical patterns, use a stencil or template. These can be simple stencils of butterflies, small patterns, or large templates with complex patterns.

There is more than one way to apply a pattern to furniture. Hand painting is especially appreciated. Painting can be considered the pinnacle of mastery. Combining various ways and painting techniques, it is possible to create truly unique things:

  1. Those who do not own a brush can use the decoupage technique. This method is usually used on small items furniture, but large surfaces can also be decorated;
  2. The final stage of work is covering the painting with transparent varnish. It is advisable to apply several layers. This will protect the design from accidental damage and make it possible to wipe or wash the furniture.

The art of painting makes any item unique. You can paint furniture using any traditional or modern direction. Furniture painting in the Russian style is very popular: Khokhloma, Zhostovo, Mezen. Each of them is unique in its own way. And of course, nothing prevents you from creating your own, no less unique style.

Updating furniture is a common practice that does not require significant investments and allows you to implement creative ideas. This also applies to chests of drawers - almost the most functional furniture. The decor of the chest of drawers should be combined with the interior of the living room in which it is located. If you need to put an accent in a restrained pastel design, an updated print and a vase-topped chest of drawers will become good decision. It's another matter if you need to create perfect combination color palette. A properly decorated old chest of drawers will cope with any task.

Buying new furniture is not a cheap pleasure. And the models sold in the post-Soviet space are not always original. Therefore, a master class on upgrading an old chest of drawers will be useful for those who want to save money, as well as for people with an artistic mindset who gravitate towards everything original. So, how to decorate a chest of drawers with your own hands?

Updating an old chest of drawers

Whether it’s restoring a chest of drawers or decorating a bedside table with your own hands, everything is done in stages. The first thing you need before starting work is tools. Here is a list of what is needed:

  • small grinder;
  • sandpaper or sanding sponge;
  • stencils;
  • spatula;
  • unnecessary toothbrush;
  • screwdriver;
  • wood knife;
  • several brushes, different in width and bristle composition (hard and soft), sponges;
  • masking tape;
  • acetone;
  • industrial film;
  • toothpicks.

Materials needed:

  • volumetric paste or putty based on acrylic;
  • glue for wooden surfaces;
  • wood varnish, stain or primer with paint a certain color(for decoupage - three-layer napkins).

You will also need gloves and a respirator.

If this is an artistic design, acrylic paint of the desired color will do. For those who want to modernize an old chest of drawers good option will be a replacement of furniture fittings: you can add new handles or mirror panels.

Restoration

But for those who are not afraid of working with sandpaper, a spatula and acrylic paint, a step-by-step restoration of the chest of drawers has been prepared. The process consists of several steps: removing the old coating of paint or varnish, thorough sanding, checking for chips and other irregularities, local filling of defects, painting and final decoration of the chest of drawers.

But first you should look for defects in the inside of the chest of drawers. All broken bottoms, shelves and guides should be unscrewed with a screwdriver and measured. In accordance with the geometric parameters, you can buy new elements or make them yourself. If the second option is closer to you, be prepared to acquire an additional arsenal of tools and knowledge in the field of thorough furniture repair. Don't forget to do this check before decorating the chest of drawers with your own hands.

Also pay attention to the screws, handles and legs. If the fittings are not the same, with differences in shape and pattern, then most likely these elements were made by hand, and if some of them are damaged, an analogue part can no longer be obtained. In this case, it is better to replace all the fittings.

Cleaning and preparing the product

Cleaning the surface is done carefully so as not to damage important decorative elements products. First clean the surface by wiping it soap solution. Use a toothbrush to remove dirt and dust from hard-to-reach places.

To free the surface of furniture from paint or varnish, you will need industrial film and acetone. Cover the old chest of drawers with the latter, and to enhance the effect, cover the product with industrial film. In the absence of film, you can use oilcloth, cellophane and other available materials. Limit the air flow and leave the furniture like that for one hour. After this time, the layer of varnish and paint will come off the wood.

Decorating a chest of drawers with your own hands begins with working with a construction spatula. Remove the loose layer from the wood without damaging the surface. Remember to remove all paint.

This is followed by the sanding stage.

The surface free from small decorative elements is sanded with a machine. For the latter, it is important to choose the right nozzle. Using sandpaper or a sanding sponge, sand the area of protruding parts and small parts. Don't overdo the sanding to avoid damaging the chest of drawers.

Cracks, chips, scratches and other defects are carefully covered with wood putty. It is better to give preference to water-based putty. For restoration, putty is selected according to the color, not the name of the wood. It should only go into the recesses, so sand the surface again. If traces remain in the structure of the wood, when tinted with stain, stains will appear that cannot be removed. Replace drawer bottoms, runners and strengthen the frame.

Painting

The choice of paint, its brand and color depends on how you see the future decor of the old chest of drawers. This can be a layer of stain if the wood grain is sanded smooth and looks good without paint. Stain is suitable for changing color while maintaining the texture of wood. You can cover the entire surface with acrylic paint, and then the design of the old chest of drawers will become completely different.

Both stain and paint are applied evenly using brushes or a roller. The work time is the same: only the results upon drying are different.

Stages of work:

  • Selecting varnish, paint of the desired color and other materials.
  • Tinting, staining or painting with a brush or roller. You can use a rag.
  • A layer of varnish over the entire surface of the furniture. After drying, add another layer or two. Can be replaced with transparent primer.
  • Sanding to remove raised pile of wood.
  • Finishing layers of varnish.
  • Wait until completely dry.

If this is a living room, it is better to use presentable panels of restrained color, but for a bedroom or children's room you are given complete freedom of choice.   • brushes and screwdrivers;
  • craquelure varnish;
  • wax candle;

Remove the hardware, drawers and tops of the dresser. Sand the entire surface and wipe with a wet sponge. Apply the first coat of paint and leave to dry. The following abrasions will be intentional, and they are done with sandpaper and a candle. Then apply paint of a different shade (to your taste) and wipe with a sponge those areas that were covered with wax: in these places the paint will rub off. Finish stage- This is a decoupage technique or original painting. Next, everything is covered with craquelure.
